Of course, I'd much rather get them in May, but as we all know that's not going to happen.

I'd like to get really surprised with ultimate editions.

However, I don't think they are going to be Reference quality discs all the way, as ANH was shot on a low budget with very limited technology, and you can only do so much to improve PQ without introducing EE or nasty DNR.

Also, the soundtrack of ANH is not going to sound that great I guess.

The other films should fare much better, and I think ROTS will look and sound perfect!

How about you?

Plus, if Lucas simply decides to use the same masters he used for the 2004 DVDs, that's going to be awful. Darth Vader's lightsaber was pink. PINK!!!! He really needs to re-correct the color-timing on those films.

The Episode I DVD had a pretty bad transfer as well, so hopefully they struck a new master for the Blu-Ray. I suppose they must have if they're tweaking bits of it, like adding digital Yoda. Hopefully all that pesky edge-enhancement will be gone.

Episode II and III should be perfect digital transfers-- both were shot with 1080p native digital cameras, so they're almost made for Blu-Ray. These should come out pretty damn impressively.

Of course, I'm not buying this so it doesn't matter to me, but I still think all you Prequel and Special Edition fans should finally the get the be-all end-all editions of these movies and never have to buy them again

I agree LFL should fix the color-timing on episodes 4-6 for the blu-ray release because on the dvd release they looks bad. Either way that won't stop me from buying the blu-ray release of all 6 star wars films. Day 1 buy for me.

A recent theatrical screening had the same colors. Don't expect different.

I'm hoping they'll at least revisit the lightsabers. Luke's green with the training droid, Vader's pinkish on the Death Star, etc. I would mind a seemlessly branched where Luke's RotJ is blue, but don't really expect it.

Ep 1 needs a thorough remaster, if not a full Special Edition. Replace the muppet with CGI, etc.

For all 6, I'd like extended cuts with the deleted scenes integrated back in.

Luke's RotJ saber is supposed to be green.

The one he got from Ben (Anakin's) is obviously supposed to be blue & the color is obviously off, especially with the training droid. However, the one he has in RotJ, he created himself at Ben's old hut on Tatooine, just prior to sending Artoo & Threepio to Jabba's. That one is green.

I re-watched the OT DVD's with a friend a couple of months back and while I grumbled about Luke's light sabre in the scene you mentioned he said "It's been out of use so long, maybe it needs to warm up." Totally cracked me up. The sabre effects in that scene are really bizarre..white, mint green, blue..all over the spetrum. If that isn't taken care of for the blu ray release I will be highly POed.

And yeah, Luke's ROTJ sabre being green is a major story point. Keep it as is. I remember upon first seeing that in the theater back in '83 thinking it was the coolest thing ever.

Luke's ROTJ saber was originally going to be blue, but they didn't like how it looked against the Tatooine sky, so made it green. That was more of a throwaway line, though. His green was always my favorite as a kid, but I think it would be interesting which is why I suggested a seemlessly branched version (just for the alt SFX), but really doubt that would happen.

Luke's inherited lightsaber from Anakin via Obi-wan shouldn't be green when he's first playing with the training droid on the way to Alderaan in ANH, though. That needs to be Ep1-3 quality blue throughout. For that matter, go through all 6 movies and make sure all lightsaber SFX are consistent.

I think I'm going to look a bit further into Star Wars lore and find out why some Jedi chose green & others blue. I know Mace's was purple because it was an electrum rather than crystal based saber. I was going to say it may have to do with whether a Jedi relies more on spiritual (what Qui-Gon refered to as the living force) or physical attributes for battle. Yoda was more Living Force, as was Qui-Gon, and theirs were green. Ben was more physical (I'm forgetting the actual name/term) as initially was Anakin and theirs were blue. Luke, of course had no choice as he received Anakin's saber. While it's difficult to determine from just RotJ, I believe Luke became more of a Living Force user as the books took over. Maybe that's why his was green? Maybe all Ben had laying around was a green crystal? But I thought one of the final steps to becoming a true Jedi was retrieving your own crystal during some kind of test? Anyway, food for thought.

Then again, in the books, Leia had a yellow lightsaber.

Edit: I looked (albiet briefly) into the question. It looks as though Jedi Guardians use blue & Consulars use green, while Sentinels use yellow (though no mention of Jedi class was ever made in the films that I can recall). If I remember correctly, this is how it worked in KotOR, but I'm not really sure it's the official answer. Added to that, Sith crystals are artificially enhanced, which gives them their color. The artificial enhancement gives the crystal either a red or orangish color, which the Sith in question has no control over. However, according to most of the sites I found, there is no official tie between blade color & class or even alignment as Dark Jedi continued to use blue, green & yellow sabers, though I believe this was for purposes of deception. Why Mace's is electrum based is beyond me for now.

Edit Edit: Okay, I looked into Mace's purple saber. If you watch the early AotC teasers, one of them calls Mace's saber an Electrum Lightsaber, which could/would explain the purple color. But I believe this came about as the result of the color rather than the other way around. One site says purple symbolizes a Jedi's complete mastery of the saber (purple=red+blue). This could be the case as even G.L. has stated that Mace was the most powerful Jedi with a saber in the entire saga. However I also believe this lore came about to explain the color rather than the other way around. The official G..L answer seems to be this... Mace's blade is purple because Samuel L. Jackson requested it so he could be identified in a big battle scene (I'm guessing the arena battle near the end of AotC). So, in this case the lore (whichever you chose to go with) came about simply because an actor wanted purple.

Clone Wars imo is some good Star Wars entertainment. I'm almost done with Season 1 on blu and pleasantly surprised at the quality. Only thing that sucks is no uncompressed audio, but the content is good.

Only thing better is the books.

I bought Star Wars: The Clone Wars on Blu ray and really liked it. It looked amazing in HD and the space battles where awesome. Now to get into Clone Wars TV series.

Are you asking whether or not we think sometime around mid-May 2011 an official announcement will be made on what the release date for the set will be?

Because I'm not sure if you noticed or not (and if you didn't, God help you), but the whole point of this thread existing is because there already was an official announcement that the Star Wars Saga is coming out on BD. George Lucas, himself, made at the last Star Wars Celebration convention. The OP of this thread has all of that information listed there. That came out back in mid-May of this year (2010).

I get the feeling that on an official "George Lucas-sanctioned" level, there is no real explanation for the differences in the color of sabers that the Jedi use (I could be wrong, but as you pointed out, it's not referenced in the movies, and I'm not specifically aware of it being mentioned in any other Star Wars 'lore' that Lucas, himself, has been directly involved in... though anyone feel free to correct me if I am wrong and you have info to the contrary).

For one thing, other than the simple fact that he made a new Lightsaber, no real reason (as far as the color choice goes) is ever explained for Luke having a green lightsaber instead of another blue one in Return of the Jedi. Granted, since at this point the Jedi were just shy of extinct, one could argue that any possible previous 'class' basis for the colors were rather moot, but none the less, it still raises questions.

Plus, the Jedi council members all had a mix of green and blue sabers with no real explanation as to why. I would figure that all of the members of the council would have the same color saber if there were meaning to it.

Not to knock the "Expanded Universe" (because frankly some of the EU stuff is better than some of the official "Lucas-sanctioned" stuff IMO), which seems to be wear most of your info likely originated from, but I take anything originating from there with a grain of salt in the sense that it may not fit into Lucas's ever changing "official" canon.

Speaking of Lightsaber colors, there's a fun little oddity in Episode II (which I wonder if it will be corrected when the BD versions come out). Jedi Council Member Ki-Adi-Mundi (the guy with the tall head who looks like one of the Coneheads, only his head got "pruned") has a blue lightsaber, and he has it throught the Genosis battle at the end. But there is this one very brief clip (it's only on screen for maybe a second or two) where he is fairly close up, and he suddenly has a green lightsaber. It's very quick, but if you catch it, there's no mistaking it.

Yup. IIRC they were all going to be blue, even Vader's. Luke's RotJ was going to be blue but wasn't showing up well against the blue sky on the sail barge, etc. And Sam Jackson just wanted to be different.

The in-story reasons are all after-the-fact, from different crystal types. As far as conehead's color changing, IIRC the in-universe explanation is that some Jedi exchange lightsabers with others now and then (ceremonial type thing).

What I can't understand on all these star wars petion sites to get the oot on blu-ray like originaltrilogy is why all the Lucas bashing? I mean come on he created star wars and people left and right think he is a lair or think he has a ego all directors have egos not just him. He is not in the wrong here but some star wars fans think he is and they have the opinion that the prequels and the special editions of the OT destroyed the series it did'nt. Sorry for the long rant but you get my point.

I think I've seen somewhere in one of the web featurettes during those days. It was Sam Jackson's idea for a purple lightsaber. I remember a conversation between them, something like this:

Sam: Can I have a purple lightsaber?

George: Mmm, you might get it.

Sam: Cool!

I wonder what would have happened if Samuel L. Jackson had asked for a plaid lightsaber.
