Hopefully it's the former. Casting someone just because they're a name probably isn't the best course.

I'm afraid its this, no question, sorry folks.

I'm feeling sorta the same about Smith. His placement seems rather odd in this lineup, particularly given how he's always been in lead roles. If I had my pick, I would have gone with someone else, but I'll wait till the marketing starts rolling in to judge.
I don't see the problem...I think her look is fine. Plus, as pointed out, she has acting chops...she was excellent and funny in The Wolf of Wall Street. I can't wait to see how they design Quinn's look for a film.

I'm a little worried about Leto and Smith most of all. Nothing against them, but Leto has nearly impossible shoes to fill, and I can't picture Smith as a convincing villain.

Manu Bennett was perfect as Deathstroke on Arrow. Put everyone else to shame as far is acting is concerned on that show.

I'm not much of a fan of Jared Leto....so I'm a wait and see approach on him. If they were going to cough up money on this flick, give Leo the money to give a crack at the Joker. Yeah, I'm not a big fan of Leonardo DiCaprio but I think he'd nail the s.o.b in a different but convincing way.....

As for Will Smith.... I was under the impression he was in line for being the actual enemy, dare I say, Villain of the flick, not the lead of the Suicide Squad as Deadshot. Deadshot's a cool character, but which Will Smith will show up? The one who phone's it in for a paycheck or the one who has brings his talent and kills it....It feels like Wild, Wild West all over again....but I'll give this a shot.

As for Harley Quinn, my personal favorite female Rogue of the DC Universe..... I'll reserve comment till I see footage....Everything else, looks solid..... I figure we'll atleast get a decent movie, but it will depend on how this all gels together...

Bad movie choices recently aside, I think he's still a household name based off his Fresh Prince character alone, so intentional casting or not, Smith brings more eyes to the project and butts to the seats than an actor who's fairly "popular" on a TV series or something.

Hopefully, this can be a career resurrection for Big Willie.

Everyone worried about Will Smith phoning it in: He can't afford that at this point. His ego has gotten the better of him over the last few years. He skipped on things like Django Unchained and the Independence Day sequels because he thought he was bigger than them. But after things like After Earth and Men in Black 3, where he gained a very unsavory reputation during the production, he tanked his career. Now he has to earn the trust of not just audiences again, but studios and executives as well. So, to put it frankly, he can't and won't phone it in. His career can't handle that, and he knows it. This is the kind of role that could not only rejuvenate his career, but as long as he absolutely owns the psychotic nature of the character, it's a role that will let audiences see him in a new light. This could make or break his career, so he has to bring his best. Period.

I wouldn't say he put everyone to shame, as there were some good performances from Amell in S2, as well as the Moira character, and even Summer Glau, but yes, Bennett as Deathstroke certainly stood out the most. I was intrigued every time was on-screen as the villain.

Brave words but I just don't see it, I don't think he can be a villain, it won't come across...because he's Will Smith. He can't get away from that just the same if it was Tom Cruise, It would just be Tom Cruise trying to be a villain. Some stars are just too big for roles like this, stars that are all glitz and glamour and not actual proper actors like the British crowd. I'd rather have Ralph Fiennes in the role instead.

This movie will likely be marketed and centered around the Joker and Harley Quinn. They better not neuter both of them. Hopefully they go the new 52 route and make The Joker sick and twisted and Harley Quinn batshit crazy. Fingers crossed for absolute craziness from the two of them. I want this...

Are people forgetting that Will Smith is a good actor? After passing on so many big movies (Matrix), this one is gonna be his chance to play bad-ass.

I really can't see how they won't centre the movie around Smith myself. He's the big star here.

I wonder who they will cast as Amanda Waller and which members of the Justice League we will see.

Off the top of my head, I'm thinking for Amanda Waller:

Kerry Washington
Viola Davis
Rosario Dawson

For the record I like Will Smith quite a bit, even after his recent run of insanity and bad film roles but I think he's a horrible choice for this. Hopefully they can find some way for him to be the character and not let being "Will Smith" overpower the role.

Yes, but I don't see it. Like others have said, Smith isn't the draw he was circa 2007/08. The biggest character draws are obviously Joker and Harley Quinn...that's the movie the audience will want to see.

I also want to see tie-ins to the Justice League and Amanda Waller. Could be almost as big as the Justice League films themselves in establishing WB/DC's presence in Hollywood as a viable film universe to be reckoned with.
