Spielberg had enough say over how KOTCS was released to get the HD-DVD-aligned Paramount to release it on Blu. Doesn't mean he owned the movie.

I'm sure Fox has dozens of other movies in its library in which a filmmaker has various different assurances of approval over presentation. They're still Fox titles. Like Star Wars.
If that means Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, wasn't HD-DVD already dead by the time of the home video release? It's a 2008 film.

Wikipedia says about HD-DVD
Quote:
In February 2008, after a protracted format war with rival Blu-ray Disc, Toshiba abandoned the format, announcing it would no longer develop nor manufacture HD DVD players or drives
So it was dead by the time the movie was released on home video.

No they're much larger than DVD cases, were given at point-of-sale with the purchase of the DVDs which were in standard retail packaging.

Yes it was digital, but because as you said there were few digital projectors, the film had to be converted onto film prints to be shown in most theaters. I recall reviews (including Roger Ebert's) reporting that converting the movie to a film print made it look kind of fuzzy and murky. But that's how most people had to watch it.

And because the movie needed to be converted ahead of time, there were actually a few differences in that version compared to the digital-projection version, which Lucas was able to continue to tweak up until it's release. I can't remember most of the differences, but I know there was an added scene or two in the digital version and a couple of different takes here and there.

Without the size comparison, it was hard to tell. That's really cool.

I saw it on a digital projector, so I'm not sure which scenes are different from the film prints. A new theater had just finished being built the previous year before II was released, and it had all the new tech, including a new quieter air conditioner. The old theater was so noisy.

Unless fox OWNS Star Wars and they have no choice. Kinda arguing against your own assumptions there buddy.

Trouble with this thread is people clinging to their own opinion and not bothering to read posts properly before spewing their bile. The point I was making is that if fox owns the distribution of a new hope in perpetuity as is widely assumed, they (disney)may be willing to strike a profit share, logo on front of movie deal, to get control back. Or, as appears to be the case, they bought out the rights to the other five films from fox and are stuck with a new hope remaining under fox control.

Why would fox relinquish control of its golden goose. The film is still laying.

And here is another great example of why any form of intellectual debate is not possible in this thread. READ the article posted before you comment. It was used, regardless of age, to demonstrate how fox owned distribution rights to all of the films for home release through to May 2020, but now disney own the distribution of the digital versions. Clearly they bought them back.

Funny how an article from 2012 is out of date, but most of you in here cling to a film released in 1977 that most of you never saw as you were too young.

I have contributed to this thread since it started, the contributions become less and less as who wants to get involved in the pointless back and forth sabre swinging that people like you try to provoke.

Lurking as you call it and not bothering to get involved in pointless, unsubstantiated arguing, is not high on my bucket list.

I had to copy the right directions, so I wouldn't get lost on the way to the distribution center.

The wide spread digital release of the Blu Ray editions of the films does prove one thing, disney has no immediate plans for the UOT. if you own the blu ray, the incentive to get these would have been only if they bundled the UOT with them. They haven't. They have put together a few new special features, and for some that will be enough to dip again. I said it before, the market for the UOT is too small to care about. The mass market will snap these up and when there is nothing left for disney to milk (read 40th anniversary at the earliest) they MAY then decide to roll them out.

I am not going to hold my breath. Star Wars is moving on, the new film will do a billion plus at the box office. Why do they need the chump change the UOT release will generate from a small section of the market.

This digital release seems to prove that they believe people will keep coming to the well regardless. I said earlier, throw in a few new special features and the lemmings will come to the cliff and throw themselves off. Reasonable statements tend to get lost in here due to the childish behaviour and grandstanding of a few.

I still think (my opinion only) that Kathleen Kennedy will continue to honour the legacy of her close friend, george Lucas, and will do nothing whilst he is alive to disrupt this.

This thread is doomed to repetition of the previous 10 pages over and over it seems, new news happens and people pop in not reading older pages and it gets stuck in an infinite loop!

I guess my naive hope is that this might be equivalent to the 3 disc box set of the fake movies that came out shortly before the 2 disc sets including the real movies, and that this might be shortly preceding an announcement of the real movies on Blu-ray with new 4K transfers.

I really enjoy how repetitive/bitter this thread is, like a watering hole for nagging elderly mothers arguing about who has the more disappointing children.

Or not bothering to read what was posted in context.

Trouble in here is opinion is fact. That by itself prevents any meaningful discussion from happening.

For those interested, trailers in one easy place for the digital versions. Regardless of version, still gives me chills and makes me want to break out the films for a viewing

Who said it would stop future BD releases? For one, Disney likes money even more than Fox. Besides, I was alluding to who will release future BD sets, and particularly whether or not we'll ever see the UOT on BD.

VUDU uses UltraViolet, so it's already in UV.
Others (even Vudu's own Twitter feed) have said that as fact, but I won't believe it till ANH has a UV logo on its movie listing in the bundle, same place as the DMA "D" logo on the others. (It's not there now, though some claim it has a UV ALID in its source code.) Besides, Vudu has always had non-UV titles.

We still have the mystery of the Lowry (or whoever they are now) 4k masters. Not needed for a digital release.

I heard they mostly do 6K negative scans on 35mm film then process it in a 4K DI. 8K is usually done on 70mm stuff.

Statement of truth. I've always thought this way when it came to Disney buying LucasFilm and him putting Kennedy there. She will not betray her friendship with Lucas. Not while he's alive and maybe pass then.

If they do, it'll be a while. I mean, how long have we been having this discussion about the theatrical versions getting a proper release on home video?

We're pushing 20 years, right?
