I'm not gonna lie...I still listen to CDs almost exclusively.

I owned several of the first Ipods that came out, but I came to realize that I just prefer the CD experience for a variety of reasons. Plus I honestly felt as though listening to music for eight hours a day with headphones on was doing damage to my ears.

But I've never been a guy that listens to movie scores.

Soundtracks sometimes...but never scores.

Music can be easily ripped in identical quality, and it being a digital file offers immense benefits about where you can play it, how you can movie it, etc. It's also DRM free. With movies I have nowhere near the space required to rip 1,000 movies without compressing them into oblivion, I have no desire to watch them at the gym or on the bus and all download/streaming services use DRM, either inherently or not.

If I could have BD quality "digitally" with no DRM I would totally switch, but I don't expect that to ever happen.

The JP 2 disc set has the best PQ. The film iss spread out over the 2 discs instead of being crammed onto 1 disc like the U.S. set. The only downside is that the JP set has no extras.

my LOA doesnt really pop on the screen
I mean. Its good.. dont get me wrong, but its not explosive!
the desert sky isnt deep blue! its a faded blue.
is this normal? or is it suppose to be a saturated deep BLUE??
his white robe for example, should it pop intense white ? and the sky behind his trying on the robe scene should it be deep blue?
from what I have read the colors are amazing, but im not seeing it.. I have other blu rays which produce a saturated color effect.
do you think its my tv? ITs a 10 year old SAMSUNG PAVV PDP
I know the PDP doesnt pop like the LED or LCD or UHD screens, but I like the PDP for their natural colors and deep blacks.
anyway just wondering if I am expecting too much from this 4k scan Japanese BR,
its not blowing me away compared to my cleopatria, Benhur, or some of my other epics

I watched this for the first time. Great movie and amazing quality on Blu-Ray. I had to watch it in two parts because it's so long. Good that it has intermission.

I would have to say it may be your expectations, because this was worked on for years and is arguably the best the format has to offer: 70mm production shot by one of the best in the business and restored and subsequently cared for and then messaged digitally with great care by the Sony team. It looks as it should. I've seen 70mm prints projected of the '89 restoration 3 different times, and the Blu-ray may even beat that for detail on most HD sets.

You're probably needing to re-calibrate your monitor. It's not like a 3-strip Technicolor musical, it should look fairly vivid depending on the scene or shot. The big sunrise shot should look amazing on a monitor.

I took out my set to check out the film and I notice this stain along the spine. Has anyone come across something similar? It's not like I keep the set next to a window with the sun shining through so I don't know what's going on?

IMG_1708.jpg

If some of you could take out your set and have a look at the books spine it would be appreciated.

..... and no, it's not dust. It looks like an issue with the glue used.

I had another look between Cleopatra and Lawrence of Arabia to generally compare how they look. I don't have Ben-Hur so I can't say anything in regard to that transfer.

Sure, the Cleopatra colours "pop" out more, and the image looks a bit "crisper", but the above posters already mentioned the relevant issues as to why that is so I won't repeat it again.

Are we talking the "mastered in 4K" version? Because the colors don't just "pop", they get right in your face, grab you by the nut sac and scream "WHERE IS YOUR GOD NOW? BWAHAHAHAAA!!!"

Mine is the same. I think it's the glue. It has seeped through.

OK,thanks. I guess I was expecting more Darker blues like the natural sky here where I live, of course I have never been to the desert so perhaps thats how the sky looks there! but yes, I am sure the Blu Ray will look better in actual 4k!
running from a 4k blu ray player showing on a new OLED 4k tv..
if anyone is viewing it like this now, I would love to hear it.
I was watching the CES 2017 and there are some nice TVs coming out!

Just because one movie looks one way doesn't mean every movie should look the same. LOA is about as good of a disc and restoration as you will find. It looks correct and as it should.

This movie is amazing. Is the original theatrical version available on Blu-Ray or DVD?

Mine's looked like that for a long, long time now. Worse, actually; not just the general book spine but it's seeped onto the outer packaging.

Mine too. But mine is not so pronounced as the one in the picture. It doesn't seem to have spread to the box itself. Hopefully that's it. Thanks for the heads-up on this.
