It's an ethical issue, not a legal one. Sure, they physically belong to him, but when you start screwing around with film history (and hardly some minor footnote), you're on shaky ground.

If Orson Welles' last act were to create new colourized prints of Citizen Kane and destroy all B&W ones, should he have been allowed? Why complain? We've got "the classic version" on VHS and SD DVD?

Look, all of this antipathy is because of two simple facts: Lucas refuses to release some of the most important films in history; there are plenty of people out there who are perfectly willing to champion his indefensible argument. "Well, they're his movies -- he can do what he wants. If you don't like it, don't buy them. You're not a true fan," etc. It's childish in the extreme, even more childish than my inability to simply ignore such nonsense when I visit this board.

Most of us who aren't drinking the Kool-Aid are quick to point out that these objections would disappear if both versions were allowed to coexist (with the originals given appropriate restoration). This is called "being reasonable".

Anyone consider that "Empire of Dreams" and "From Stars Wars to Jedi" are possibly being held off for a Classic Edition release down the road?

As I will state again, a whether this is a 2K or 4K scan is completely irrelevant for the purposes of a home theater release. Try reading this interview with a man who has probably forgotten more about cinematography:

In fact, everything talking about 4K belies the fact that most of the theater installations around the world are basically going at 2K. I mean the only commercial 4K digital cinema projector that I am aware of is the Sony 4K projector. But the bulk of theatrical installations around the world are the Texas Instruments DLP. And its maximum resolution is 2048x1080. I mean, let's face it. The difference between 1920 and 2048 is 6%. Believe me, you cannot see a 6% difference. Six percent is irrelevant.

Besides, when we talk about scanning film to get 4K -- we don't, really. We typically scan perf to perf, but the actual Academy Aperture is 3456 pixels, which is quite a bit less than 4K. When you scan film at 2K, you're often just scanning 1728 across the Academy Aperture. Just to make things a little more complicated!

So these are all high definition television projectors going into theaters whether you like it or not. Slightly better color gamut, but they are all basically paying lip service to the idea that it's not HD.

Its a horrible ratio anyway, 2048/1920. You want to avoid these horrible little small ratio numbers because a digital filter to scale 10920 to 2048 is difficult, and you probably lose more in the filter than you can gain by having a few more pixels.

In todays money, the prequels were made in almost a shoe string budget when you compare them to some of the stuff going on in Hollywood with most movies having budgets well over $200 million. Lucasfilm is very good at making sure they get the best return for the money they spend, they sure are not throwing money away compared to other studios.

I am sure they have done the same thing for the restoration of the movies for Blu-ray release, trying to get the most return.

the best way to even compare the expenses for a movie made in '77, '80 and '83 is to use an inflation calculator....

in 1977 11M was equivalent to a little over 41M
in 1980 32M was equivalent to almost 87M
in 1983 32.5M was equivalent to almost 74M

between 80 and 83 the dollar lost a lot of value but would still be quite a bit in todays money...

Yeah, and ethically these films are still his property. While I support your passion over this issue the fact remains that even if Welles had decided to colorize Citizen Kane that is ultimately his choice as the creative force behind the picture. Now that is a completely separate issue from the studio going and making said changes, even though they technically own the film they were not the artistic driving force behind it. In the end it is ultimately Lucas' decision, and if you don't like the changes just vote with your wallet.

did population increase that much between 80 and 83?....they put half a mil more into ROTJ than they did ESB and the calculator shows that the purchasing power was 13M less than the 2nd movie....

but what does population have to do with what was spent on the movie?...I was showing the value of the dollar to show that there wasn't THAT much more money spent on the newer movies than there was in ESB and ROTJ...

Probably because it is a Fox release. Fox has been using DTS-MA since day 1 on their blu's

I certainly wouldn't want to see that as Kane is my #2 favorite film of all time, and is perfect the way it is. But again if Welles, while still alive, decided he wanted to colorize Kane I would not be happy, but in the end it's up to him.

I certainly would not purchase a copy of Kane, but again it would be his call.

It's actually possible for Empire of Dreams, From Star Wars to Jedi and the Holiday Special to all show up as Easter Eggs on Discs 7 and 8. D7 is listed as a BD-50 yet it only contains around 4 hours of content (not including the fly-thrus and stills and video archives). D8 is listed as a BD-25 and contains around 3 hours of content (not including the fly-thrus and stills and video archives).

Adding EoD and HS to D7 would make it around 8 hours (BD-50).
Adding FSWtJ to D8 would make it around 4 hours (BD-25).
