Interesting take on it. I took it to mean, "We're tired of hearing the complaints of those who want the Star Wars that isn't supposed to exist anymore."

I hope it means, "We're not saying yes but we're also not saying no."

Well, not really. The "No Comment" is more because Fox doesn't get a say one what is released. So they can't say yes or no.

Actually, he did.

At the announcement for these very Blu-rays - http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/14/g...u-ray-in-2011/. If you don't want to take their word for it, you can watch the video transcripts of the event yourself online when he was asked about the "Classic" editions (he's stopped calling them "Workprints").

That said, I think we'll see them - as a companion to each of the 3-D releases. It would be an extremely smart business move. You have people like me who don't care about 3-D and wouldn't buy them otherwise who would pick them up in a heartbeat for restored versions of the originals in full HD.

Chip pretty much nailed it but just in case, TOS wasn't edited on tape: it was film from start to finish, just like a "regular" motion picture.

TNG onwards changed things by filming the live action, then transferring to tape for editing and compositing. Even the models of the Enterprise and other ships were shot on film: those were also transferred to digital tape and then composited. Stuff like phasers and other animation were done in the computer at NTSC resolution though. The same deal for The X-Files, except most of their visual effects (FX) work was done on computer in standard def.

To have TNG and TXF in HD they would need to locate all the raw film, re-transfer it at HD resolution, re-edit every shot, and then redo the visual effects from scratch...with the exception of Industrial Light & Magic (who did most of the ship shots for the pilot that was reused for the first 2 seasons) the FX studios for TNG don't exist anymore and those film elements are likely lost forever. As you can see, it gets really complicated and really expensive fast.

We now return you to your SW thread where you can debate Astromech 'droid thruster warranties and saber weight.

Most people are going to buy whatever's released.
True, but that's why I think he's going to (and it would be brilliant to) attach them to individual Blu-ray releases of the 3-D versions. (And they will be exclusive to those, so when people buy the big box of 3-d ones they will still have a reason to own both releases).

Why it's so smart is that he will then get people like me to buy the 3-D versions even though we don't care about 3-D and probably won't even have the equipment to play them. Who are likely the same people who want the original versions (the purists).

It's win-win for everyone, plus it looks like another 6 hours of content in the press-release. Surely they are not going balls-out on the extras for this release like they say (I'm sure it will have tons, but he'll always save a bit more for later), but six hours of additional content adds that "value" they are always trying to add (i.e. the real reason we have digital copies and DVDs packed with "Nightmare On Elm Street").

I'm going to buy this release. I'm going to enjoy this release. But as much as I don't care about 3-D, I'd preorder those suckers today for $50/whack if they had full-HD restored versions of the original films. Bonus if they include branching of the original crawl with Star Wars itself.

My 2004 set came with the documentary and it was really good.

Bluyoda and Beast, stop acting like only a 'few' people want the OOT. The DVD's sold so well because 1) there was no choice and 2) its Star Wars. Most film lovers want the OOT

Having said that I prefer the SE myself as that was how I was introduces to Star Wars (with TPM coming 2 years later).

I do understand your frusteration and annoyance with the constant bashers. But please atleast put aside ignorance and accept that Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back should be restored to their original form for the sake of film history. And, because of that should be available in the highest quality. Those two films were responsible for a revolution in terms of how movies are made and what can be done on screen, Mr. Lucas shouldn't be ignoring that fact simple ad that.

Again, I love the SE even with Hayden. I am no hater.

I wouldn't mind if the Ewok movies were included; I loved those as a Youngling (despite the Gorax scarring me for life.)

I agree, I think it would be awesome if those ended up on the blu

Honestly, I still have the DVDs and enjoy them. They're great from a nostalgic point of view, and add onto the expanded Star Wars universe so I'd love to get them in high def And the Gorax was one of the most terrifying things I'd ever seen as a child....It haunted me for a long time

Did Lucas ever say that the old versions of the movies doesn't exist anymore? I thought I read that once a few years back(I could be wrong). I would have a hard time believing that they are gone forever.

My bet is that the releases this Sept are not going to be the final or definitive SW set. I think after the 3D versions of the movies hit theaters there will be a truly ultimate set down the road that would have the original theatrical cuts/special editions/and 3D versions of all the movies. That could have the potential to be huge set disc wise(dare I say 18-20 disc set?).

For whatever reason I have never been a huge Star Wars fan so I don't get overly concerned with much about these movies. Though I do understand the fans be miffed about not being able to get their hands on the theatrical cuts. I know I would be pissed if Peter Jackson released the LOTR set in 20+ years from now on the format of that age and I couldn't own the original theatrical cuts if he came out with a newer version with altered scenes.

I'm all for the director's releasing updated versions of their own films IF it's their call, but the originals should ALWAYS be available as well. My guess is that the original theatrical cuts still exist for Star WARS and that one day they will see the light of day in HD. I think they will hit BD someday as IMO Blu-ray is probably going to be the last physical media.

For all the Star Wars fans I really hope this happens eventually on BD.

The struggle for the Original versions to be restored and released reminds me of a small, but determined band of rebels trying to overthrow an empire.

Now if I could only remember where I saw this...

Most film lovers yes would want them. I would love to get them on Blu-ray, just like you.

However do you know what "most film lovers" translate to in business talk? Not a wholla lot of money to make out of it! Just because a few 100 people here and in other forums, let say even 5000 people claim they will only buy the OT, out of the millions of set Lucasfilms will be selling on Blu-ray for the special edition do you see this as making a huge difference for a business? Even if you want to raise it to 10000 it still is a very low number. To try and claim that millions of people will buy the OT only or double dip is a bit dillusional. The reality is that for most people out in the real world (not those of us who are into this hobby) movies are not a hobby, it's just something they might do on a Saturday night in order to relax. They don't care about directors cut or theatrical cut or this or that. Heck most people don't even understand OAR and you can find a good bunch of them here, so call film lovers. They don't care that once a long time ago in a glaxy far far away, Han shot first...that there was a different musical number...that so old actor was there instead of Hayden....they just don't give a crap. They probably don't even remember it in most cases. If me, you and all the others who do know different were to sat them down and explain it to them and show it to them, do you know what would happen? These people would look at us with a look in their eyes saying "what a bunch of nerds!!!!" and tell us to get a life. Most of them won't understand exactly how can all of this be very important because they are not film lovers and they won't care.

All this whining is more annoying than Ewoks...
Get over it! or at least wait until they release it (if at all) with the 3D versions.
Don't want to buy it? don't! but don't think there are "millions who demand the originals" because there aren't.

Yup. The toy was even released of Dooku with two lightsabers. It echos Anakin trying to use 2 against Dooku, but still outmatched, just as Dooku was outmatched by Yoda (the theatrical cut appears to be much more of a draw - yeah Dooku flees, but he isn't soundly beaten, either). Something about a super battle droid or two in those scenes, too.

Episode 2 also cut the fight between Obi-wan and Jango on Kamino. First Jango is using one blaster, which Obi-wan blocks easily, but then switches to two as Obi-wan closes, which puts alot more pressure on him. The theatrical has Obi-wan close that distance REALLY fast (skipping the single blaster attempts as Jango goes immediately to two blasters). Believe this is seen in one of the earlier trailers.

Yeah, IIRC it was something about the Jedi duping Dooku into thinking they're clumsier and weaker than they actually were, but then switching up their fighting styles to their 'real' effective forms.

Eh? Never heard about that one.
The line "Just because there are two of you, don't assume you have the advantage". can be seen/heard in the Episode 3 game.
