I thought that TLJ was the end of the Skywalker saga? Though, IX will be the final scenes of Leia and wrap-up of Kylo Ren`s story (one would hope so anyways), there really is nothing left of the Skywalker family story to tell. Well, unless there is a distant cousin somewhere in the galaxy just waiting to make an appearance.

I think that people forget, or want to forget, that he had a bigger hand in Empire than what some want to acknowledge. Though, he may have been on set a few times or during some of the filming, he wasn't there for the day-to-day drudgery of shooting scenes. I think there was an issue with the film going over its shooting budget/time and Lucas stepped in a bit more. I don`t remember exactly, though, but, I did read the making-of book. But, he had more say-so than a lot of people want to give him credit for in that situation. It wasn't like they just handed the finished film over to him and he was like some omnisent GOD that gave them the thumbs up to release it. But, yeah, I can`t wait to get into the 3rd book and see how much more hands-on he was for ROTJ. And, I am assuming that those making-of books have been honest in their portraying of the truth. Hoping they are more truth than revisionism. But, there are other sources on the subject from the time the movies were made from 3rd party journalists, with less possible bias towards Lucas`s favor.

Where did people say that wasn't the case with Empire? He really wasn't on-set a lot (becoming so frustrated with the overruns, having put up the rights to Star Wars as collateral, that he eventually fired Gary Kurtz) but when it came to POST production he oversaw it all, it was done back in America for a start. They didn't just hand the finished movie over to him, but nor could he undo the approach that Kersh had taken with the material. But he was on-set FAR more on Jedi and that really is his movie in all but name.

The Special Edition changes kind of disproves that. Of the three OT films that is the one ruined the most.

I'm just happy he barely touched Empire. I actually didn't mind ROTJ changes until he threw in the NOOOOO! in that perfect Vader scene. I swear he added that in as his last f you to the fans who ridiculed him all those years.

Not necessarily. He might’ve always preferred ROTJ over the other two and thus decided to change it the most because it’s “deserving of his extra care and attention.” I think it’s difficult to really know what his motives are.

That's on people, then. The OT never described Anakin as noble. It said he was good at some stuff... and it said he had anger issues. And that he had a friend. Noble was something people made up themselves as a form of headcanon, only to get mad when Lucas didn't play along.

Anakin was a Jedi Knight in the Republic and a pupil of Obi-wan, who also said that Anakin was a good friend. Obi-wan was a noble Jedi Knight, who described the lightsaber as being a weapon from a more civilised age.

When you put all this together, it doesn’t seem like much of a stretch that people probably thought that Anakin was a noble, good person too, before he fell. Why would Obi-wan have considered him a good friend at one point, if he didn’t share at least some of the good qualities of Obi-wan?

Basically the main problem with me is that I don't feel invested in the characters, so when I watch the whole thing play out, it feels very hollow and perfunctory, not like I've watched a great friendship deteriorate and a tragedy unfold.

Then, there is The Clone Wars series. Guess what? Anakin is a noble, good person, a great Jedi, and we really see his friendship and camaraderie with Obi Wan. It REALLY helps to watch as a buildup to Episode III. It doesn't make III a good film, IMO, but it gives you better context with everything that unfolds.

TCW Anakin is that and more. As well showing him at his best they also managed to convey hints of genuine menace.

I'd rather watch the 1997 edits of these movies than the 2011 versions. Would prefer the original originals over all of those, but one step at a time.
