Take the Fox fanfare. Take it! I'll miss is, but I'll gladly sacrifice it to get the unaltered original trilogy.

I know to some people it may sound ridiculous to complain about a logo being altered, but filmmakers DO have the opening logos in mind when they're setting up the tone of their movie. That's why so many films, like Star Wars, have customized opening logos. They're not just trying to be cute.
The opening logo must be kept in! John Williams specifically composed the main theme to be in the same key as the Fox fanfare, so it's kind of part of the soundtrack!

Btw... is it reading too much into things that the current saga set just dropped to $59 at Walmart and now at Amazon just 2.5 weeks before this year's big Star Wars Celebration? I mean, I suppose the lower price could be a marketing tie-in to Rogue One's release. But I guess what I'm really hoping for is that retailers are starting to clear out old inventory because a new release is about to be announced. Maybe? Please? Pretty please?
No way. It's Rogue One and only because of Rogue One.

The "FOX" fanfare is even on the original 6 Star Wars soundtrack albums.

Really? I don't think any of the original soundtracks had the fanfare on them, but the 1993 Soundtrack Antholgy and 1997/2004 releases of the OT soundtracks did. But either way, it must be kept in!

That is correct. It's only on the Special Edition versions.

It's also on the 1993 Soundtrack Anthology, which are the original versions, not the special editions.

The Fanfares were on the '93 Anthology box set and on the individually released soundtracks for the Special Editions from 1997 which were subsequently re-released in other configurations including a couple of box sets in the last several years.

The Prequel soundtracks have never included the fanfare as far as I'm aware. The music on those releases is presented non chronologically and is not the complete score, similar to the original LPs of the first 3 films.

No they're not. The original versions were released in 77, 80 and 83. None of those original soundtracks had the fanfare.

I think he means that they aren't the Special Editions, not necessarily that they are the same configurations as the original album releases.

I don't consider the albums as "the special editions." They were just released then to coincide with the special editions. However, regardless, none of the 6 original albums include the fanfare so, regardless, he's wrong.

Well at least in the case of Return of the Jedi, there are 2 original compositions that do not appear on the 1997 expanded soundtrack, which were replaced by newly composed material exclusive to the SE.

I'm not 100% positive, but A New Hope might also have SE exclusive music for scenes that were new to that cut of the film.

You are correct about Jedi but no new music was composed for ANH. The music that was tracked into Mos Eisley is in the trash compactor section of the soundtrack album as it was originally intended.

But, again, the original releases never included the fanfare.

Even though the Fox logo and fanfare have been omitted from streaming and post-2016 TV airings, I am confident that Disney will keep the Fox logo for post-2020 home video releases. The last thing Disney wants to do is disappoint its customers and omitting the Fox logo and fanfare, they will have a field day. So I know they'll work something out with Fox to prevent this from happening.

Besides, home video releases of most Disney films preserve the original (versions of) logos. The Paramount logos for the Marvel films released under their label are still present and accounted for.

I hope you're right but I honestly don't see it happening. And, tbh, the bigger issue will be the Indiana Jones movies. All 4 have the Paramount mountain fading into something else. There's no way to edit around that.

Paramount made sure to retain the perpetual distribution rights to the Indy films that they made, bearing in mind that these were NOT fully self-financed by Lucasfilm like SW was from Empire onwards. (This is why they're not on DMA, for example.) IIRC they'll even get a cut of the proceeds of the Disney-backed Indy 5 because the initial deal between Paramount and LFL (back in the day) was for five films.

When I said that the 1993 Soundtrack Anthology were the original versions, I meant that they were soundtracks to the original versions of the movies, not the special editions. They aren't perfect, as some "wrong" takes were used, but I've never heard of the CDs in that set referred to as special edition versions. It even has Yub Nub!

I’ve had this version for quite some time …

… Never really cared for the “Prequels”. Anyway, I started to order the DigiBook “Complete Saga”, but Amazon shows a picture for the new one (with the Darth Vader cover) on the DigiBook’s page. A phone call to Amazon solved nothing. I was told that a report would be submitted but it would take a week to fix the picture IF it’s wrong (probably be off sale by then). Anyway, in reading the review, these are “altered versions” of the original trilogy (not sure how “altered” beyond Han not shooting first). As my version came out at the same time, I assume that they’re just as altered and therefore not worth keeping if I spring for the DigiBook …

… Can anyone confirm that?

All the Star Wars BDs of Episodes IV - VI are of the 2011 version of the Special Editions. It doesn't matter if it's the 3-BD "Original Trilogy" set, the 2011 9-BD "Complete Saga" digibook set, or the 2015 9-BD "Complete Saga" brick-case set with the Darth Vader cover art, as the movie discs are all the same anyhow.

The one major advantage that the "Complete Saga" sets have over the Original Trilogy set is that the bonus discs are excellent, including three hour-long vintage "making-of" documentaries (one for each of the OT films).

All that said, you can get the exact same discs and packaging as the 2015 9-BD "Darth Vader" brick set for $47.xx shipped from Amazon UK right now. Both the US and UK discs are region-free, and the only difference as compared to the US set is that the UK version has those annoying ratings logos on the box's front and spine.

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind. I'm really a sucker for DigiBooks, although the pix I've seen says that this isn't actually a DigiBook. If the price skyrocket's, do you happen to know if the 2015 UK or US versions contain the little Special Features booklet - or is that unique to the "DigiBook"?
