Episode VII having a similarly inane outline wouldn't have surprised me.
Your "outline" is only part of the movie haha. The outline of TPM is more like "Two Jedi (and alien...) unite to save a Queen and her planet from invasion, and stumble across a young boy who may fulfill an ancient prophecy." Not a bad outline for a story, but the screenplay and execution got in the way. (And I actually like TPM, flawed as it is.)

Oh, I see. So you don't know what an outline is. That is helpful in understanding your point of view.

No, I don't. I just don't go through every point step by step, as I know I am just wasting my time anyways, since the haters are going to hate.

If people can't put it together themselves, it's just like the prequels, they don't see it.

But yeah, it seems like there are a few people that keep coming on here just to say "oh look at the people arguing! Not like me, I don't care, 'cause I'm cool. That's why I'm on this Star Wars message board, to tell you all how totally lame are you are for discussing Star Wars."
If I insulted anyone, I am sorry. That is never my intention.

And then, over the course of the movie and the next two movies, the writer/director forgets to tell the audience what the prophecy is...

The prophecy of the Chosen One who will bring balance to the Force? Don't Qui-Gon and the Jedi Council discuss it? And Obi-Wan mentions it while Anakin is all cut and broiled, no? (Can't remember if it's brought up in AotC.)

The audience never hears the prophecy. They hear other people talking about it. Something about a vergence who will bring balance to the Force. That's it. That's all we have to go on.

Ok, you're right. But what else do we need to know about it? (Not tryna start an argument, just asking cuz honestly, this is the first time I've realized we never actually "know" the prophecy in the entire PT.)

It's been said Disney will never release the unaltered trilogy because Lucas doesn't want it. If Disney is not listening to Lucas about his ideas for the new movie(s), then perhaps they will not listen to him if he prefers the unaltered trilogy never get released. Disney will do what they want it appears - and if so, that is a very good thing. Lucas has been cut off from Star Wars and this really needed to happen.

They did that with the prequels, I think it was called The Symmetry of the Those Two Spaceships Going the Same Direction 20 Years Apart or some nonsense, it was a spiritual event whenever you saw four storm troopers in a line or something. It was quite moving ...

Actually I'm looking at one of Lucas' scripts right now, and I'm starting to think you're right. He does seem determined to use teens as lead characters.

[...]a lone figure, Luke Skywalker, a farm boy with heroic aspirations who looks much younger than his eighteen years.

A beautiful young girl (about sixteen years old) stands in front of Artoo.

...Yeah there's no way that movie would not suck.

There you go buddy! Good job.

That was exactly my point. In the original film, Lucas cast actors who were in their mid and young 20's (their fictional ages in the films were not stated) - which is precisely what Abrams did for this film. Abrams and Disney looked at Lucas' outline for Episode VII and scrapped it because, among other things, the film centered around characters that were "very young." If Lucas' outline for the new films had allowed the use of 20-somethings, Abrams would not have said the characters were "very young", and that they changed direction for this reason. If you don't see a difference in acting and character ability between people of Hammil's age during the original (mid 20's, same as Ridley and Boyega now) and, say, a 13 year old (who would probably end up being closer to Jake Lloyd's than anything, after Lucas was said and done with it) - I don't know what to tell you. This sure is a tough one to figure out

It represents Star Wars wonderfully, as Star Wars isn't about wars in space, or big, epic battles. It's a family saga, and the core story is about a father and his son, and their decisions....
Star Wars is about the good guys saving the galaxy (and the princess, too) from an evil empire. It's the story of the fulfillment of an unlikely hero's destiny and of the mystery and power of the "Force". The idea that it's a "story about a father and his son" seems like a bit of a stretch to me.

I'd say it's more like something the original creator changed his mind about after the fact.

Whatever works for you.

I think it's "rather" obvious, but that's just moo cow me.

You'd think Disney could just whip out their imagineering toolbox and just... wait for it... make the characters older. Unless the plot centered around diaper rash or something, then you're stuck.

Yeah, you keep saying that. Clearly at least one of us is convinced.

I would be interested in seeing a comic book made of Lucas' original story treatment for the sequel trilogy, similar to "The Star Wars" based off of his earlier script of the original.

Also, I guess he's retired now, but I always wanted to see Lucas make those microbudget short films he kept talking about wanting to get to. It would be interesting to see him do something that was closer to THX 1138 than Star Wars and see how it would turn out.

However it turned out he would just change it 4 more times.
