I honestly think the DNR scrubbing that Episode I got was done very delicately. Clearly, he's trying to mimic the look of Episodes II and III with the use of DNR. But, besides the obvious uptick in clarity, there's a hell of a lot of detail in that transfer.

Episode I, in this version, looks really good. Now, I don't have a 65". I might feel differently when I upgrade my television in a few years but I doubt it.

Episode I just looks good. Episode II is the one where you notice just how great that DVD was because the uptick in clarity is not as significant.

On Episode III, there's a major jump in clarity and detail. It's astounding...

As for the Originals, I'd give all them 4.5, in terms of picture quality. I just think, even with a few flaws here and there, look damn good.

It's no even the writing. A great actress like her can turn he stupidest dialogue into something special, but it's the director's job to bring that performance out of her and not just be satisfied with the first half decent take. I guarantee you that the exact same scripts with the exact same actors would have turned into much better movies had a better director taken the helm.

Everything is wrong with that voice. His high-pitched screaming all the time causes me physical pain. He's only tolerable in the few scenes when he talks somewhat normally... or when you have permanently lost all the higher frequencies of your hearing for some reason.

As noted, it's there. There is an alternate / deleted extended scene where he doesn't cause the argument goes on longer and Leia gets the last word, but that's on the bonus disc

I would really like the Wampa attack scenes integrated in. Watching the Wampa grab that Snowtrooper was hilarious, too as well as the poor Rebels getting mauled by them.

Episode 1 look far better than the original DVD release. Spots though are clearly DNR'd, enough to make it look very soft. You can say that the detail and clarity is "astounding" but it would have been even "more astounding" if the DNR knob wasn't turned up so much. Some of the crowd scenes do show an AMAZING amount of detail. Which I just guess they didn't DNR them. Now that I think about it the majority of the "wow" scenes were outside, so less grain would have been present, they might have not used any DNR at all, which would explain a lot.

I also noticed that some of the "extra added scenes" for the original dvd were EXTREMELY soft. I wonder if they were rendered at 480p? I would like to see a screen cap of those to see the difference. The Clegg Holdfast "introduction" was the one that I noticed looked very soft.

I would rate it a solid 7/10. Which isn't really good for a 12 year old movie.

I would rate the audio at a solid 8/10. It appears that the bass in the sound effects was boosted and this tends to make the music sound thin at times. Not constantly, but I did notice it for the beginning of the PodRace. Also, I thought that the sound effects were rather "edgy and harsh" at times (e.g. Amidala's engine noise).

I agree - there is a little scrub but its nowhere near as bad as some titles have. Actually, a little noise reduction is a GOOD thing IMO even though that comment will send the video gurus with their 500 inch screens into a tizzy

Doing EP2 tonight....cant wait!

BDs have a semi-transparent reflective material it's just located in a different part of the disc. In terms of DVDs, the reflective material is toward the middle of the disc so it's also pretty protected. However, unlike CDs and BDs which are manufactured to have one solid substrate, DVDs use two ~0.6mm substrates which are then glued together. This is where the term disc rot has come into play with DVD. If that glue layer drys up or becomes brittle and breaks up then the reflective material can be exposed to the air and become oxidized rendering the disc inoperable.

Can you explain when that is a good thing? Removing any grain removes detail, that is a fact.

Maybe artistic intent? I got it....

Quick question...

In the scene at the beginning of Episode I when the destroyer droids roll up on Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan, the 2 Jedi dart off with the quickness of The Flash. Have they always done that or is that a tweak made for the blu? I haven't seen Phantom Menace since vhs so maybe I just never noticed...

Yes, they use force speed. The BD version has a redone effect from the original cut, which imo looked like a frame was missing.

Yeah, that's been part of the film since its original release. Fans have dubbed it "Force Speed", which is ironically similar to the term "Speed Force", used in DC Comics.

Well, it is artistic intent with what Lucas wanted for the image of Episode I. Again, if you watch the Prequels in one sitting, you can see why he did the work on Episode I the way he did.

If he'd left the grain alone, did a 4 or 6k restoration of Episode I and left it alone, the Prequels would look really odd together.

It is sort of a negative aspect of going digital too early with Episode II.

God, how I wished the Red One was available for the Prequels....

Recieved my set yesterday from Amazon (First time I have actually paid for faster shipping ). Popped in ANH (I'm going with IV-V-I-II-III-VI) and was amazed! I liked all the little details that were now noticable. For the most part, the colors seem better, though there were still a few points that were off (Luke's lightsaber was a blue/green in some scenes as opposed to just blue). Can't wait for Empire (most likely tonight)

I am trying to play New Hope and the video on screen is going insane, it will basically play perfect for 5-10 minutes and then bam all kinds of video distortions. Is anyone else getting this? Do we have a new Saving Private Ryan on our hands? Or am I just unlucky and bought a set with a bad disc. I have not tried the other discs yet, but I will post back when I do. However if anyone is having trouble and are using a HTPC or a player please respond.
Yup, I'm on my second set of SW BDs. Still having the same issue. Tried it on 2 players with the same results.

Yep, I know. Rydstrom did TPM and AOTC and unfortunately, left Skywalker Sound to go work at Pixar in 2003/2004. I was hoping that SS would sweeten the mix so that it's now on par with Episodes 1 and 2, since they were doing remixes across the board, but they pretty much left it "as is".

99% of the time bd playback "issues" have nothing to do with a "bad" disc.
It's just problematic interactions between the particular player, the disc, the receiver and the display.
happens all the time with various blu-ray releases.
many times there is just no rhyme or reason to it.
and a lot of the time it's related to java.
