You most likely have some room induced humps in your sub freq range (and maybe a null or two). Have you run a sweep with REW, SMS-1, etc.......? I would not use a movie to tweak your sound to. Assuming you have not already done so, get yourself a SPL meter and a test tone disc (such as AVIA or DVE) and do at least a BASIC calibration. If you have Audyssey, you may want to setup your system with that (I dont use Audyssey on my 885, but a lot of people love it). If you have a laptop, DL Room EQ Wizard and run a sweep which will tell you where your peaks and valleys are at, and then you can iron them out if you feel the need through EQ, different placement, etc..........The first step however is finding optimal placement (which I assume you have done?) and then calibrating the sub with your mains. I could not live without a flat response now as far as my low end is concerned after hearing the difference, especially with music. ![]() Last edited by Todd Smith; 03-31-2010 at 11:33 PM. |

Thanks for your help Todd. I have a thread going on about sub here: https://forum.blu-ray.com/home-theat...subwoofer.html
My next test is placement in my strange shaped room and also.. I've never heard a really well "calibrated" sub so it's hard to know exactly what I am looking for... if that makes sense. How much is a BASIC SPL meter and where is the best place to buy them? I am looking forward to trying out the cave troll scene from FOTR. That sounded AMAZING on the EE DVDs in my friends 7.1 theatre. Awesome... |

For LFE heavy Movies, I actualy prefer some low end gain if you happen to have a uniform room gain say from ~35hz on down to the limit of your sub. This is just me though and many people prefer a totally flat response (when you get to this point, experiment both ways if you happen to have a nice uniform low end hump and see which way you like best........a lot of people, myself included, do like a house curve, or emphasized VERY low end.......I do prefer staying flat up to about 40hz though before letting my hump take over, and again this is just for LFE heavy type movies such as LOTR, Transformers, Terminator Salvation, etc.............), and I am fortunate in that I have a nice pretty uniform hump from about 40hz on down to ~12 or 13hz to work with as far as creating a house type curve. Switching between this and a nice flat response is easy with something such as the SMS-1 (which is what I use, but there are other options as well) since it has presets that you can save different curves to. You can get a SPL meter at Radio Shack. It is a crucial component to a good HT and well worth the money ![]() Sorry for getting off topic.......... As far as demo scenes in LOTR as far as audio, man there are so many. The entire Mines of Moria section in FOTR is one of my favorites ![]() Last edited by Todd Smith; 04-01-2010 at 12:27 AM. |

Todd.. I appreciate your detail. To be honest, most of what you said went over my head
![]() ![]() I need to start with the basics and I did follow some suggestions on my other thread and music Blu-Rays sound great but I haven't messed with sub placement. I turned on Transformers 2 and it sounded "big" but very boomy and every bit of bass sounded the "same" -- Make sense? Yes, about FOTR, I ALWAYS thought the Cave troll scene was SOOO ahead of its time in both CG and audio. Can't wait! EDIT -- Is there any way to get any DTS-HD or Dolby TrueHD demo blu-Rays on this site or anywhere online? I hate testing one Blu-Ray and then having to put in another for testing. Would be nice to test several movie demo scenes quickly.. |

It will make a HUGE difference once you get new speakers. I spent way more than I should have and got a full 7.1 Jamo set and, wow, it took my movies to a whole new level! |

I have a large Pioneer center and DCM Subwoofer... so those are great but my left/right and surrounds are small Sonys... Either way, I am trying to work with what I have and right now, it sounds "good" but my new DCM sub is POWERFUL for a small room but I am trying to find a happy medium on crossover/level/placement etc. David Foster: Hit man Blu-Ray sounds AWESOME (Music). So does Ratatouille Blu. But Transformers and Iron Man sound really "boomy".
EDIT: Don't want to hijack thread.. but any recommendations for CHEAP but good sounds SMALL speakers? Back to LOTR, I haven't heard one negative thing said about the audio on the LOTR Blus.. but also, not very many details. Just quick summaries... |

So, is Amazon going to undercut them? It's rare they get their prices beat by Best Buy. |

... that amounts to a deliberate misquoting of me. Good job. Great social skills there, I'm sure you make lot's of friends with that kind of nonsense. I've said several times in this thread that I have no intention of buying this set, that I will wait for the inevitable and already-promised Extended and Remastered Edition. Quote:
