Actually, we were talking about ROTS - Digital film transferred to digital medium, of course. The fellow I disagreed with said it looked "filmic", which to me can't be possible because ROTS was not shot on "film", but shot digitally.

Man, I need to get my eyes checked. I thought I was seeing a 'J' instead of an 'S'. I stand corrected.

Default I am a STAR WARS VIRGIN, but I am about to finish the prequel...

I bought the PREQUEL trilogy on Blu-ray. But before I see the ORIGINAL trilogy, which should I purchase, the blu-ray "enhanced" edition or the theatrical editions on DVD? I hear too much negativity towards the re-release version, it is frustrating for me to choose.

If you're a casual Star Wars fan, you probably wouldn't care too much. I showed the re-releases to some of my family who aren't really into Star Wars, and they couldn't even tell the difference.

I don't want to say this, but just get the Blu-rays. Since you've never seen the movies, the changes will probably not bother you, and the theatrical DVDs have gone way up in price ever since they were recalled.

Do the "changes" affect the storytelling? In other words, does the movie suffer enough to loose its magic? I've wanting to see these for a VERY LONG TIME now, I just want to enjoy it and appreciate them as did the original theatrical lovers.

You're basically opening up a whole can of worms by asking. You have to know that you're going to get a lot of people who will answer yes, and a bunch who are going to say no.

If you haven't seen the original trilogy then you are not going to notice a single "change" and therefore the storytelling won't change for you since you will have no basis for comparison.

I don't know why anyone would buy the DVD vs. The Blu-ray. The sound track alone makes it worth it

+1. I've seen the originals hundreds of times, and the changes do bother me to the point where I won't watch the Blus because of the changes, but really, if you're new to Star Wars, the changes will be nearly seamless.

DEFINITE YES.

Even the 2004 DVDs would suffice.

If the story was tampered with, who cares about the audio and picture quality...?

Wellllllllllllllllllllllllllll............

Star Wars
This is the toughest call. You shouldn't be at all bothered or distracted by the cosmetic changes because you have no baseline to which to compare them. The more substantive changes are more of a mixed bag. I would think even a new viewer could be impacted by a couple of those changes for overall I'd have to say the impact wouldn't be worth stepping down from the BD release to watch the theatrical release DVDs (which were somewhat crippled in their own ways).

Empire
Easiest call. The majority of the changes are cosmetic and shouldn't be at all distracting or bothersome to a new viewer. Similarly, the relatively few substantive changes are also pretty subtle and would likely go unnoticed by anybody who hasn't seen the theatrical release (and by many who did see the theatrical releases, to be honest)

Jedi
Eh, in the middle, I guess. The substantive changes to this one have generated a lot of the controversy over the years since they were introduced but I'm not sure a new viewer would be able to tell what they were let alone think something was wrong.

Bottom Line: Theatrical cuts on BD would be the best way to go but we don't have those so in the immortal words of Crosby, Stills and Nash just love the one you're with.

Definitely the BD "enhanced" versions!

Close to no one who hasn't seen the OT 100000 times, would notice a difference, and the story is the same.

The changes are for the better, and make them (the OT) flow better with the OT.

If you want the OOT versions, you would have to go back to some of the first VHS release, and have fun missing out on excellent PQ and AQ quality, tons of extras, etc. for sth. that isn't even worth batting an eyelash over.

Go BD! It's by far the best choice. Actually, there is nothing left to say.

I didn't see any digital noise on my copy and it certainly looked like a digital movie to me, but that being said, I don't sit as close to the screen as I used to.
It looks very natural. Digital noise is a part of DV, in the same way grain is a part of film.

I thought ROTS looked extremely natural.
I guess it's a personal preference.

Natural does not mean filmic. Film doesn't really look natural. I will say that I think ROTS looks better than many of the other digitally shot films I've seen as far as the "natural" vibrancy of the colours and everything else.

Digital noise is undesirable in DV - it shouldn't be present, as far as I'm aware of. You're the first person I've heard say otherwise.

I found no excessive video noise in ROTS, even when watching for it!

You probably enjoy the movie, as such you are not in need of reasons for hating it

Of course, no one would notice Hayden Christensen as Anakin, Vader yelling nooooo, Obi Wans horrible Krayt Dragon call and outdated CGI from 97. LOL Are you really thinking people are that stupid? I agree when it comes to things like Greedo shooting first, or others minors things, which no one from "casual" viewers would notice. But what about things I mentioned? Yes, I checked that and people DID notice it.

Even though I support SE, sometimes I just can not understand people like you, who pretend that changes to the films are minor, are for the better etc. The problem with them is that they are not done properly. At one point, we almost have visuals from the prequels, at another we are stuck with 77, 80 and 83 effects. Also being ignorant, spreading propaganda that OOT is VHS quality - it cleary shows that you know nothing about filmmaking, you have no idea about 35mm film, scanning technology, camera negative and so on.

I won't even bother to talk with such "experts" about technology. It's like talking with people who say, that there is no difference between BD and DVD.

The changes only affect the storytelling if you have seen them before 1997. Since you are going in blind, you should be fine.
