It's not just a generation thing but it does help. I am 42 and of course saw the originals in theaters but I love the prequels. I rank them this way (and this is IMO so please stay nice I am not attacking your first born )

1. The Empire Strikes Back
2. Revenge Of The Sith
3. A New Hope
4. The Phantom Menace
5. Attack Of The Clones
6. Return Of The Jedi

The poll says which is your favorite Star Wars movie. Not which movie do you think is the best. There is a subtle difference. In this case, I stand behind Phantom Menance as my favorite movie but the best movie of the bunch is A New Hope. Phantom Menance is my favorite because of the Playstation game. Star Wars is the best movie because it worked best when the movie was about two droids and not the Jedi.

Favorite is still Episode IV. No matter the version, it's basically a perfect film. The only other one is The Godfather...

I love all the SW movies!

I prefer most of the "fixes" made to the OT.
I'm open to George making more fixes - esp to EP I. How about a CGI yoda in Ep 1 - that puppet looks pretty bad.

I can't wait to see all 6 again. I just can't watch DVD anymore....

Is it 2011 yet (of course it's not been officially announced yet....)

This.

I know it's cool to say that Empire is your favourite - and it is a terrific film - but it lacks the fun factor of the original Star Wars. Actually, all the others lack that infectious sense of fun because they're all tied into the 'Saga'. Which leads me to my next point...

I enjoy Episode 4 greatly as a standalone movie too, as no matter what tosh Lucas likes to spout about having a grand plan, Star Wars works perfectly well as a one-shot deal.

That's part of the reason why it's my favorite. Make no mistake, somehow, Lucas has manufactured a Saga around a standalone film and I absolutely adore the Saga. But, Episode IV is the film. It just works. The editing. The score. The characters. The tech. The action. Everything just works.

Again...an almost perfect film....PERFECT.

Only just seen this poll.

Voted for Empire , like many others.

Does not surprise me that it's so far out in front.

What does surrprise me is that one of the new gen films (Ep3) scores higher in the poll than Jedi.

Granted, Jedi may be the weakest of the original trilogy but it's still far, far ahead of any of the 3 new films, imo.

Ep6 is Jedi.

Jedi has serious deficiencies, so I'm not surprised at all.

I've always had a problem with Empire...that's why I have it behind Attack of the Clones.

Make no mistake. In terms of production design, score, editing, acting, visual effects (aside from Revenge of the Sith), action, and direction, the Empire Strikes Back is the pinnacle of the Saga.

But...and this always been my "but" about it, the plot is pretty much dropped after the first 25 to 30 minutes and it focuses all on character from the rest of the film.

Now, that does make it unique in this genre but it's always rubbed me the wrong way. In contrast, Attack of the Clones lacks almost everything I've listed above that makes Empire so great, except for the plot. In this instance, Attack of the Clones (considering it's a mirror image of the Empire Strikes Back) balance character and plot through out the entire film. It's kind of astonishing, in a way. It goes back and forth between the two to drive the narrative to the climax. I've always wished the Empire Strikes Back was structured that way.

But, now with it being part of a Saga, it's uniqueness is even more interesting because it's the only one in the entire series that's all about character...that works.

I just have a love/hate relationship with that film. I was only two when it was released so the revelation at the end of the film was never the pivotal moment in my youth that many experienced. In a lot ways, I envy everyone who was of the right age to comprehend that revelation. And yet, not having been there, has made me feel like a different Star Wars fan. I wasn't old enough to let that film and that revelation warp my brain as to what a Star Wars film should be that a lot of the fanbase has.

I will always admire that film but I can never fully embrace it like I can with the other films in the Saga.

It's funny you say all that -- I feel almost literally the exact opposite. Attack of the Clones is painful for me to watch. I feel there is 0 plot, bad acting, bad story, confusion, etc. (There are some awesome scenes, no doubt, like the Jango scenes).

On the flipside, I feel Empire is cohesive and to-the-point. Rebels are hiding - Rebels are found - Rebels escape and disperse - Rebels finally come together. The story focuses on what our main characters are doing to get from "found" to "together" (i.e., Luke learns the Force, Han and Leia fall in love and shoot some stuff).

Funny how 2 people can see the same things so differently. Neither of us is wrong though.

P.S. I was also 2 when Empire was released.

What's so confusing about Clones?

Attempted assassination-investigation-Anakin takes Padme to Naboo to be safe-Obi goes to Kamino, finds clone army, follows Jango to Geonosis, gets captured-Anakin goes to Tatooine to find momma, goes to Geonosis to rescue Obi-big battle-the end. A bit more complex perhaps but not confusing.

Took my GF at the time and her friend (who had NEVER seen a SW film) and they loved it.

Yeah, Clones isn't a hard film to understand. I mean, it's all right there.

But it is the worst film of the six film saga in my opinion. It just seems to float around with plot holes being thrown at you left and right. It's probably the best example of how poor of a director Lucas and that he should stick to writing.

If there are many plot holes you mind naming a few?

(and since he wrote it shouldn't it be "stick to directing"?)

Cool! Not for me though. (E.g., who is Syfo Dias?)

Sure.

1) Anakin and Padme magically fall in love after not seeing or speaking to each other for 10 years while his personality is comparable to a brick. Why?

2) Padme's assassin using a poisonous worm to kill her rather than just dropping a bomb in the
window. Why?

3) The Jedi are overly efficient in all of their record keeping yet no one noticesthe planet of Kamino being deleted from the archives. Why?

5) Yoda sends all of the Jedi to Geonosis when there are more than enough Clones to do the job. Why?

6) Kenobi is defeated so quickly by Dooku. Why?

There's plenty more, but that's the first few that pop in my head.

Right, the original theatrical release simply said Star Wars with nothing attached to the title at all.
