You gotta love the half-assed effort that this set seems to be getting.

George is twice the man now that he was in the 70's. Literally.

I wouldn't even bother anymore, if i were you. I gave up a few 1000 posts back. There's no convincing these brainwashed idiots of any sensible logic, or the fact that you can be a huge star wars fan and not love every single thing Lucas puts out.

Any kind of degrain process needs two things:
1) Figure out which pixels are grain/noise
2) Figure out what colour they should be if the grain/noise wasn't there

And they do that with various algorithms that work within the frame (spatially) and also by looking forward and backwards to different frames (temporally).

Temporal de-grain especially is a very risky thing to do. If you overdo it or your algorithms suck then you can end up with smeary artifacts.

I don't know if that is specifically the problem with Lowry's process but certainly many people have noticed weird floaty grain patterns in some of his restorations. I notice it in ANH - there are panning camera shots where the grain pattern is fixed in space for whole seconds at a time.

It doesnt help when you are doing all this process at the same resolution as the final presentation. If you scan at 1080p then each pixel is 18 microns wide, but what if your pieces of dust/grain are only half that? You have to remove the whole pixel, it is a very ham-fisted approach. That's why most high-profile restorations are done at 4k or 8k.
Very good info. Thanks for posting it! That is some good info for some posters on this forum......

Sometimes I wish Irvin Kershner had made the Prequels.

Seriously!

BTW: Irvin made ESB -- for those padawans out there!

Start with ANH and ESB. After the shocking Darth Vader reveal in ESB, we go into a flashback trilogy exploring his background. We finally conclude with RotJ, which is the proper film to wrap up the entire Skywalker saga.
Interesting. I think that's how I'm going to watch them when I get my set next Friday. Thanks for the tip!

True, but it is fun to make them realize how asinine their comments are. I know the ones wearing George Lucas (Tinker-bell) kneepads are pretty prominent in here.

Some one needs to say it...

If you REALLY loved Star Wars you would have never wanted it changed.

I was in Walmart this morning and they were playing an ad for the Saga set on all their HDTVs. It was the scene of Obi-Wan and Anakin's battle. It looked awesome. I'm really excited to get it now.

Here is a fun Quiz Slide I made for our Home Theater PS3 Pre-show.

Care to guess the answer?

It works for everybody. For the new viewer, it preserves (almost) all the plot twists in the OT that would otherwise be ruined by the PT. It also gets the 2 oldest films out of the way early, so that the dated special effects don't get overshadowed later on. For the repeat viewer, they benefit by having the 4 strongest films bookend the 2 weakest films. It's always best to start and finish strong.
This is great! I will definitely watch it this way from now on. I wish they would revamp the whole saga to change it this way, and cut back and forth between the 2 trilogies (sort of like The Godfather does). Great job Hipster!
