I think it was a matter of time. The Empire and Jedi SEs were afterthoughts in comparison to the SW SE so they didn't have very much time to dig up all of the thousands of elements that make up the end battle.

I don't think there is anything I specifically like about the Special Editions and later revisions. There's some stuff I don't mind, like the enhanced battle of Yavin and some of the more subtle stuff in Empire. Yup Nub was a pretty silly ending music so I guess I didn't mind them replacing that.

I found the 1997 versions and DVD editions fascinating back when they came out, and for years that was just what I watched. When I finally re-visited the originals again from fan-made DVD editions, I was taken aback a bit by how much I enjoyed them more without all the added effects and scenes. Most of the cgi effects in those really don't look like they belong in the movies and don't fit with the general aesthetic of the films.

Sure, that was the reasoning in 1997 - but how about now? Even as a stop-gap they could've painted out the offending mattes (as complicated as the shots are, they only amount to a few seconds of film at a time) instead of making steam whizz out of Artoo's dome. Oh, that George.

The first film in particular is much faster paced in the original version too. All those little added zooms and other camera moves and CG beasties and Jabba and Biggs might not seem like much on their own, but when totted up they start to drag on the film and disrupt the original rhythm that was found in the editing room. I'd gotten heavily into Star Wars on the back of the SE's in 1997 so when I saw the originals again (last time was when I was a kid and I borrowed the trilogy from a friend and copied them all onto one VHS in long play ) I was shocked at how Star Wars zipped along compared to the SE.

Default 2011 vs 2015

I noticed there's a release of the entire sage slated for Oct/2015. Can anyone tell me what's different about this release vs the 2011 bluray release? Thanks

Nothing but the artwork and if correct, is in a case now instead of the book style.

Give me the original, FOX/Disney. You know you want that money.
You know, it's funny becasue my g/f has never seen the untouched versions. She saw the movies for the first time on DVD when they came out in 2003, so when she sees people argue over them, she has no idea why.

Finished season one of Rebels and the Clone Wars film and I so want those teams to go back and make animated films of the prequels. Take the plots and rewrite them so I don't roll my eyes whenever a character opens their mouth to speak.

That's a good thing. She doesn't need to descend into the madness of online arguing.

Honestly, it's pointless. She likes the movies, but she isn't a fan of the series. Hell, she hasn't actually watched them since 2011. Plus, if I was going to show her the untouched versions, I'd rather it be in remastered 1080P quality over a DVD that was ripped from a poorly mastered laserdisc.

Star Wars isn't oscar worthy of anything except snazzy cgi effects. It was their movie magic that captured our hearts, typically when we were much younger

Completely wrong on so many levels, at least as far as the Original Trilogy goes.

Remember that the Star Wars films that won Oscars for Best Visual Effects (ANH, TESB, & ROTJ) were the ones without CGI effects, while the ones who were 99.44% CGI (the Prequels) didn't win Oscars at all. Hell, ROTS didn't even get a nomination for Best Visual Effects for that year's Oscars!

I've heard it gets better but I've only watched the movie and the first episode of Clone Wars so far and there were some pretty bad eye rolling moments in the Clone Wars movie for me. Ahsoka in particular was very annoying, especially with her stupid nicknames like "Sky Guy" and "Stinky". I've seen a few episodes of Rebels and enjoyed that. I'm going to watch that after finishing Clone Wars so it might be a while.

You're not the only person. I agree, that addition ruined the tension of that scene.

You should download Harmy's Despecialized Star Wars Trilogy original restorations. They are the closest to High Definition versions of the original trilogy without the changes until the studios bring out official HD blu-ray discs. Star Wars 2.5, Empire 2.0 and Return 1.0 (Harmy is working on 2.0 now for future download)

Harmy's Despecialized E IV FTW Even though I also own the official BDs/DVDs

Rebels is so much better than Clone Wars--even after Clone Wars itself actually gets better--that it's almost worthless to compare them.

(Good lord is that first season of Clone Wars atrocious.)
