Ever read Tolkien's "Leaf by Niggle"? That's Lucas, and Star Wars is his leaf. He'll only stop working on it when he dies.

The only true SW fans are those who went to the first afternoon showing on the first day in 1977 and stayed to see the second showing without paying
I remember there were maybe less than 10 people in the audience. The star destroyer shot blew me away.

It's a lot astounding, in that article on the Library of Congress, that GL has allegedly destroyed the neg for a motion picture that revived the art and industry of special effects and won 6 Oscars out of a nominated 11. Do you think maybe he was cheesed because he didn't win for best director or best screenplay

For those waiting for the public domain status of the UOT it could be a long wait, the life of the artist/creator plus 70 years isn't it? I'd be dead before then. And I wonder if that applies to LF corporation If you keeping reinventing and re-copyrighting each new version every several years does it ever go into pd since each version is a new work?

Found some of the spoofs amusing on bonus disc 3 but not enough to watch it again. Saving the commentaries for the next time I go through them. Didn't notice the garbage mattes but it's been so long since I watched them I felt more caught up in the movies than in watching for glitches.

What does the illustration on the bonus disc 3 page reference - Clone Wars or the droid cartoons?

If it's the bug type thing coming over the hill at our favourite droids I think it's from Droids. I've tried to find it in one of the episodes on YouTube but have been unsuccessful.

My two favourite screams in movies Superman in Superman: The Movie and Kirk in Wrath of Khan. Episode III's 'No' didn't make the list. I also think by adding the RotJ 'No' it jars with David Prowse's performance nearly everyline of dialogue Vadre speaks has body movement to go with it.

And if Lucas wanted to match the trilogies he should have remade the original trilogy as the prequels with different characters, then he could really go on about symmetry, althopugh that might have been a bit on the nose....

But everyone would stop talking about Star Wars and this thread would only be fifty pages long.

No. It would still be 10 million pages long with people bitching because they saw DNR for a hundredth of one second in their favorite scene.

They claim it was spoon-feeding because they think Lucas is merely trying to have Vader vocally express his displeasure. But that is NOT the point. The real reason why Lucas has Vader yelling NOOOOO! in RotJ is that he was trying to strengthen the parallels between Anakin's downfall and Vader's redemption:
  • RotS: Palpatine is writhing in pain from lightning as Mace Windu tries to kill him.
  • RotJ: Luke is writhing in pain from lightning as the Emperor tries to kill him.
  • RotS: Anakin's emotions are conflicted, and he turns to the dark side.
  • RotJ: Vader's emotions are conflicted, and he turns back to the good side.
  • RotS: Anakin yells NOOOOO! as he attacks Mace Windu to save Palpatine.
  • RotJ: Vader yells NOOOOO! as he attacks the Emperor to save Luke.
  • RotS: Mace Windu is thrown out the window, into a seemingly bottomless pit.
  • RotJ: The Emperor is thrown down a shaft, into a seemingly bottomless pit.
  • RotS: Anakin's downfall is complete.
  • RotJ: Vader's redemption is complete.
Adding the NOOOOO! is not considered "spoon feeding" because most people clearly missed the parallels. A lot of Blu-ray reviewers even thought that the new NOOOO! in RotJ was referencing the cringe-worthy NOOOO! Vader yells when he was told of Padme's death at the end of RotS. Few people seem to have caught on to the Mace Windu parallel, which is CLEARLY what Lucas was trying to reference.

People can agree with Lucas's reasoning, or they can disagree. But to say it was "spoon-feeding" when the idea went completely over the heads of most people.... that makes no sense. If anything, the parallels were too complicated for some people to recognize.
Wouldn't it make more sense, if Lucas is actually making both scenes parallel, to write the newest one to fit the one that already exists?
And also interesting, if you compare the two scenes, it's pretty obvious that the one in Return of the Jedi is much superior in acting, writing, conveying emotion... So if Lucas did ghost-direct Jedi, then he clearly lost his touch between the two trilogies. Otherwise, Richard Marquand's part in the movie is bigger than most acknowledge these days.

You forgot the all important sound glitch at 51 minutes 33 second that evil Lucas left in there because he wanted to get back at them all

Look in practically every movie thread. There's usually plenty of people going "Did they fix the part in the movie at 43:07 where that green speck flashes across the screen for a second? It's always annoyed me so much. I don't know if I can buy the movie if this hasn't been addressed".

The Star Wars thread would be filled with this kind of crap. No matter what editions were released.

Nobody has to look that hard - we have things like this to make us .

Love the 5-minute photoshop of taking a piece of the rock on the right and putting it in front of R2. Brilliant. Adds to the poetry of the saga. Anyone who doesn't understand the parallelism isn't a true SW fan.

Star Wars belongs in the past and to one generation.

CAMP B: We consider Star Wars (the entire saga) as a retelling of the heroes journey which draws its outer shell from myth and culture and its core from the development of the human soul and has a message and a significance beyond mere entertainment. Therefore we welcome change that adds to the cohesion of the episodes and strenghthens the impact of the saga. Star Wars is timeless and belongs to all generations even those to come.
By your logic, "Gone With The Wind" and "The Wizard of Oz" belonged only to one generation, long dead by now. GWTW should, no, MUST be revitalized by making nonsensical prequels with CG-based Confederate soldiers and a comic-relief bugler named Toby Brinks. As for Oz, it really needs to be visually updated with the Wicked Witch of the West exploding with a Praxis ring instead of melting, followed by a P-Funk song-and-dance number from CG flying monkeys. While we're at it, we don't really know how the Wicked Witch of the East felt when Dorothy's house fell on her, she should scream "NOOOOOOOOOOOOO" when it lands on her...

And why, pray tell, are only the "Special Editions" of the OT the only versions you deem "worthy" of showing generations yet to come? You would be denying future viewers the chance to see the films as historical artifacts of how the Star Wars Trilogy (none of this "Saga" BS, by the way) changed movie making and revolutionized cutting-edge special effects between 1977-1983 (of which all 3 films were awarded Oscars for "Best Visual Effects", BTW) without ridiculous CG additions and mind-numbing revisionism.

Thumbs up

Interesting news: My gf just revealed to me that she prefers the Pt, as she feels that they have a better story, which is more structured and epic, whereas the OT feels more like adventure movies.

MANY people prefer the PT, because they are awesome!

I swear that I had NO influence on her decision at all.

Of course, some of you won't believe it, but whatever.

I love the whole Saga, but ROTJ is truly depressing in many ways.

Why didn't you say so before? All this time we've been arguing in the thread about which trilogy is better, but now the issue is settled.

PT >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> OT

People remember Vader's NOOOOOOOOOO!!! because not only was it so damn corny, but it was near the end of the film and people usually remember the last 10 minutes more than the most of the movie.

It's depressing because after ANH/TESB's producer Gary Kurtz left Lucasfilm, George turned half of ROTJ into a long-form commercial for Ewoks (note that two Ewok live-action TV-movies were released soon after, and don't forget the "Ewoks" and "Droids" cartoon series) and merchandising became king. While it had many good parts (basically the Sand Skiff sequence and anything located on the Death Star II including the space battle) ROTJ marked the beginning of the end of Star Wars as we knew and loved it. And that's even before the damned "Special Editions" did even more damage...

ESB - ROTJ and Episode I - Episode III involve the same individual. You can take that to the bank.

George Lucas pre-1981 and the George Lucas of the SEs/Prequels are only the same person in the legal sense, much like Darth Vader (before his redemption) was technically Anakin Skywalker. However, I seriously doubt that Lucas will ever turn from the path of the Dark Side...

You think George Lucas said one day that he was going to make prequels? Did it seem planned and organized to you? Interesting.
