Not for certain, but pictures of the back of a european release indicated that was region free, and the assumption is that as the Alien boxset was and both come from Fox, this will be too.

You quoted that tiny snippet of my post, did you even read the rest?

That is exactly what I was saying. I'd rather get a ton of new extras, than a handful of new featurettes and mostly recycled material from older releases.

Just hang onto the DVDs.

Hard to argue with that.

For me personally, I wish the set still included everything from the DVD set as I don't like holding onto DVDs when getting the BD version. However, this issue has always been hit & miss with the studios.

I can definitely see why people would want to get rid of the DVDs (maybe sell them to get $15-20 for the blu-ray set), but seeing how there have been changes made for the blu-ray, that means that the transfers will be different from the DVD verison, and as a completist, I cannot let go of any of the DVDs for this reason (especially not Phantom Menace)

I can definitely see that. The studio might also be thinking since the Star Wars fan group is so large, there are many completists who would want the DVDs anyway....especially ones who wants the Empire documentary, so no point in including it. I can see it both ways really.
