This sums up my thoughts nicely.

AOTC is a good movie (the final 40 minutes are excellent), and I think ROTS is a better movie than ROTJ.

TPM is my least-favorite Star Wars movie by a pretty fair margin. I still like parts of it, but the whole feel of it is too Disney-esque to feel like Star Wars, mostly because Jar Jar and young Anakin are a bit too over-the-top.

I also disagree that TPM lacks a protagonist - I think the heroes are clearly defined. But I think TPM lacks an antagonist that makes us feel like the heroes are in serious danger, and this doesn't happen until Darth Maul kills Qui-Gon. The good guys just seem invincible for the entire movie, and more importantly we never get to see any Naboo citizens suffering from the droid army occupation of their planet - it would've gone a long way to see a few ordinary people getting rounded up or shot by the battle droids while our heroes were trapped on Tatooine, helpless to stop them... Instead the whole movie just feels like the bad guys are vacationing on Naboo instead of doing anything truly dispicable.

I pre-ordered this and received it on release day. I've been watching it slowly and have enjoyed the PQ and AQ. I grew up watching Star Wars and so I've been looking forward to this release for a very long time. So far, the only thing that has dissappointed me with all of the changes is the change to Obi-Wan's scream that frightens away the Sand People in ANH. It just didn't have the same impact that the old one did. I'm currently in the middle of ESB, so there may still be some more things that I don't like.

Many people in here seem to be arguing about what makes a good movie. The only thing that should make a good movie is the answer to the question, were you entertained by it? Sure you can further break that down by levels of entertainment (thus a grading system), but in the end it's all about the entertainment factor which is all about opinion. For me, I'm easily entertained and can easily get into a movie without worrying about why or how certain things happen, I just accept that in their universe that's how things happen.

In the perfect world, that's how thing would or should be. Some people have a hard time accepting that others like or don't like a movie they like or dont like

When talking about Hollywood studios, Disney really doesn't fall into that category. Disney has always operate in its own little world. The major Hollywood studios did indeed not have the notion at the time to preserve original prints. The emulsion was NOT the problem for deteriorating original prints, it was actually the handling of them (I've worked 5 years in photo development, so please, don't argue with me about how to preserve film). The emulsion and the stock itself, even at that time, would not have deteriorated so badly so quickly. It was the fact that if you take film stock, any film stock, run it through machines over and over and over as well as expose it to light (which is what you're doing when you are striking copies from the original), it deteriorates. That along with improper storage (have you been to any archival vaults? by and large, regardless of the size of the corporation, where they keep files for archival purposes are FAR from optimum climate for storage, this includes record warehouses where they are SUPPOSED to have climate controlled environments as that is what you are paying them for to store your records).

As for if the studios wanted to go out of business they would have, guess what? They actually did. The Godfather was kind of their last hoorah before selling the studios not as a studio but just the asset (mainly the real estate). You have realize that Paramount Pictures, by far the largest Hollywood studio if not THE Hollywood studio at the time was close to selling itself, the whole kit and kaboodle, for roughly $600,000. Robert Evans basically convinced Paramount to give making films one last go and he hit on a gold mine with The Godfather. Let's just say that The Godfather pretty much single handedly saved Hollywood. Go read The Kid Stays in the Picture, great book, it's all laid out in the open for you there in regards to the dire straits condition Hollywood was in for that period.

Ironically, this information really isn't hard to find. All you have to do is google it, read some books on cinema, go through some director interviews, etc. Also, most true film buffs and historians would be able to give you basically the same information. It's been a huge topic of discussion in regards to how film preservation should really be a big focus for the studios but the studios aren't doing their part to preserve these precious original prints. It's all out there in the open. George Lucas is in the same boat with Star Wars, fans for some reason are under the impression that Lucas was a fortune teller and knew the extent of the success of Star Wars and the advent of HD media formats and thus would have taken especially good care of the original prints. The truth is, they didn't and by the time they went back to the original prints, they were in pretty bad shape. So when Lucas says that it's going to be very costly to do a true restoration as the fans would like, it's quite and ordeal and at the end of the day, it's actually cheaper to do what he did with the Blu Ray set and what he's doing with the 3D updates. At this point Lucas is more of a businessman than a creative genius and he's going to do what makes more financial sense.

So many words, so many of them wrong.

Kodak stock used in the 1970s was far more unstable than others. It was so poor they phased it out by 1983. Storage wasn't the issue for that stock, the stock was. IF you REALLY worked in film development you would have known that.

You want to believe Robert Evans and the Godfather saved Hollywood? Go right ahead, but your source for that is his own self aggrandizing auto-biography and actual facts do not back that up. Was Hollywood in a rough patch? Sure. Was Paramount, yep. Did one film and one producer keep Hollywood from going out of business in 1972? I think Bonnie and Clyde, MASH and a few other blockbuster hits from that period might incline people to think otherwise.

And what studio 'actually did' go out of business in the 1970s? What studio(s) started the 1970s and didn't finish them? And where is this list of disappearing films you keep avoiding?
