At least Russell Mulcahy didn't insist on retroactively altering the first Highlander film in order to make the abysmal Highlander II look less awful.

Reasonable debate is one thing. SW message boards debates, arguably, are off the charts of reasonable.

And if you don't like my posts you can always ignore me, as opposed to "whingeing" about it.

I don't think I could sit through another 2+ hour go cart race starring an over-the-top precocious little shithead. Imagine how awful the originals would've been if Luke, Hand and Leia all ranged from 12-14 years old.
Isn't Force Awakens going to be exactly this...? OT cast handing things off to kids for the new trilogy.

What? No. Daisy Ridley isn't 10 and Boyega isn't a young teenager. There's an enormous difference between an actor in his/her young 20's and being Jake Lloyd in TPM - and that is the precise difference in the cast ages of the OT contrasted against TPM. Had Lucas had his way, he would've yet again made a movie centered around an annoying, precocious turd.

Someone heard "teens" and thought "that means 10".

Yeah but if the new trilogy was always gonna happen 20-30 years after the OT, the kids would've had to be older than 10. Han and Leia ain't spittin kids out past a certain age But yeah, I get what you mean. I didn't hate Lloyd by any means but I wouldn't wanna see another movie about little kids.

Yes, based on his track record that is exactly what any reasonable person would think - as that was the precise way it unfolded in TPM. He "restarts" the franchise with "young characters" - teens and children, I wouldn't expect it to be any different this time around (as opposed to hiring actors in their 20's as he did originally, and as Abrams did with these.). Abrams himself said Lucas' outline for Episode VII centered around "very young" characters.

Lucas completely lost his ability to make anything resembling a quality film decades and decades ago - using his outline for the new film would've been a recipe for box office poison. Anyone surprised by the fact Disney chose to toss his ideas is either naïve or delusional.

He sketched out ideas for episodes VII, VIII, and IX, to be set initially several decades after Return of the Jedi, and approached Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, and Mark Hamill about re-upping. He shared his story outlines with Disney during their courtship phase. But after the deal was done, “Disney and Kathy decided they should consider other options,” as Abrams (not then involved) diplomatically put it. He said Lucas’s treatments had centered on very young characters—teenagers, Lucasfilm told me—which might have struck Disney executives as veering too close for comfort to The Phantom Menace and its 9-year-old Anakin Skywalker and 14-year-old Queen Amidala. “We’ve made some departures” from Lucas’s ideas, Kennedy conceded, but only in “exactly the way you would in any development process.”

Funny thing is, he supposedly worked on fleshing out those outlines for the sequel trilogy to increase the value of LFL. And then Disney trashed them. Would've been nice if they could've at least loosely stuck to what Lucas had in mind, but oh well. We'll never know.

It's hardly Disney's fault that Lucas was under the delusion that his writing skills were of any value at that point...

Wouldn't have had a problem with Lucas shaping the stories, just keep him away from the screenplay and dialogue.

Dunno, if you look at TPM in terms of a simple outline I don't think any director on Earth could've made it work.

"Annoying child, young teen, and absurd Rastafari alien unite to go-cart race aliens."

Episode VII having a similarly inane outline wouldn't have surprised me.
