Now does this speak for or against further enhancements in the Blu-Ray editions?
He's out talking about how great 3D is, etc. etc..... it's really, in my eyes, nothing more than early-marketing for when he releases these films in 3D......

He's probably only CGI'ing Yoda for the 3D preparations because it's easier to convert over all of the CGI stuff.... He's just selling it as "Oh we saw Yoda in 3D, and it just 'works' "

He'll have to wait until he's exhausted the market on these most (soon to be released) recent versions, before he declares that "3D is the definitive way to watch Star Wars"

I still have my silver box set as well, but also have the individual releases (including that extra bonus disc I bought separately to match them).

I remember when I got the Individual OT releases (with the UOT bonus discs). I actually got them about 10 days before their official street date by chance.

I received a gift card for Blockbuster Video, and I never rent these days (nor did I at that time), so I went there to use the card up and I was just browsing the movies that they had for sale (both used and new). And for the most part, nothing was interesting me. But then, I quickly glanced and saw the individual Empire Strike Back release. I did a double take because at first I thought I was just seeing things, but there it was. And the other movies were behind it (they were in quasi-alphabetical order under Star Wars). They must have gotten them in stock and whoever put them out didn't realize what the street date should be.

I briefly debated as to whether or not to get them since Blockbuster tended to have higher prices than other stores on new DVDs and after the gift card I would still be paying out of pocket about what it would cost me 10 days later from any other retailer (and some retailers were having some exclusives with the movies), but I said the heck with it and got them! I didn't want to have to go back again later anyway to try and use the card.

I remember being worried that the person behind the counter would know that they weren't supposed to be out yet and not let me buy them, but nope, they didn't say anything, rang me up, and I was on my way!

I remember getting them home, popping them in to check them out, and being blown away by the fact that the original movie didn't even have the "Episode IV: A New Hope" wording in the opening crawl (to my knowledge, all previous home video releases that were otherwise the 'original versions' still had that in there... at least any that I had ever seen). Not that I would have been upset if it had included that (in fact, I think it would have been cool if that were to have been a seemless branching option, not that it matters much either way), but it was just kind of "extra" cool literally seeing Star Wars the way it actually was when it first hit theaters (which I didn't exist yet to actually see at the time).

Getting back to the issue of the silver vs. gold packaging... here's something weird that I noticed.... It appears that at some point there was a packaging mix up with some of the individual 2-disc versions of 'A New Hope' in which the silver cover from the box-set was used. Over the past year or two, I've seen this a few times in some local stores. Amongst the individual releases will be a couple of copies of ANH with the silver DVD cover from the set, but its individually shrink wrapped, and it has the gold colored sticker that is normally on the individual gold-packaged OT movies on the outside of it that states it includes the original theatrical versions (So, I'm assuming that's what it contained, but since I had no need to buy another copy, I never was able to confirm it one way or the other).

Typically there would still be a couple of copies of ANH in the correct gold individual packaging as well amongst the silver ones, so it must have been a limited factory error or something that got mixed in. And I've seen this at a couple of different stores (Wal-Mart, Target, etc). But it's been a while though now since the last time I've seen this. And this never seemed to happen with the other two OT movies (at least not that I've ever seen).

Alright so I check the last copy I received, it was number 124 April/May and there is no mention of those Blu-ray. I am guessing it will be on the June/July issue

Nothing much going on here ...
So, let´s start another discussion.

In Episode 5 Yoda tells Luke Skywalker that the cave on Dagobah is strong with the dark side. My thought is that this could be the lair of Darth Plaguis... you know, the Sith Lord who was the master of Darth Sidious. What do you think? And please, no Expended Universe!

Kinda hard to have a discussion about that since ANY answer would be concidered expanded universe since its not covered in the movies . However I do think that would be a nice link between PT and OT

I've waited for this for 11 years...I know people want the original versions only. But let me tell you. I want a directors cut with more scenes and effects...better effects than we've seen in the SE's.

I want the Luke biggs scene to be in the movie and all the deleted scenes to be PUT BACK INTO THE damn movie!! specially the scenes from ROTS.

I think the SE's are great and I have no complaints...love em all.

I actually like the look of CGI Jabba in TPM a lot. As critical as I am of the prequels (particularly Episode I), this was one thing that I liked a lot. When I saw it in the theater when it first came out in 1999, I was so happy with how awesome he looked, especially after the travesty that was the CGI Jabba from the 1997 Special Edition of ANH. I'm glad that they more or less used the TPM model in the 2004 version of ANH, though something still seems 'off' about how he looks there...

It may in part be in his coloring (he looks too dark with more green than he should have... that may be in part due to the overall poor job that they did in 'coloring correcting' the OT for the DVD release), and there's one point where he laughs and the animation on his mouth just doesn't look right to me.

But the TPM Jabba, as small of a part as he has in the movie, looks excellent.

CGI Yoda wasn't bad either in either of the two PT movies he was in, thought he does look better in Episode III (hopefully they tweek the EpII version of him for the Blu-Rays). He was a lot better than that horrible off-model-looking puppet Yoda from Episode I. And if they replace the Episode I Yoda with CGI (like they already did for at least one scene from EpI in that "chosen one" documentary on the EpIII DVD bonus disc), I would be fine with that.

I do NOT want Yoda in Eps 5 & 6 or Jabba from Ep 6 replaced with CGI, but I do think their CGI incarnations looked good in the prequels.

Despite my extremely 'conflicted' relationship with them, I do still want to get the newest versions of the OT and the PT on Blu-Ray. I just would like to have the UOT as well (and honestly, in a perfect world, I would actually also like the have the 1997 Theatrical Special Edition versions of the OT as well... crappy looking CGI Jabba and all. Despite the flaws, that re-release of the films was a major event that I would also like to see preserved).

Yeah, there are some OT changes that I don't like, and yeah, I do think that the PT could have and should have been MUCH better films, but despite their flaws, I still want to have them. Each of them do have their moments (even if in some cases they are few and far between). It would just be nice to the at least the original OT cuts as well.

I do hope at minimum that we get all of the theatrical trailers for the 1997 Special Editions that were included in the Widescreen VHS tapes. I remember seeing those in the theater, and I remember how cool it was when they were included with those tapes (this was before I had DVD, and I just loved the idea of having the trailer for the movie on the same tape as the movie). The ANH tape has the trailer for the entire SE Trilogy. The ESB tape had a trailer for ESB & ROTJ (which was shown in the theater in front of ANH), and the ROTJ tape had a trailer for just ROTJ (which was shown in the theater in front of ESB).

I was disapointed that the bonus disc from the 2004 DVD set only included one trailer, which was actually an earlier, slightly different cut of the trailer that was on the 1997 ANH VHS tape. It didn't even have the specific release dates for each film on the trailer on the DVD like it did with the trailer on the VHS Tape.

The 2004 DVD had the SE trailer, the one where an X-Wing flies out of a TV screen and mentions the February 14th date. But as you said just the trilogy trailer and not the individual SE ones.

It also has the teaser, launch and re-release trailers for each film. What's interesting is the different logos I always thought they'd change them for the SE's but they didn't.

The Empire.... trailer is fun as it's just artwork and there's a Revenge of the Jedi teaser as well.

I would love to have all the versions on Blu, as well. That was a big part of what made Blade Runner the still reigning champion of Blu for a single film.

Yeah, but that was an early version of the trailer and it was later revised (which is the version that is on the Widescreen 1997 SE VHS tape of ANH).

There's a few other little differences during it, but the release date of ANH changed, and it had specific release dates for Empire and Jedi.

The SE trailer on the 2004 bonus DVD says, "On February Fourteenth, 'Star Wars,' followed soon after by 'The Empire Strikes Back,' and then 'Return of the Jedi!' (Or something pretty close to that). Also at one point earlier in the trailer is says something like, "On President's Day weekend 1997...", which isn't in the later version.

The later revised trailer (which I remember seeing A LOT in the theater leading up to the rerelease of the movie) and which is on that 1997 VHS tape, it says, "On January Thirty-First, 'Star Wars,' On February Twenty-First, 'The Empire Strikes Back,' and then on March Seventh, 'Return of the Jedi!' There are a small handful of differences in some of the clips used in this version of the trailer as well.

(Of course it should be noted that ROTJ actually ended up getting pushed back a week and was released on March 14th, but the trailers were never updated for that.... even the other two trailers, the one for Empire & Jedi and the one for just Jedi, both state March 7th as the ROTJ date).

Oh yeah, I know those were on there. When I said just the one trailer in my previous post, I was referring to just the one SE trailer, as opposed to all of the SE trailers.

Those older trailers are all pretty cool from a nostalgic stand point (though IMO they come from an era from before people 'knew' how to cut trailers... they suffer from being long and drawn out, and not fast paced and fun like more modern trailers... they are just very 'dry' IMO) Part of why I am so focused on the SE trailers is mainly because I remember seeing them and they kind of resonated with me. I didn't exist when the original film came out in 1977, I was only a few months old when Empire came out, and I was only 3 when Jedi came out (apparently I saw this one in the theater, though don't really have any specific memories of it). So, needless to say, I don't have much memory of the advertising from that time.

All of that being said, I would love to get as extensive of a collection of the trailers, commerials, etc, from all of the releases of all of the movies as possible. We got a pretty solid collection of them for the PT movies on their bonus discs, so I hope we get some just as extensive for the OT.

A couple of them are YouTube but it would be nice to get them on the BD's. It was nice to see that crappy CGI Jabba in the SE trailer as well made me feel all nostalgic....

I think it is just your youth catching up with you, You were born later so advertising in the pre-MTV generation was generally not nearly as flashy. Movie trailers nowadays are more like music videos (fast cuts, loud, and almost assaulting) than they were back in the mid to late 70s.

I think chances are good that those old trailers will be on the blu ray bonus discs though. They were all included on the Star Wars Definitive Collection Laser Discs so I am thinking they will make an appearance here too. Can't remember if they were included on the DVDs (honestly, I didn't watch any of the Star Wars DVDs enough as I found the qaulity on them all to be pretty lacking, except ROTS looked good). I am pretty sure there will be a TON of bonus content on the OT, old trailers and all.

Heh. I made my own special features discs years ago from all the goodies across various laserdisc and VHS versions, not to mention several TV documentaries too (including that terrific one from the BBC about Phantom Menace). I've got the interviews Lucas did with Leonard Maltin from the 'Faces' laserdiscs, the featurettes & trailers from the SE laserdiscs, the 'Bridging the Saga' Episode II featurette from the re-release Japanese SE laserdisc and more.

Any UK members recall the Executor VHS set? Each film came with its respective documentary (Making of Star Wars, SPFX (Empire), Classic Creatures (Jedi)) and a boatload of trailers, plus 'From Star Wars to Jedi' and all of the little featurettes made for the Definitive laserdisc set. It's a treasure trove of Star Wars goodness which I've made damn sure to back up on DVD.

I was expecting something like this for those DVD releases back in 2004. these so much material that could have been used. hours and hours worth for each film!!!! I expected a shit load of retro docos as well.

You have put me in mind actually of something I taped off ITV and always saved. it was on around 1997ish time, just before the special editions came out at the cinema. it was around 1.5 hours long or something like that. just always remember it being really good!! I purposely saved it - all locked up in storage somewhere!!

and that set shown above you mentioned looks wicked!! remidns me of the Alien Trilogy boxset which was out years before. always wanted it but couldnt afford it. I dont remember that SW one at all though. it looks like from the second VHS digital remastered release from 1995 ??? I had already bought the 1994 single editions in widescreen and was quite happy with that at the time. that was a lesson learned of "things to come" I guess. the first attempt at "double dipping"???
