They definitely don't seem to be that heavy. When Jedi walk with them, when they use the force to "retrieve" them, when they handle them, it looks like they're light. Why wouldn't they be?

Heck, if they were that heavy, every time a saber fell to the ground, there would be a loud noise but there isn't.

Or is all the weight in the "light" when activated?

Edit: Just heard Lucas say in that YT video that it's only when the energy comes out of the saber..

lol, "very old man" Ben Kenobi? Only 17 years older than the master swordsman who fights like Superman!

Yes, indeed he said that. He said that Luke was inadequately trained because he had nobody to train with, ditto for Vader and Obi-wan, who additionally are old and handicapped.

So what if Lucas has done a little redacting? Nobody has to like it, but it's his privilege. I like his "complete saga" better than whatever he was going with in the 1970's. It does not logically follow that because he expanded his story over the years, he therefore made it suck. Fact of the matter is, he fixed inconsistencies and implausibilities; having a problem with that, is sheer, stubborn, blind nostalgia.

You are right. Then again, I agreed with you from the beginning... I am now going to sit back and wait for the internets to break....

Apparently, they showed Attack of the Clones in the UK recently, and it was the theatrical version, it makes me wonder if that's what will be on this set. (on the dvd the queen has some extra dialogue after Anakin's hilarious murder confession)

Well, if we lived in a world where slow-moving xenon produced light, then you'd be correct. Also pigs would fly, my derriere would produce cotton candy, and The Phantom Menace would be a timeless classic.

Awesome! Thanks for linking that! My word, fight choreography sure has improved.

So, it was Hamill who said 40-50lbs, and GL who said they "had some weight to them." Amazing how something like that goes to "Lucas said lightsabers weighed the same as a small car."

Almost as amazing as the way 'I'll concede if someone posts definitive info' can go to 'well, that's just Hamill's version...who knows what Lucas really said'.

Well, at least the internet won't be breaking anytime soon.

I always understood that the weight of a lighter was only in the hilt. The blade was weightless and that's one reason they were dangerous. A normal person could end up cutting something off because they can't keep track of where the blade is at all times. I read this somewhere but it was many many years ago and could have just been a post by some fan. It always made sense to me, because a lightsaber is pretty much plasma controlled and harnassed using the crystals and the force that resides in them and the Jedi who constructs it. Plasma is weightless I believe. I do know I read in a book that it is dangerous for a Jedi to construct his first saber because if he doesn't focus and harness the force properly and align the crystals right he can blow himself up when he activates it. Anyways that's just my two cents.

Han doesn't act like it's extremely heavy when he's cutting that tauntaun open, either.

Hmmmm...

He navigates an asteroid field like it's not even there, avoids a point-blank blaster shot while returining fire and handles a fifty pound light sabre like it's a flashlight...it's all so obvious now...

Han was a freaking clone!

He must not have made the memo until after the Obi-wan hut scene.

He is just holding it and moving it around slowly, not whizzing it around like a whiffleball bat in the PT, what part of that don't you understand?

When Anakin is twirling that saber behind his back, how come Kenobi doesn't just poke him in the eye with his? Or vice versa? Are they supposed to be fighting?

You said Lucas said that during the production of the original trilogy, like it was a quote from '77 or '80 or '83. Not a recent documentary, and not second hand from Mark Hamill.

Why don't you understand that Jedi have been trained from practically toddler stage to wield lightsabers? Did you miss that scene in Attack of the Clones with Yoda and the younglings?

I wonder why Lucas just didn't say, "The fights were below average because it was an older film back when choreography wasn't the greatest," because if the OT was made today, Darth, Ben, and Luke would be made of air just like everyone else in the PT...
