From what I've read regarding the 2004 transfers these blu-rays are based on, both types of processing were used, since Lucas wanted more sharpness than those old 'scope lenses gave him, and the Lowry people wanted to match grain levels between all the negatives/opticals/dupes/whatever. If the image looks natural, it's because they used the tools rather than abused them... some studios would do well to learn the distinction

As far as grain goes, it's kind of like pictures printed in a magazine or something... if you look close enough, you'll start to see the image is just bunch of color dots (or in this case, clouds of dye particles).

Man I don't know what to think. The color certainly looks better than the DVD release, but the overall quality of the saber effect is pretty bad. There is just too much flicker and jittering in it. Especially around the hilt. Lucasfilm really needs to go back to the original camera negative before any effects were added and start fresh with the saber from there. However, if the original camera negative is gone or not in a useable condition I can see it being quite difficult to get a satisfactory looking saber effect.

Adywan was right. Other than sort of fixing the color of that infamous shot where everyone saw the teal lightsaber in 2004, the rest of the lightsaber shots are still white with a light green glow. Geez.

I went back and popped in my 2006 UOT DVD and my dvd-r of my '97 LD and the saber in those all have an oversized white core with a hint of blue glow in some shots, blue showing stronger in some shots than others. Never, ever green like the 2004's and 2011's. Not even comparable in color.

If they're going to bother working on this scene, you'd think they'd actually make it right.

Pains me to say it but I'll still be buying the Blu-Ray release in spite of George Lucas's silly changes to the films.

Just recently realized the Star Wars Celebration convention is coming back to Orlando in 2012. Can't wait till next year! I went to the convention in 2010 and it was awesome.

I don't know. His saber still looks mostly green (or cyan) during most of the scene to me. I'm not really bothered by it, though. Honestly, I never even noticed it on my DVD until I read about it online. Even then, I thought the people seeing it were crazy until I checked my DVD.

nmycon, how does the scene with R2 behind the rock look in motion? It looks good enough when I see the stills, but does it still seem believeable in motion?

There isn't really any motion. They are just static shots with R2 turning his "dome." Not really any camera movement, so it looks fine.

Although, even from the screens, you can tell that the CGI rocks are slightly pixelated and stand out somewhat against the original rocks, which are very sharp and detailed.

Well, then they would have to re-do EVERY digital effect they have re-done so far. I doubt Lucas wants to put that much time into it.

That's really the crux of the biscuit, right there for me. I've seen pictures posted on here, and then less than five minutes later, someone else has dowloaded that picture, and completely recolored it to make it correct, or even changed it to a completely different image, like back when everyone was playing around with Vader's saber from that iconic scene between Luke and him from TESB at Cloud City. One minute the saber was pink, and then red, and then a candy cane, and then a sucker, all within a few minutes. If homestyle nerds like that can change things like that in a minute or two, why can't ILM do it in several years?

I almost think George does this on purpose to leave the door open for future corrections/profits. When I first bought the DVDs, I wondered why he didn't fix the garbage mattes, now I think I know why.

From my poor memory they have always looked "jittery" and flickerd, pretty sure thats the way it was ment to look at the time. If you fixed that, then you would ahve people complaining that the saber is supposed to flicker in that scene and why did he change it, my childhood is dead becasue of it blah blah blah

From what I have read this is sort of a Frankenstien master, spliced from a few different sources, due to the poor shape of the original negative...So the picture may fluctuate becasue of this, I mean lets face it this is the best we have seen the OT and its going to bring out things that were easily hidden by the SD DVDs, LDs, and Videotapes.......I am not expeciting miracles at all.......

Again, I wasn't referring to just one particular change, but instead the whole of them.

I have a question about the 2004 DVDs: Was there a mention of the date, such as people who worked on the 2004 DVDs?

On the leaked rip, there is only a mention of copyright 1997 at the end of the credits, which made me wonder why this hasnt been updated. Or is it supposed to hide that they have been tweaked?

It has a "Special Edition Credits" section, but the copyright date has been 1997 since the 1997 SE. Essentially, the 1997 versions have been released three times, each time with very minor updates. Too minor for Lucasarts to consider them different versions of the films, hence the same copyright date.

Yeah, I don't think the OT's end credits have been completely updated since 1983. They added some "restoration credits", but otherwise everything remains the same, right down to Denis Lawson's name being misspelled.

Sure, that makes sense.

Personally, I dont think the leaked rip is totally legit. One scene that should have been fixed is on the Shuttle as they approach Endor, you can see Endor through Han`s head, which would have taken a few minutes to correct. I thought that scene was pretty poor quality on the rip and hope it was just a compression thing.

I hope one day there will be technology advanced enough to correct that spelling.
