Exactly. It's one thing to recognize and appreciate innovation but thinking we wouldn't have telephones today if it weren't for Alexander Graham Bell is just plain silly.

There's no doubt Star Wars had a big impact but it was far more evolutionary than revolutionary. People tend to forget that CE3K came out later that same year. Even at the time Star Wars wasn't the only game in town.

Yes, compared to I and II, the audio is much worse on III. I would almost go so far as to say it's the weakest of all six movies. I wouldn't necessarily say that it's bad, it's just not up to par with the others, especially I and II which have some of the best audio in my whole collection. RotS just doesn't have much deep bass, and the surrounds are not very engulfing or directional.

Well, since this was released on Sept.16th, I would assume the complaining about the audio on RotS would probably start roughly around here.

It seams like it took forever for Star Wars to finally get out on Blu ray and the sad thing is, I haven't even watched all of the movies yet. I have spent a lot of time on the special features and I know a lot of stuff is missing but it feels like this set is overwhelming to me there is just to much stuff to go through. Once school is out I plan on having a big time marathon and finally sit down and watch each movie one after the other.

Hey frogmort:

Maybe it's because you do not have your sub-woofer...

[Show spoiler]turned all the way up to 11.

Well I think it is safe to assume most people play Star Wars quite loud :P. But ROTS is indeed a bit underwhelming in terms of audio (though the scene where Grievous escapes via the windows is pretty awesome ). LFE is pretty low, but I found the detail and directionality (cue missiles scene ) in the mix quite good. But still it doesn't match against the audio bliss TPM and AOTC delivered.

The DVD was the same though, it's almost like they forgot to ass the LFE channel. The Star Destroyers in the beginning explode and you expect Anakin and Obi-Wan to fly through these immense bass explosions and nothing happens.

I found the LFE channel to be very lacking in ROTS too and I think its the lack of 'oomph' from the bass that makes the film sound a LOT quieter in comparison to the other films in the saga. Maybe it was a mastering issue? I honestly cannot recall my theater experience but I am beginning to think the film was always lacking in bass since its theatrical release.

On a side not (sorta off topic), I watched TPM two nights ago, and then saw Hugo last night. What a difference a director can make in getting a performance out of a child. Unreal. The jobs done by Butterfield and Moretz made the performances of Lloyd and Portman in TPM look like two kids in a middle school play. If you haven't seen Hugo...GO. It is amazing.

It's always had a flatter sound. There are a few moments, mainly explosions and the like, where it has nice LFE but it definitely doesn't have as solid a sound. Mainly the issue lies in the approach to the lightsabers. Everything else, music for instance, sounds reasonably similar in the mix (though the music does sound a little more dialled back in the mix) but the lightsabers lack any real low end which is painfully obvious when comparing the Obi-Wan/Qui Gonn/Maul fight set to Duel of the Fates in TPM and Anakin/Obi Wan set to Anakin vs. Obi-Wan in ROTS. The lightsabers give the subs far more of a workout in TPM and they support the directionality of the lightsaber swings with large shifts in the LFE content whereas in ROTS there's little going on at all.

That's funny-- "middle school play" is the exact words I've always used to describe the writing and acting in the first two prequels, particularly between Lloyd/Hayden and Natalie Portman. Don't need the context of Hugo to realize that

As an aside, did anyone notice how much better the scene is in Episode II where Anakin has a nightmare about his mother? The added dialogue by the actress who played Shmi Skywalker actually turned that little moment into a dramatically effective scene. Previously, that part used to get unintentional laughs.

Thanks for noticing, I have since changed my avatar again, and by the way, I have both of my subs set to around 12!

I also noticed what you guys are saying. When I had the DVDs, RotS was definitely a weaker overall mix compared to TPM and AotC. I used to have a crappy little Samsung HTiB, and when I watched the RotS DVD through that, I could turn the sub, the surrounds, and the overall volume all the way up, and it still wouldn't distort. If I tried that on TPM or AotC, it would have destroyed it. I also agree that one of the biggest differences is the lightsaber sound. It's pretty pathetic on RotS. I have heard several people mention that it is because Gary Rydstrom didn't do the sound on that one, but did do TPM and AotC. Holy crap! Look at some of the movies he did the sound on!

So...
7 years my big pa-tootie...
There is NO! way this set took 7 years to put together.
PQ on TPM and ANH is not that good. (haven't watched TESB or RotJ yet.
Audio on RotS is lacking.

ANH - Picture is definitely better than all previous releases.
BUT... (not talking about grain here) the "crushed blacks" are still very much there. No visible pockets showing on Han's vest when in the Falcon.
Also, the SFX for ANH are also severely lacking. Green/light Blue/White LightSaber aboard the Falcon. Matte Lines around ships...

Finally got around to renting & watching the OT... haven't seen these films in quite a few years. SW is good in a nostalgic way. ESB is still excellent. ROTJ is okay, but Lucas's infantile sensibilities creep in, and now it probably suffers the worst from the SE edits... ANH has some bad ones but they don't feel quite as detrimental to the overall film.
Jedi Rocks is worse than AIDS
Visuals are inconsistent, both between and within the films. Detail is quite satisfactory, but there's some nasty DNR in places and the colors are generally pretty ugly. Then there's that part in ROTJ where it looks like a DVD. Unfortunately, this set feels like a stopgap.

im thinking its not that bad for 1970's - 1980's movie PQ wise and transfer in HD. well if you compare for the recent blockbuster films this year which has a definite transfer of a blu-ray, well its a different story.

Default why is the US Saga box so expensive?

i wanted to make a new thread about this but i cant find the "new thread"...silly i know...
as a european i been buying movies from the US for a long time and it seems the cost of movies seems to swing more and more in favor of Amazon.co.uk,i just made the math and the same saga box is on sale there for UK 48 wich is about US 74.....that's a hell of a lot difference (US 99 on Amazon US) for the same video & audio quality, and that price is inclusif taxes and shipping!
it is also regionfree, and the packaging is better then the US release as each disc is housed in a blue plastic casing compared to the US "sliding in carton "one,no small scratches with that one!
i wanted to buy Star trek-original series on blu aswell, turns out ..again cheaper and lots!
annyone knows what is happening with this price swing as i never encountered this actually since i started buying way back from the US...laserdiscs...it was always cheaper due to the bigger market i guess but not annymore..

Got this for a gift. A great gift it is.

I did wish it had 7.1 and a THX Optimizer. This is Star Wars and the audio should be the best it possibly could be. After all, it was ROTJ that started the whole THX thang.

Interesting that the THX trailer is a true "trailer" being at the end of the movie. It looks and sounds wicked!
