I meant which character made that sound. I don’t think most people would know it was Obi-Wan who made the sound. It starts off sounding like a siren so I’m sure it was confusing to viewers back in the day. The special edition version sounds more like a person making that sound but it’s so ridiculous and jarring.

When I first saw the movie in '77 (when I was six), I thought Obi-Wan was running from some big monster we didn't see ('cuz of the way Obi-Wan was moving), and it was therefore this big unseen monster who made the noise and scared away the Sand People. I didn't even bother wondering "where did the monster go??" moments later, lol. Then, as I listened to The Story of Star Wars record, read the novelization and the comic books, I eventually got it.

Just be glad that with as many times as Lucas changed the call this last time he didn't have Ben yell out "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO" as he saw the sand people standing over Luke.

Haha... that might actually be preferable to the current Krayt Dragon call "whooopdeewhooop" sound. And while we're at it... I think they missed a tie-in opportunity in LAST JEDI with their spelling of Crait. Why not call it Krayt and have it be the home planet of the dragons? Head-scratcher.

Dude, I literally thought that it was THE Krayt. What else would it be? What? Oh.

It was obviously a while ago but I don't remember thinking about it too terribly much. I think my vague impression was that it was a horn of some sort and when Ben came on-screen I though maybe it was him howling or something maybe?

But I can say fairly confidently that it didn't occur to me that it was meant to be an animal noise until reading that in some thread or another. Hell, maybe even this one.

There's three distinct versions. The original, which seems to have been forgotten about*, does indeed sound like some sort of beast IMO (and was reused elsewhere in the film so that's probably why Lucas changed it in later years), the do over for the 2004 remaster which does indeed sound like a siren, and then the ghastly 2011 iteration which sounds like a cat caught in a blender.

It's things like that and Artoo's Rocks and Vader's NoooOOoooOOO and the useless embiggening of Jabba's palace door and the alterations to Artoo's bunker freakout which tipped me over the edge as far as Lucas' continued tinkering is concerned, so I sold the OT Blu-rays. I can put up with alterations to a certain degree but the more Lucas chipped away at them the more the defacements began to outweigh the improvements.

*"Mission accomplished!" said George, to no-one in particular.

None of the Krayt Dragon calls sounds great but the original is still the best, imo.

I would have preferred (for the SE) seeing a Krayt Dragon out on the Tatooine dunes instead of a herd of Banthas.

Now, I believe it came across to me on first viewing that Obi Wan had made that sound but memory can be tricky and I was but a wee nipper. But it wasn't until a couple years later I figured it was a trick of the Force and felt like a true fan.

Obi-Wan's Krayt Dragon Call Scene Comparison 1977-2011 - YouTube
To me the 2004 one sounds like a siren mixed with a loon. And the original sounds like a siren or some type of alarm followed by a beast growling. I definitely prefer the original but I find it strange that it starts with that alarm sound. I can’t imagine a dragon making that noise.

So the Dragon call on the Blu-ray is Ben Burtt’s voice?

You will be older than Yoda before the STAR WARS HOLIDAY SPECIAL is (if ever) released (in whole) on disc.

I have the whole holiday special from beginning to end on DVD. Of course it’s not official but good enough for now. I was hoping that Disney would release both the H.S. & the two Ewok films on proper Blu-Ray since Disney is calling the shots now.
