Instead of worrying about "Maclunky!" just remember "Harmy" exists and you don't have to put up with this utter nonsense.

I'm only buying the 4K set if

1) Disney includes the original theatrical versions in 4K
2) Or at least has them in HD.

Or Disney could really play the vault card with the originals. Make them a limited release, and get every last enthusiast still interested in them to fork out.

That way Lucas keeps his preferred versions for mainstream consumption on plus. And the enthusiasts get the versions they want on a disc.

Limited edition of the UOT has always made the most sense. People who want it can go out of their way to get it, and Disney doesn't have to worry about "but what if we mass-produce a version of these movies that people don't recognize or care about anymore?" Win-win.

I think there's hundreds of pages of evidence across the internet to show people care. Maybe myself and others were to quick in thinking Lucas is gone, Disney will give us justice. Yeah Disney...

Now I'm starting to feel like the old lady in Titanic. They only exist in my memory.

People never seem willing to admit that those of us who care are in the extreme minority. And Disney/LFL knows this.

Maybe. Even still, a minority that spends a ridiculous amount of money on physical media a year.

True, but this minority doth sometimes have an inflated sense of self worth just because they spend so much on physical media and spend a fair bit of time in an echo-chamber that reinforces their views, when the person on the street won't give two hoots about the UOT or physical media in general.

That doesn't mean we're not a minority worth catering for, there wouldn't be a vast (and seemingly increasing) array of indies hawking their wares if there wasn't a market for it, but Disney have always marched to the beat of their own drum when it comes to physical media, always. Ironically enough they were the ones producing the most lavish boxsets out of all the major studios in the laserdisc days, but since then their priorities have shifted and I don't just mean here and now with 4K. Physical media is something that doesn't really concern them any more, they're just going through the motions, and when it comes to wanting the UOT those people are in an even smaller minority of that collector mentality subset. (I think it's a moo point anyway as long as Lucas is still breathing.)

Still if we aren't catered for in some fashion, that leaves a gap in the market for piracy. And that's probably why Lucas brought those limited (lol) DvD editions out.

Not to mention that the longer they wait without releasing the UOT, the more new fans the franchise gets who are only familiar with the modified versions. The UOT becomes increasingly obsolete and the ones who care further dwindle in number. I'm not even sure that Lucas' death will really mean anything after a point. They should be preserved for posterity, and maybe they are (I've honestly lost track of that information), but making them available for consumers will become less and less of a priority as time goes on. Sad but true.

I haven't seen these, but none of the the new changes surprise me, of course. It looks like the colors and shadow details are greatly improved. I am disappointed some of the Lowry side effects of frozen grain, some DNR, etc. are being noted and were still around by 2011-12 when these new masters were created. However, these sound like massive upgrades over the 2011 BDs which is good enough for me given the circumstances. I really couldn't watch those 2011 BDs any longer as the PQ was never that good and aged terribly.

I'll be able to watch 4K77 1.4, etc. for the originals as far as that goes.

Both worlds will still need to exist, but we knew that.

A difference of a couple of frames isn't something that anyone would spot in motion, the 2011 was where it was changed so that they shoot at (virtually) the same time and in the 4K it's now been timed down to the frame. That 4-way comparison vid (soon to be five way? ) neatly frames your earlier amazement at it having been changed again for the 4K because Lucas literally changed it with each prior version (97, 04, 11) so this latest one was par for the course, I'd have been more surprised if he hadn't changed it again.

I guess it's Greedo pulled the trigger first, but Han actually shot first. . .

Do you 2019 bro? I don't think we're allowed to mention any of these by name any more but there are loads of fan restorations out there, to the point where any truly dedicated SW nut will have acquired the UOT already (and in rather spiffy form, not those shite DVDs) which also makes any kind of official release less likely.

The DVDs are shite but I'm sticking with them. Just can't be bothered to find and download the fan ones.

Funny how the most bootlegged things among fans are things not made available by legit means. The UOT, The Abyss, True Lies, The Terminator (with mono), Song of the South etc

Evidently not. I am aware of those, but it's still piracy. All be it passionate piracy

Everything im about to say isnt directed at you personally, but im just gonna use your comment to bounce off of.

Dunno about to quick to think it, but it's certainly no surprise that people did.. New company, new opportunities! The only thing that then put up the stone wall or held up a big sign of 'End of Subject' was the time when Kathleen Kennedy said she wouldnt want to release the films differently to how George wants them, or wouldn't want to cause friction to her friendship with him in the process.

If someone's answer would be that it's a contractual agreement, well i dont think it would matter even if it isnt/wasnt, because i think she still wouldn't wanna do it because of probably then causing an awkwardness in her relationship with George Lucas.

I dunno if Kathleen Kennedy is the be all and end all, (i know she is in some respects of her position) but that led me on to think maybe an only other answer or solution to how they could get released, is if someone else at Disney made the decision who has little or no involvement with Lucas. Then that person wouldn't be coming from a position of having to worry or care what George thinks. Or if George did get angry, that person can just say, "Well George, that's business". Or to put it another way, "We own these films now George, we can do what we want with them".

One final point to do with it being said the market is to small or the audience figure of those who have an intrest in the UOT is to small for Disney to bother with re-releasing them, well in one way i maybe dont agree, is that studios are constantly releasing old or obscure movies on Blu-Ray which surely must have an audience level at least on a par with those intrested in the UOT.
