No, it was because a bra would show through the white dress which would look bad.

She's supposed to be an authoritative, principle-driven, battle-hardened warrior at this point; is any of that really served by stripping most of her clothes off?

You could say it was meant to demean the character. Leia is a princess, someone of great importance who Jabba caught. In order to show how powerful he is, they took this vip and made her a slave girl in that outfit. It was a sign that there is no one greater than Jabba and that people are only as important as he feels they are. It has been done before in history in various ways so if you want to think of it in terms of mythology, then Lucas did it for a reason.

Real reason: he needed to make up for that stupid hair in the original movie and threw the fanboys a bone, literally

Nicely said imdb_acc, I was a thirteen year old boy when RotJ came out, and I can tell you that I found her very attractive back then, and her kicking ass while dressed that way just made her even more attractive!

It's kinda an eerie parallel. My favorite bits?

The Imperials claiming that Kenobi's companions were killed also. And that Luke and Han use Leia as a human shield.

And how Vader deals with the vanishing of Obi-Wan's body. Since they want people to see the Jedi's as religious nutcases.

I am going to be happy with this star wars saga blu-ray box set no matter what and I know from reading the blogs and forums that people are jumping to conclusions about the box set and what was and what was not announced for the box set but in the end we all will enjoy the star wars saga on blu-ray disc. And as mention before if all the fixed from the 2004 OT SE dvd's are addressed like the color timing and the sound mix for episode 4 ANH that will make the set even better. We just can't rush to judgement on the blu-ray box set until it comes out in September and then we can judge for ourself's about the box set.

Well, Lucas has openly admitted that the concept of "The Force" was born from his own studies of various world religions, and his own attempts to find common threads between them all. He also borrowed very heavily from the writings of Joseph Campbell. Unfortunately, what ultimately resulted was the creation of an ambiguous, impersonal, vague "energy field", which somehow had a will of its own, though initially, we're never told how. Then, in the prequels, Lucas added the whole "midichlorian" and "symbiosis" concepts, which just muddled the whole thing even further. Personally, I think it worked much better in the OT, before Lucas felt he had to go all "super-scifi-mystic" with it.

Well, I just mean how Palpatine ran a campaign of disinformation after rising to power.

So that people like Han Solo see the Force as a "Hokey Religion".

I have some thoughts on this:

1) If you were to watch the movies in Episode order (as I showed them to my girlfriend), then hearing about midichlorians in the OT would have become redundant, as it's already discussed in the prequels. There's no need for us to have to listen to it all again.

2) It's entirely possible that over the 20 years Obi-Wan was in retreat on Tatooine he learned something about the Force that changed his belief about it. Many, many people change their beliefs during the course of their lives. Perhaps Obi-Wan came to believe that midichlorians, while existing in the physical body, had very little to do with a person's ability to use the Force. And lastly...

3) At the end of the day, knowledge of midichlorians makes no difference to Luke. Just like him being too old to start training makes no difference. To Obi-Wan, Luke is their last hope at destroying Vader. Obi-Wan's not going to hinge his last hope on Luke's midichlorian count (or Luke's knowledge of midichlorians) any more than he does Luke's age.

I don't think that was at all unfortunate. Quite the opposite - the force worked both as a plot device and as a cultural phenomenon precisely because it was ambiguous and ill-defined.

The problem with midichlorians wasn't that they muddled things...again, quite the opposite. Midichlorians demystified and made mundane something many people would have prefered remain mysterious and mystical.

Exactly. There's no reason for Obi-Wan or Yoda to explain them to Luke at all.
Especially given he's a big dumb blonde from the outer rim. Best to dumb it down for him.

Besides, the screening process of the prequels were simply the way of Jedis to find the best possible candidates as early as possible. Before they developed serious attachment. It indicated their potential, but it didn't mean that they would prove to be the best students or eventual Jedis.

Only if you view them to actually BE the force. Which is stated right in the movies, that they're not.

Have they said anything about the quality of this release or whether or not they've fixed the problems with picture and audio?

Still not sure about buying this.

I agree. The fact that the Force was vague helped make it more interesting. In all likelihood, Lucas most likely never thought of "midichlorians" back when he made the OT, like many other details of the prequels, in my opinion. I wish he had left that detail out of the prequels, too. Luke probably never heard of midichlorians in the OT because that storyline and idea didn't exist back then, not coming about until he wrote Episode I.

Yes Joseph Campbell wrote a great book entitled A Hero With A Thousand Faces. The book is worth a read for those that are interested.

And he did muddle things up quite well with the midchlorian "theory".
