I didn't crunch the numbers, but I'm guessing it would weigh around 200 pounds with pure concrete. One cubic foot of cement weighs 94 lbs; so if I displaced the cement with some foam, I could get away with around 120 pounds of mix or even less with a high strength concrete. It would still be solid and light enough to carry upstairs when I convert a guest room into a HT room later this year.

I have a quick question. I went the open bottom design and now need to fill with fiberglass, should I use dense or looser fluffy type insulation, I have both?

I have the 2 of mine filled with solid dense foam MAL01.

If you look at the first post in this thread, Big Daddy has pics of what he used & suggestions of what you can use

There seem to be several ways to do this. I've seen use foam, dense fiber and loose fiber. I have built 18"x20"x24" boxes that are cut out on the sides and front and back, like Kareface's. He filled his with pink house type insulation so I should probably just do that.
This method makes it more like a sub trap than just a simple riser.

80 pounds of mix, and it's looking pretty good. Not sure if I want to keep going since it would take another 40 pounds to reach the top. I'm feeling too lazy to make a trip to Home Depot, so I might just pack the rest with foam.

It looks very good and steady. The concrete is more than enough. Just fill it with foam, close it, and start enjoying some movies and music.

Thanks for the input again, BD. I'm going to give it at least 24 hours to set before filling with foam, closing the box and topping off with a door mat. The project was very easy despite my carpentry skill being weak. I can't wait to hear how my subwoofer sounds!

Project done. WOW 100% audible difference! I can now crank up my sub much louder without getting any negative sounds or vibrations within the room. Well worth the hour spent building and $40 of materials. I can't believe how great this cheap Acoustic Audio sub sounds on top a solid riser. This thread rocks.

Yes, it will do.

If you are patient and do a complete search, you will find plenty of products that basically are made for the same purpose.

I'm almost done building my riser. Everything else in my room is done. I just have one question. With the high density foam, do I just put it under the riser or am I supposed to attach it to the bottom of the riser somehow? Please let me know. Thanks!

Unless it Completely takes up the ENTIRE Space beneath your riser, I'd Attach it (velcro, glue, carpet nails, etc.).
