Default Visual Commentary

There will be no multiple versions of the movies on Blu-Ray - period! But there is still the strong possibility that a documentation of the changes will be featured in a Visual Commentary to the 6 movies for historic reasons. Would that satisfy the haters?

Nothing would satisfy them. Even if he did release the original versions, they'd just find something else to complain about.

See, now that is just rude. While I responded "no" to the question, many people WOULD BE satisfied if proper transfers of the UOT were made available.

So true! After all, he DID release the incomplete versions on DVD and the bickering hasn't stopped for one minute. Why should Lucas give in to some conservatists if it doesn't change their view of Star Wars one bit. They still would hate it. Sad... His concern aren't the "fans" but the integrity of his work - as it should be. The Movies Lucas is most satisfied with are the only ones I would want to watch!

Nope. Wouldn't be even close to satisfying them because the unaltered version would not be there. Yes, it would be King George admitting they exist, but it still would not be the actual films.

Listen, I like the special editons just fine and I have no hate for the PT. However, to put things in perspective, lets play Devil's Advocate:

What if George Lucas decided that The Phantom Menace (as it is now) would only be available on DVD in a nonanamorphic format and decided that a 'New Cut' would be closer to his original vision. This new cut would be the ONLY version he would sell on blu ray and all future formats. Let's say that this new cut has Anakin somehow kill Sebulba in the Pod Race. While it does not alter the story in any manner, it changes a key moment of a character showing he has a dark side already in his youth (I think it would be a welcome change...). Also Lucas decides he will add in a 'farting droid' whenever possible to the back ground of the film's proceedings. Let's throw in a new digital Yoda and 'improved' FX on a few battle droids for good measure. Oh, and let's alter Obi Wan's "NOOO!" when Qui Gon is killed to a more muted "WHY?!" as his "NOOO!" showed a lil too much emotion (i.e. "Alert my Star Destroyer to perpare for my arrival."). Would any of those changes bother you? Would not having TPM in its original cut on blu ray not bother you?

Just curious really.

No. I'd still have the DVD if I ever want to watch that older cut.

I love The Phantom Menace but I would always just want the most recent version of it because I know beyond a doubt that Lucas doesn't put in changes for changes sake or stuff that compromises his movies. Anakin showing such strong signs of the dark side as him killing Sebulba in the Pod Race would be a terrible idea. I'm glad that this change will never happen!

I don't, since it means my plan to watch all 6 movies in one day won't work. So I'll have to watch them as quickly as I can over Friday, Saturday and Sunday and then watch all 6 on Monday and possibly Tuesday as well.

I'm confused.

In one post you say Greedo shooting first changed NOTHING but here you just as adamantly say Lucas doesn't make changes for change's sake.

Which is it?

Was there a purpose to having Greedo shoot first or did Lucas just make that change for the hell of it?

Interesting. A few quick questions for you though:

Is the Sebulba being killed by Ananking change a "Greedo shooting first moment" for you? Do you see how such a minor change might make a few people upset? Yes, Greedo shoots first. But Han Solo shoots first throughout the rest of the series. In defense of the fictional Sebulba change, Anakin destoys the droid control ship at the end of TPM. Killing more flesh and blood characters than anyone else in the same film (entire Nemoidan crew) and in the rest of the PT he is always first to try and kill his enemies.

Additionally, I am not buying Lucas does not make changes for the sake of making changes agrument. Exactly WHAT does the probe droid being hit over the head by the worker droid in a ANH add to the film? Or the 8 rats running away from Mos Esley? Or Boba Fett nodding to the audience in the Jabba scense. I am curious why you think these additions were necessary if not to, oh.. I dunno, sell toys or something...

I mean zero disrespect btw.

He's already done that.

I think a lot of Directors would prefer their own cuts too but a lot of people still enjoy the theatrical editions as well as the DC.

Hell, I'd be happy if they just released an unaltered version of ANH.

I'm not crazy about a lot of the changes to Empire but I find them a lot less distracting. I would buy an original cut of Empire should it be made available but I'm not exactly clamoring for one.

And Jedi? Freaking leave it out completely for all I care

Jedi might be the worst film in the saga but it is necessary because it wraps up almost all the story lines and brings the story of Anakin Skywalker full circle. Not to mention you get to see the terror of the Emperor finally come to an end after all those years.

As much as I dislike Jedi (and boy, I do) the Luke/Vader/Palpatine showdown was quite well done.

Even Mark Hamill couldn't screw it up.

In fact, that showdown alone pretty much nudges it ahead of TPM in my mind.

The only thing I did not like about Jedi was the Ewoks. However, it was GREAT commentary that a big military machine can be defeated by natives whom know the terrian and slightly more primative weapons (I think it was commentary on the Vietnam War when Jedi was first released).

Other than that I think Return of the Jedi wraps up the series perfectly. All the bad guys are killed, the guy gets the girl, and our hero rides off into the sunset. Great ending.
