Arrow DC's The Flash

I was able to ask producer Charles Roven about the current status of the big screen adaptation of The Flash while I was at the press junket for The Dark Knight.

“We had hoped to be able to get a new draft going before the writers’ strike and we weren’t able to,” Roven admitted. “And since the writers’ strike, we just haven’t been able to find the right creative compatibility between what we’re looking for and a writer and you know, we’re a little bit dragging our feet, we’re just waiting to see what’s going to happen with this actor’s strike, you know.”

It has since been reported that DC is taking Warner Bros to task for the current state of their upcoming film properties, so it wouldn’t surprise me if the project is all of a sudden given the fast track.

The Flash was my favorite character as a kid! I am hoping they can get this movie going because it has been on and off for several years now!

Thanks for the news Jason!

Who could play the Flash?

I had one name but I don't know... if you've seen him in his more serious work (Majestic, Eternal Sunshine), he is very good, and with the right combination I think he would be good. (Not the "Ace Ventura" Jim)

Jim Carrey

Any other ideas?

I would say it would depend on which version of the Flash alter ego they decide to go with!

I wish they would start doing something with all these DC characters. I really can't wait to see this movie happen. Hope Ryan Reynolds is still up for the part.

I doubt that will happen now since he is Wade Wilson/Deadpool in X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

I know, but on an interview with IGN he said he would love to play The Flash if it's got good story.

If they go with who was supposed to do it with JLA its going to be Adam Brody (The OC, Mr and Mrs Smith, Thank You For Smoking)

Good Choice imo

I hate Adam Brody with a passion. Some geeky kid with an annoying voice. Ryan Reynolds has always sounded like a good choice.

Well if they redo casting, then maybe. But I would say Adam has the upper hand considering hes really not on any other short lists. But how many comic book movies can Reynolds be in? Blade Trinity? Wolverine?

I'm surprised that no one here has mentioned the long-forgotten 1990-1991 TV series of "The Flash" which used to air on CBS! But as far as a movie version goes, I could probably see the following actors take on the role of Barry Allen/The Flash:

1. Matthew Fox

2. Ewan McGregor

3. Nathan Fillion (Firefly, Serenity)

4. Josh Hartnett

5. Guy Pearce

6. Barry Pepper

7. Josh Lucas

8. Gerard Butler (maybe)

9. Liev Schreiber

10. Jon Hamm (Don Draper on AMC's "Mad Men")

Default ‘The Flash’ Development Slows Down Just A Bit

Quote:
With the Green Lantern film moving full steam head, scheduled to start production next year, what about the other DC comic book character films? There will undoubtedly be a third Batman sooner or later, but what about The Flash?

At San Diego Comic-Con this summer, comic book and screen writer Geoff Johns was tight-lipped and held back on revealing any details on his script treatment for the flick so we didn’t have too much to go on with the status of the project until now.

IGN recently spoke with Charles Roven, a producer on The Dark Knight, and apparently the future of The Flash is a little unclear at the moment - as is, Roven’s involvement…

In the interview, Roven explains that he was involved but that he was removed from the project because the The Flash was speeding in the direction Warner Brothers had in mind.

Quote:
“I was involved at one point with The Flash… And Warner Bros. came to me and said, ‘The work that you’ve been doing hasn’t yet resulted in something that any of us, including the filmmaking team, feel could be greenlit as a movie. We’re trying to accomplish something that takes into account the entire, rich DC character world, and we’d like to pull it back. That doesn’t mean that you aren’t going to be a part of it. We just want to take a different kind of approach. Do you mind if we try that?’ If we had something that was really working…”
Well, we at least know that The Flash is part of DC Entertainment’s game plan. By “rich DC character world,” does WB mean that they want more characters involved, possibly crossing over with their other in-development projects like Green Lantern? Roven continued,

Quote:
“Like, for example, they had something that was more or less working for them on Green Lantern, and now you have Martin Campbell directing it…But we didn’t. The David Goyer screenplay, that didn’t work. Goyer left the project. We then embarked with David Dobkin, trying to come up with another approach. We hadn’t even hired a writer at that point. So for us, we completely understood. I’ve been making movies with Warner Bros. for 15 years, so that was fine, but I hope one day there’s a way for me to get re-involved in the project. “
It’s not a nice development history and that worries me about the final product. Hopefully, when things are back on track, we don’t get something rushed and unpolished.

I’d like to see more DC live-action flicks come out to compete with the onslaught of features by Marvel Studios and Fox Studios, and like those two studios’ franchises of film, I’d like to see the DC solo character titles cross-over leading to some team-up event.

What do you want from The Flash movie and DC Entertainment’s line-up?

My guess is if they ever make this movie it's going to be for 2013 or 2014. I can't count the number of times they stopped moving forward on this. I would have prefered if they made this movie instead of Green Lantern. Green Lantern's world is much bigger than Flash since part of the story is done in space and other planets. Flash would have been cheaper to make.

My question is, since they added the budgets of all the previous Superman movies onto Returns, what the end budget will look like once it does get made.

Knowing Warner wants to turn every superhero property into a summer franchise, I can see them being very difficult on script approval. The average person does not know his backstory or his supporting cast, so even figuring out a concept might be hard for the Flash. I hope a movie gets made at some point.

This definitely applies to me. I know almost nothing about The Flash, although I do hope the movie gets made. However, I would benefit hugely form an origin type story.

Once upon a time, this was going to be a Wally West movie starring Ryan Reynolds. I'm sure the project is being retooled as a Barry Allen film now instead. And obviously, Reynolds is out of the picture. I'm curious to see how this plays out. And I hope they do fit Wally and Jay Garrick into the script, too. Flash has a long history. They should embrace it.

Yesterday, IGN ran a story about an interview with Charles Roven, a producer on The Dark Knight who was removed from working on the live-action film adaptation of The Flash.

It seemed from the report that the future of speedy DC Comics superhero was a little uncertain. Now comes a follow-up story featuring clarification from Dan Mazeau, who’s writing the screenplay for The Flash, where he addresses the misconceptions that arose from the title of IGN’s posting.

For fans of The Flash, the news is good.

In his message to IGN Movies, Dan Mazeau wrote the following:

Quote:
“Just to chime in on your latest article: The Flash has not been hobbled. Everything is moving forward as planned… I’m still writing the script. Geoff Johns is still consulting. Flash fans have no cause for concern, and — IMO — lots to be excited about.”
That’s more like it! I think this is a good thing for DC Entertainment to start showcasing some of their vast lineup of characters, hopefully spawning more long-lasting franchises other than their usual stars, Superman and Batman.

The original report, or at least its title, hinted at a delay or development issues. More accurately, Warner Brothers simply sought out more control in moving development in-house and the project is still moving forward according to play.

Bring on Neil Patrick Harris so he and Ryan Reynolds (Hal Jordan/Green Lantern) can entertain me onscreen together!

When Screen Rant learns more about The Flash, we’ll let you know.
