Non sci-fi/SW geeks. Both this chic I knew and her friend thought that Jake Lloyd in Ep 1 was Luke as a younger kid. Non-fanatics should definitely watch them I,II,III,IV,V,VI. The only reason to watch them in release order is nostalgia.

BUT... at least half his fan base did like them according to review aggregates and these very forums we enjoy. Lucas used to enjoy a much better reputation. In that sense, The Prequels were a failure. The original movies had become such a cultural touchstone that it was easy to forget the 2 and 3 star reviews they got when they first came out.

The prequels didn't exactly fail, the 3 of them pulled in about 1 billion in theater ticket sales and who knows how much with vhs and dvd sales.

They disappointed a lot of fans as they did not capture lightning in the bottle the way the OT did, but, aside from the difficult to interpret political plotting script included in AOTC, they were, in my opinion pretty good films.

Imho, PM and ROTS were both first rate, and better movies than ROTJ. Most of the same people who dislike the PT are the same ones with the most issues about GL's mercurial tinkering with the OT.

I don't like the changes either, but this is classic cinema with the best pq we are likely to get for home viewing, so I am all in.

Amidala said it in Ep 1 that it was clear that the Republic no longer functioned. Others agreed. The Sith were behind exasperating the inefficiencies in the Republic, as well as fanning resentments and pulling strings as showed by the meetings holo Darth Sidious had with the leaders of the Trade Federation, Techno Union, etc and why they were behind the invasion of Naboo to begin with.

This is usually how it works with new releases and I have never had problems. But with the anticipation of this set, I am fighting the panic that is slowly creeping in...
Friend of mine says his shipped. Mine hasn't yet

I just checked, and mine switched to "Preparing to Ship" (whatever that means), but it has not shipped yet. I wouldn't worry. I'm sure you'll get a notice tomorrow that it shipped and you'll be enjoying it Friday sometime.

That's why I asked Thank you! I have read most of this thread but can not recall you saying anything in favor of the PT til now.

I don't think Lucas is infallible - the same way I don't think Christopher Nolan or Tolkien are infallible. I don't even assume that the whole story was mapped out from day one. That's not important to me.

For good balance here are things I'm not really fond of in the movies: Han and Lando are a little underused in RotJ, too many muppets in RotJ, the music scene in Jabbas palace could be more subtle, C-3POs antics in the droid factory and the arena in AotC are a little over the top, I would like the insertion of an Alderaan scene in ANH, JarJar is almost entirely missing from Episode 2 and 3, Him proposing emergency powers to Palpatine was out of place (should have been Bail Organa)...

Anyone starting with Episode I is going to think lightsabers are called "laserswords". And that just makes me sad.

Temple of Doom, Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Last Crusade?

Well, "Temple of Doom" does take place before "Raiders" in terms of chronology, which is probably why the DVD for "Raiders" had the "Indiana Jones" title added to it. "Last Crusade" takes place shortly after "Raiders", if I recall correctly, and then there's "Crystal Skull", which is set about 20 years later.

Nah, the term "lightsaber" has become so far ingrained into pop culture, I don't think it would be ignored for too long. Count Dooku mentions "lightsaber" in Episode II, so the kids would be confused for one film at the most.

Should I watch the opening scene of Last Crusade first before I watch Temple of Doom? Technically that scene takes place first chronologically.

A bigger flaw with Episode I being viewed as the first film is that it features Yoda... they refer to Yoda... but nothing ever indicates that the little green guy with the ears IS Yoda. He's never properly introduced.

As I said earlier, even with little quirks like that I prefer the 1-6 order but I'm not really opposed to 4-3.

In all this discussion no one has got it right for newbies it goes 4,5,6,Spaceballs.1,2,3
if you know the story it goes 1,2,3,Spaceballs,4,5,6

Some alternate ideas Odd numbers first like 1,3,5,2,4,6 really the combinations are endless

try watching them reverse order then after each episode watch Rocky Horror hell watch The Passion of The Christ in between trilogies

The only limit to enjoying these films is your imagination .

Actually, I never cared for that show very much...and to be honest, I'm not a big fan of the franchise in general, either (I probably hate snakes more than he does). The only one I saw in theaters was "Crystal Skull", and that was mostly from curiosity. I did like the NES game based on "Last Crusade", though.

Lucas has a tendency to let audience osmosis take over rather than introducing things like that. My mother could tell you what an Ewok is... but the term is never used in the film.

Which is odd, that he'd let so much go by without any real introduction, and then have such painful expository dialog in the prequels...

This is the only order that makes any sense:

Attack of the Clones
The Empire Strikes Back
A New Hope
The Phantom Menace
Return of the Jedi
Revenge of the Sith

Can anyone figure out the significance?
