I think the current blu-ray is the way to go. As far as I know, the original version didn't have a regular DVD release. It's only on VHS or laser disc. There's probably laser disc rips out there. I recall reading about a scan of an original film print being done on original trilogy.com a while back. Didn't keep up with it to see if it was completed.

Why are CGI and green screening often targets of criticism for the PT even though plenty of other movies in the same genre have just as much of them?

It was particularly bad in the prequels because of the direction and blocking, but I think it's heavily criticized whenever it's used poorly.

It's obvious to an unbearable degree that the talent doesn't feel like they're part of the world the audience sees on screen.

Are the special features for the prequels on the Complete Saga boxset the same as the ones on the 2-disc DVDs of the prequels or does the saga have more?

No, almost* none of the special features were ported from the second DVDs to the Blu-ray set. I was shocked when the Blu-rays were released and the deleted scenes and documentaries from the older releases weren't ported over.

*I say "almost" just in case one slipped my mid.

I enjoy one but not the other.

Funny how that works sometimes.

My defense is 'sure, it's obviously another Death Star but who cares, it's fun. It's not as much fun as the first one but it's a hell of a lot more fun than the second one'.
It's interesting, we've had 8 Star Wars movies and in 5 of them the concept of a planet or planet-like object capable of destroying another planet is in them. It's safe to say the concept is a core part of the Star Wars universe nearly as much as Stormtroopers or Wookies.

No. Outside of the commentary, not one of the PT DVDs' features have been ported over, which is annoying because I hate having to keep DVD sets when I upgrade to bluray lol

Having just gone through the entire saga once again, this time with my two younger brothers, one (who's 11) who hasn't watched most of them in years and one (14) who had only seen Episode VII, and I find my rankings have changed slightly.

Let me preface by saying I'm 22 and grew up with the Special Editions on VHS. I've never seen the UOT, nor do I have any immediate desire to. Of course, I don't fault anyone for preferring the original versions, but they hold no nostalgia or relevance for me. I saw all the prequels in theaters and had no idea that they were so controversial until a few years ago. As an adult, I certainly recognize their flaws and I get frustrated because of how perfect they could have been, but I choose to accept them for what they are, which still provides me with plenty of entertainment. From least favorite to favorite, I'd rank them:

The Phantom Menace (6/10) - This movie definitely feels the most sterile to me. Oddly enough, Jar Jar and young Anakin don't bother me as much as some of the other choices (medichlorians, killing Darth Maul, immaculate conception, inconsistencies with OT, etc.) as well as just lacking the joy of the other films. Luckily, this film has some really high moments that greatly elevate it (Darth Maul, Duel of the Fates, Qui-Gon, etc) so I still find it an enjoyable experience. My biggest issue is that if this is supposed to be the first film to watch in the series, it's a poor introduction to Star Wars world as there's no explanation about the force. But like I said, I'm judging for what it is, not what it could've/should've been.

Attack of the Clones (7/10) - While this one is weaker in terms of story, it at least has more of a soul than Episode I. Ewan McGregor is a highlight as Obi-Wan and I enjoy a lot of the lure it offers up, even if the film itself doesn't explain it as much as I'd like.

Revenge of the Sith (8/10) - While it's my favorite of the prequel trilogy, it's easily the most frustrating. The highs are really high, but the lows are a complete pitfall. Everyone's already pointed out the flaws (it's too rushed, Hayden's delivery, NOOOOO, etc). What makes me like this movie more than the other two though is that it evokes a stronger emotional response from me throughout the film.

Rogue One (8/10) - I'll put this in spoilers in case anyone hasn't seen it yet:
[Show spoiler]It was really tough to decide if I rank this higher than Episode III, and I only decided to after seeing it a second time. During my first viewing, I was completely checked out during the first half. However, that second half was excellent, with the ending scene blowing my mind. When I saw it a second time, I was able to keep up much better with the narrative. What ultimately made me realize I liked it better than Episode III is that while Rogue One is very flawed, it doesn't have the pitfalls of Episode III, but manages to hit almost the same highs.

Return of the Jedi (9/10) - Pacing problems is the only reason I rank this lower than the others. It's still a near perfect film, and the end battle is probably my favorite moment in the sage. However, this is the only film that has changes that I loathe (the addition of NOOOO and young Anakin appearing as a force ghost).

The Force Awakens (9/10) - I'm still amazed how much I love this film. Yes, it's a retread of A New Hope, but what's wrong with that? It's meant to be a soft reboot in order to start a new trilogy. The new characters are superb, the hit all the nostalgia sweet spots without overdoing it, and it made me want Episode VIII immediately.

The Empire Strikes Back (10/10) - Even though I rank this second, I think it's the best made Star Wars film. I'm not sure what I could say that hasn't been said already.

A New Hope (10/10) - It's simply my favorite. It embodies everything I love about Star Wars. I recognize I may be completely blinded by nostalgia, but I don't care. I love everything about the movie.

The light saber battle in Phantom Menace in particular is very obviously green screened. And it stands out even more in HD. I find it VERY distracting.

Just to let you know,

Midichlorians ≠ The Force.
