As much as I agree it's probably for the best that Lucas is out of the picture, my "death bed wish" would be to read Lucas' own outline/notes for how he would have made Episodes VII-IX. Still hoping we'll get some kind of "legends" publication -- non-canon, of course -- that exploits that curiosity. For better or worse, he is "the maker" (to use Threepio's words) and his vision for the whole saga will always carry more validity for me, even if it would have included a whole tribe of Gungans teaming up with Ewoks in Episode IX.

I'd have been fine with that if they would have all died in battle.

Ownership and "final cut" are two different things. You don't need to own the films or the studio to have final cut. Disney and Lucasfilm can do whatever they want with the new films, but they can't alter the first six unless Lucas waived his right to final cut. I'm pretty sure he gave them full rights to release earlier versions of the films, including the UOT, but they can't release completely new versions of the first six that keeps everything people like and changes everything people hate.

Just...ugh.

As much of a "purist" as people think me to be, I don't mind changes to existing material that are done with taste and restraint and respect the original. I like all the CG stuff in the New Hope end battle. I like the expanded universe celebrations at the end of Jedi. Hell, I've never minded the Jabba bit in New Hope for what it is because it's an entirely additional scene, and I really like the redone CG (using the Phantom Menace CG model of Jabba) of the 2004 version. But man, those extra 2011 alterations push the bounds of Star Wars superfluity like never before, and that's saying something.

I agree, that still doesn't excuse how thoroughly amateurish it looks though.
Wow...you sound just like me. I basically feel the same way. I'm all for the theatrical versions getting a proper release but I also want a consistent version of the SE available too.

I feel like they pleased neither group of fans. Purists only had those pan and scan dvds years ago. Meanwhile SE fans lived through THREE rounds of changes but somehow they never got the light sabers right and goofed on so many other things.

George Lucas was all about updating these movies so I see no reason why he wouldn't fully support Disney doing one more special edition. I'm sure he'd love it if Disney took the 2004 Jabba and used modern CGI to add in a version that looked even more like the ROTJ Jabba. Hell, maybe they could even rebuild a new puppet and drop it in.

Or how about updating any dated CGI from the PT?

Go all out with it I'd say.

Give the purists a great version of the theatrical cits and give the SE fans a consistent, QUALITY version of the SE.

I hear what your saying about the Special Editions but how many face lifts do we need to give these films? Personally, I'm done with them. I say get your hands on the despecialized editions and call it a day.

Let's all send our thoughts to the universe/Force for Disney to release the UOT! I like to think something like the Force actually exists so let's use it to get our original versions back!

It wouldn't hurt to bring balance back to the Force, after bombarding Lucas with the Dark Side for the last 20 years

So if the Force is real, can I make a voodoo doll of Bob Iger?

Make Han shoot first (and only first)
remove the "Nooooooo." from Vader in ROTJ
bring back Sebastian Shaw as the ghost...

and I will love Disney from here to the moon. The other changes don't bother me.

I'd love to think I've been the Jedi Master sending all these thoughts and suggestions out to Lucas and Lucasfilm and now Disney but the huge pile of Star Wars crap I've bought over the past forty years suggests rather strongly that while the Force might be real I'm pretty clearly the stormtrooper in this equation and every other blaster, light saber, video tape, album, cd, dvd, Blu-ray, comic book, real book, poster, model kit and t-shirt is exactly the droid I've been looking for.

Seeing the SE trilogy at the time on the big screen, I remember being disappointed with the lack of genuine deleted material reinstated - most of it being new cgi - cosmetic or entirely new scenes.

When I saw the new SE Wampa cave footage,I had hoped the rest of the rebel base/Wampa footage would be used. Reworked, either by using the 1997 suit CGI'd into archival deleted material - the way cgi Jabba had replaced the original actor for the deleted Ep IV scene - or new scenes filmed on scaled down sets.

Similarly for JEDI, I wanted to see the sandstorm sequence back. Instead we got a new expanded musical number and a bit more Fett.

I actually wouldn't mind seeing 3PO tricking those Snowtroopers thrown back in, that was great. He has such a whipping boy role in Empire as it is, give him a little glory...

Not to mention all the Biggs footage on Tattooine or Luke training on Degobah.

Yeah, that's what's really burns me, all that good stuff that's still sitting in storage.
