I'd love for this to get a 7.1 Audio treatment
[Show spoiler](like recent releases of Toy Story 3, The Expendables, etc.)
, but knowing Lucas & Lucasfilm with their tech., I can only Hope it's not just a generic 5.1 DTS-HD MA (even if that will prob. sound just fine.)

Besides the lowest price guarantee, it's really just a convenience, especially if you don't have any retail stores nearby. I'm not even sure if you're guaranteed a copy. You're guaranteed to get it at that price though. But if they have a stock shortage or something, I think it's first come, first serve.

That's because they're not. Pseudo-fans. Agree though that most will still buy'em all regardless of what they say here.

You essentially guarantee that you'll pay no more than $90.

Another Question: Once you pre-order, do you get billed right away, or when it ships?

Edit: Here's the article.... http://arstechnica.com/media/news/20...star-wars.ars/
Well, if you read the WHOLE article, yes, the original master is in pieces, but there are PLENTY of other copies (including the silver separation masters) which would be more than adequate for HD transfer if they didn't want to piece together the original version, would be very cheap to transfer, and would require little clean-up.

If you really want to read the whole story, check out http://secrethistoryofstarwars.com/savingstarwars.html , which is the site of the guy who was used as the source of the story you linked above. It goes into much more depth and detail of the situation.

It will happen someday. Evidence of this can be seen in the fact that Lucas is no longer calling them the "workprint" versions in a derogatory way, he's calling them the "classic" versions now. And also, it was said that they wouldn't be releasing the individual trilogies and just the big box set, which as we know now changed.

It might be a few years, but my guess is he'll attach new HD scans of the 2nd gen masters out there to the inevitable 3-D releases, which will probably come out one by one. Then he really wins - because I don't care anything about 3D, even for Star Wars (especially for Star Wars?), but I'd buy those things in a second if the original, "classic", unaltered films were on them as well.

since the DVD's featured Dolby Digital EX (6.1) sound, I really hope the bluray's will be encoded as such. (fingers crossed) Wasn't Lucas being a hard ass in not having any of the Star Wars films encoded in DTS sound for either the laserdisc or DVD editions, since Fox is exclusively DTS for it's bluray releases, guess he has to relent now.

Hey, 6.1 EX (DTS of course) I'll Gladly take over 5.1 -- Hell, maybe we'll get 7.1 after all...

Since FOX is pretty exclusive as you say with DTS (HD-MA), all I'M Saying is that it'd be kind of a letdown for this Set to be in anything other 6.1 or higher (EX, ES, 7.1, etc.). Just MY Opinion.

[Show spoiler](why, Yes. I Am Greedy!)

Lucas messes with the CGI and everyone throws a fit, but if he doesn't mess with the sound to provide 7.1, everyone gets upset.

Episodes IV-VI were originally presented in 35mm Dolby Optical (LCR mono surround) and in 70mm 6-track Dolby Baby Boom magnetic (L Le C Re R mono surround -- Le and Re were low frequency effects channels). So if you really want to see them as originally presented, you'd want a 4.1 soundtrack.

yet he allowed the sound for the DVD's to have a matrixed rear center of sound to be added - hmmmm, he pretty much altered that too. As well as the removal of sound at point, the descent into the Death Star trench as I recall.

Personally I hope he doesn't remix the movies for 7.1 sound

question: were the 70mm prints of Empire and Jedi have the five front spread or with split stereo surround?

Whos' throwing a fit? We're just having a DISCUSSION about what audio specs he might use & what some of us might like them to be.

Relax already. 4.1 soundtrack? Nobody said wanting to see them as originally presented (audio wise). That's someone reading between lines that are not there.

That's better than having your discrete surround channels reversed, a'la the Episode IV DVD.

I'm not much of an audiophile, but the only thing that bothered me on the DVD release was Han Solo's dialogue in A New Hope. Everything he said sounded kind of 'muffled', like what happens if you turn the treble all the way down.
