Vader's hue was always a sort of magenta more than it was red. I mean Darth Maul's saber wasn't really red either when you go back and look at Menace.

I understand of course what you mean. I hope for you then that Lucas will release the unaltered original trilogy versions with the next blu-ray release of the seperate movies (like the 2006 DVDs, of course those OT movies were not anamorphic). For me, and many other fans, I don't think that this is necessary.

But I have a question for you and many posters on this forum, when you say "unaltered", do you mean without restoration? I think many posters here have a different definition of "unaltered"... don't you think so?

The originals actually look excellent on these Blu-rays. I have looked through A New Hope full BD and the PQ is overall very good. It looks just as good as some of the best transfers of anamorphic films from the same era (ie. Wrath of Khan) - the BD really makes the photography look great. Detail is great. No DNR. Yes there is some Lowry grain crap but it's not terribly noticeable (those with massive screens may disagree).

A 4K rescan would have made them look slightly better but they still look very respectable. The CGI Jabba still looks as fake as ever though and the HD makes it pretty obvious.

Anybody else get the feeling that this is the last time that we will se SW on BD in 2D?
Lucas will restore the SW for 3D and then that will be the version we will see from then on.

I'll be OK with that... once glasses-free 3DTV's are the norm

Besides there will always be these 2D BD's.... BD may have 10-15 years left in it yet easily, since the consumer demand for anything 'better' than Full HD just isn't there.

Shouldn't be a problem considering you can also watch 3D Blu Rays in 2D.

Much has been made of this but I don't reallly think there are too many variations on what people mean by unaltered.

You have your purists (including me, fwiw) who think restoration of a theatrical release should be limited to returning aged or damaged source elements as close to their original state as possible.

Then there's the (fairly sizable) group that basically says do all the regular restoration stuff and while you're at it, clean up the effects, get rid of some wires we shouldn't see and maybe address a few errors.

There are also some people who want updated this, enhanced that but don't want any content changes. I don't really consider them in the 'unaltered' camp but many of them would likely disagree.

Obviously there are individual variations but I don't think it's nearly as 'all over the place' as it sometimes appears.

Hmm so why does Captain America BD have a non 3D version and a 3D version?

Why don't people think that he's already restored the films for 3D already? I mean, Episode I's already done. It will probably be exactly as it is on the Blu Ray.

This holding out hope that he'll restore the films one more time for 3D is folly. Ladies and gentlemen, for Star Wars, these Blu Rays are it. This is what we'll see in 3D over the next few 6 years.

I think some people need to come to terms with that.

And if you don't like the new versions, stick with the 2006 DVDs or the LD and VHS releases for that matter...

And in the end they are George Lucas' movies.. Yeah yeah we fans made these movies a success, I know! ;-)

So stop being so negative and enjoy the versions of the movies you like.
I'm sorry but that doesn't seem to make sense. That's like saying I'm not being a true Christian because I changed churches after discovering that my reverend was a child molester... and also ruined the climax of the entire Star Wars saga by inserting multiple awkward NOOOOOOOs to its iconic villain.

Yeah, I doubt THAT many people will see The Phantom Menace in 3D. Its CGI will look dated and the movie's just not that good...
But after 3-6 years, they'd get to see another special edition of the original trilogy with new edits, new sfx, new lines, new sound effects, new actors' faces, etc. Han not shooting first in 3D... also I'm not sure 1977 film stock will look very good up-converted to 3D. A lot of 2011 film stock looks pretty awful digitally up-converted to 3D.

You got a point there, it can be misinterpreted. When i say unaltered i mean the new additions of CGI and sound elements from 1997 onwards.

I think most of us here would be happy with the quality of the current video material sans those newly added elements.

I'm sticking to this because in the subject of restoration there are people who prefer only the removal of the film damage, maybe some color correction and there are those who would go all the way and love to see what can be achieved with for example the removal of noticeable matte elements. Seeing what an active community Star Wars has, even this would spark hot debates from fans, previously united under the Give us the UOT! banner.

George Lucas stated that this would be a huge financial undertaking. I 'm not one of those fans who are searching his pocket with both hands, but seeing the amount of cash that has been and will be spent on these three films alone from consumers around the world... it's hard to believe that he can't do it.

That video is...all good news!

The colors look much more natural (and like a movie from the 1980s) than the cool, overly slick look of the 2004 DVDs. As someone else noted, they also redid the terrible update of the Emperor so that he no longer looks like he's flopped on his couch after a long day at Burger King. I would prefer unaltered Star Wars, but if I have to have the altered versions, those seem to be closer to a happy medium.

EDIT: Herp-da-derp. I get it.

So there will always be a bunch of "SW fans" that cannot be satisfied, no matter what George Lucas does. That's my conclusion ;-)

Yes. In the trailer you will also notice he changed the shot of the Rebels leaving Hoth, one of the escort X-wings is destroyed when they try to break to pass the blockade with the first transport etc.

So it's not a UOT

I get what you mean, sorry but that comparisson...?! Common... these are "movies"...

Regarding the "NOOOOO" critic (which I think has been blown out of proportion by many "SW fans"), I read somewhere (sorry forgot the source) that Lucas always intended it to be there but the dialogue track was not usable... Now the big question is of course, is it true or is it a lie? ;-)
