Or the Emperor could have yelled at Luke to turn to the Dark Side and then dubbed Ahnuld saying "Do it, do it now" before zapping him again.

No, they paid billions for some parts of George's universe and the rights to create more. The distribution rights for some of this still resides with Fox and will for some time.

I wrote a book. I can't myself get it into all corners for the world, so I publish it through a company that distributes it. Simple concept. In the case of Star Wars, Disney (while they technically could both own and distribute) simply own Star Wars, but can't distribute them all. That's still under Fox. Now...

DanielH at Vudu's forums has confirmed that (a) Ep IV will be UV and (b) Eps IV-VI will be the same version as Blu-ray (not UOT, contrary to the M-GO CSR earlier -- not that I believed him anyway).

Who is DanielH and why should he be believed over anyone else?

To be fair, as awful and annoying as all that added crap is, its all superficial alterations-- it doesn't really change the story or events, it just affects the way it is portrayed on screen. So which version is "canon" is totally irrelevant.

It would be like watching Blade Runner 2 and trying to decide if they were going off of the theatrical cut with the narration or not. It wouldn't really matter or make any difference to that movie or any other ones.

Lowry, now Reliance Media Works, has worked on 4K 16 bit remasters of the original trilogy, and if their recent restoration reel is anything to go by, it's yet another screw job:

4K Remaster:

Contrast to Despecialized Edition:

Embarrassing that someone without much resources and money like Lowry can make a better looking image.

I hate the company, but you are not looking at a finished release, the could still change the timing

I pray you're right. What did George Lucas see in this company that made him think they were the right people to remaster the films? Why not Bologna's L'immagine Ritrovata, the most renowned remastering facility in the world?

That's a very good company. They used to be with Kodak.

I want to see the ultimate boxset that includes all 4 major cuts of the original trilogy, as well as digital codes for all 4 cuts, and a 105 page book discussing the making of the movies.

But that's just me dreaming. I know that won't actually happen.

I saw this on metafilter. Amazing comparison shots in glorious 4k Technicolor. Somebody please tell me why Lucasfilm can't do this!??

It's a fair question. What did he think the reaction was going to be? Did he think everybody would just blindly accept it, no questions asked and not criticize him for it? Because if that's what he honestly thought would happen, then he needed to take a serious reality check.
He knew exactly what the criticism would be. He just doesn't care.

See, for him, it's not about the generation that loved and worshiped these films. It's about the generation(s) after that will see the Saga as I-VI, not as separate trilogies, hence the changes. Not to mention, if you've read any books on the guy, he's a serious perfectionist. The original trilogy has never matched what he had in his mind's eye. Having said that, I do think he knows when he's gone to far, when the integrity of the films is destroyed, which in my opinion, he's never even remotely crossed that line. The fanbase would probably disagree but I don't think he has.

It's not really hard to see his logic.

Exhibit 1 against your opinion:

What so-called "logic" allows for a young Hayden Christensen to be a Force-ghost while Obi-Wan is still Alec Guiness instead of Ewan McGregor and Yoda is the old mustachioed puppet instead of the ridiculous fighting bouncy-ball CG version found in Episode II?

My take is that it's more of GL giving a giant middle-finger to those who didn't like the prequels by sticking it to OT fans one last time.
