I'd almost recommend just doing IV, V, III, VI for machete order and lumping II in with all the "extra" content.
If you're a newbie to the series, I don't think skipping Attack of the Clones works. As bad as most of the love scenes are in AOTC, it's important to set up Anakin's Love for Padme. That's the ultimate reason he falls hard into the dark side. Also, the clone army is kind of important to understand. And I think the fight with Count Dooku in Revenge of the Sith plays better if you've seen the previous movie. And no one should miss Christopher Lee battling Yoda! As up and down as Attack of the Clones is, one of the best experiences I've had in a movie theatre was enjoying the crowd reaction to the Dooku/Yoda duel! Bottom line: Attack of the Clone is important narratively to the saga as a whole, especially if you're watching the movies for the first time.

Something TRULY terrible didn't happen until 1999. Some things stupid, petty and moronic happened in 1997.

People generally loved The Matrix when it was first released, don't start spreading rumours!

The thing you must remember is seeing stuff like the cut Jabba scene from Star Wars back in 1997 was like finding the Holy Grail! What we didn't know back then was that we'd be stuck with various versions of the Special Editions for the next 20 years. It's neat to see that Jabba scene but I think it should be put back into the deleted scene bin. I think George was right to cut it back in 1977. It's better to first see Jabba in Return of the Jedi. Talking about him in Star Wars and Empire builds up his character. Seeing him first in Star Wars deflates his power and mystery.

Special editions aside, 1997 was actually the last time for most people to see the movies projected on film with decent prints. I'm glad I went and saw them all!

The Jabba reveal truly one of the biggest punches of SE. Maybe worse than Han/Greedo.

It's amazing to think about that most everything in life will generate so many different opinions by different people. But pretty much everyone who isn't named George Lucas has the exact same opinion on Han/Greedo, ANH Jabba, Noooooo, etc. I don't think there exists a single person who is both aware of the changes and believes they are positive.

I seem to remember that, when the films were released on VHS and LD in 1995 -- the "faces" covers -- that it was marketed as the last time the original versions would be available. I bought the letterboxed VHS slipcase set.

ETA: "One last time."

Didn't see this posted anywhere else, but...

Mark Hamill (kinda) talks about the Prequels, George Lucas:

http://www.vulture.com/2017/01/mark-...last-jedi.html

And concerns about playing Luke again after so many years:

Heh. I had a VHS version of the THX remasters which had a sticker on that clearly said "the original Star Wars available for the last time".

Not really, I had seen that scene as a kid back in the early 80s on a behind-the-scenes documentary on TV except that, of course, it had Declan Mulholland and not that horrible CGI thing.

I remember those taglines, and didn't for one minute think it was to do with the Special Editions replacing the original theatrical versions. Even thought the "Special Edition" was just that, a one off special event. It was only when the special edition changes made it to the first DVD set, the realisation set in.

Even though I'm perfectly happy with the special editions and love the Blu-ray set, I would gladly buy the originals if they were released. I've bought these movies several times already, and I even own the 2006 DVDs that have the crappy Laserdisc transfers of the originals as a bonus. I've also kept all the prequel DVDs and the original trilogy bonus disc because none of those extras were carried over.

I've seen other people say that, but maybe I'm stoopid or something because what else could it mean?

No. Methinks you're not the one that's stoopid.

Back in 1995 I only remember vague rumblings of a re-release at the cinema.

I remember hearing rumours about cosmetic changes to go along with the photochemical restoration (which the much-hoopla'd THX versions weren't actually derived from) that was being carried out at that time, so I always took the sticker and associated "one last time" marketing at face value.

I assumed the 'one last time' meant on that particular format, we all knew VHS was ending and DVD wouldn't be the last format etc.

I was reading about DVD in PC magazines at that time, sure, but I never assumed that the SW marketing was just referring to the current formats (especially because no-one had a clue that DVD would blow up like it did).

Who knew so much could be read into that statement?
