I misspoke. What I meant to say (and clearly didn't need to based on your quote above) was that "You must be new to Star Wars" because of this:

Because Lucas doesn't care about "nostalgia". The current iteration of Star Wars is the only one that has ever existed, in his mind.

Didn't mean anything negative by it.

Not much longer. It was out of the two theaters in my town after Thursday. Went to see it a second time this weekend, had to go to the next town over.

I loved Phantom Menace's picture quality. I'm happy with what I got, I'm done complaining about slight imperfections.

Slight? The DNR in The Phantom Menace is not slight. When it's there it's as bad as some scenes from The Big Lebowski, Patton, or The Longest Day. Thankfully it's limited to several scenes that make up about 1/4 of the film.

Oh. No problem dude. I have nothing against a lot of the alterations as I do like the prequels and think that they fit in better as a complete saga. I love Star Wars, but am not what you would call a purist. Most of the changes are not a big deal for me at all. I know that might raise the ire of some on here, but in the end, it is just a movie. Or a movie series as it were. I just love those trailers for the nostalgic value and the chills they still provide. I know Georgie pie would rather everyone forget that there was ever an original version of his beloved baby, but sadly that will never happen until all of those generations die off. It's no problem.

I had an odd moment of clarity yesterday. ROTS clicked for me yesterday in a way it never has. I watched this movie opening day, and have watched it many times since then, and never could get past the fact that Anikan's turn seems so random and quick and down right foolish. Well, it finally hit me. I was watching Mace fight Sidious, and I couldn't help but think that had Anikan not done what he did the whole thing could have went different. How easily all of it was avoidable. Without being entirely aware of it, I was beginning to feel an investment in the story like never before. Immediately when Anikan cut off Mace's hand I yelled out "You damn fool!"

Lol, I've never done that before. For the first time, I actually felt something about his decision. After I did that, I enjoyed the movie more than I ever have. It's like everything fell into place for me. Anikan was a fool, and it led to a lot of senseless death and destruction. Here for years I've been struggling with this movie, and fussing over how Anikan's decision made no sense, but it does. I couldn't understand how anyone would make the choice he did, but they would if they were in his boots. He was so manipulated, and so desperate to believe anything to save his wife that he made a decision that any normal person knows was wrong but he just couldn't risk it. He was so afraid that he might regret not saving Sidious that he had to. In his mind, once Mace was dead there was no where for him to go. He was with Sidious till the end. In that moment he had to bet on the Jedi or Sith and he chose the wrong horse. He picked the devil, because he was promising answers quicker. We the viewer want him to not make that mistake, but all we can do is watch as he knocks down a dominoe that will spiral the galaxy into darkness and war. Its ****ing sad. Especially when you consider his wife died from stress and greef anyways.

Acting is still bad at times, and the movie could use some polishing, but Anikan's betrayal and turn made sense to me more than it ever has.

It was nice being able to emotionally invest in the movie for once. I get invested in the OT quite easily, but always struggle with the PT. There was just a lot of stuff getting in the way of that. ROTS has always been my third favorite of the saga, but now it may move up some. It's got problems and flaws, but the story itself resonates deep. I mean how many movies have an ending that depressing. Thousands killed, a republic destroyed, heroes in exile, main character turns bad and causes wife's death, etc. It's a tragedy on a huge scale. If the movie had been polished up a bit I have no doubt it could have been a classic.

I've always been a big advocate of preserving the "I am your Father" moment by watching the OT first, but I'd love to see someones reaction to ROTS not knowing what is coming next. I imagine its a big blow, and has to be depressing.

Anyways, I just wanted to share that moment I had.

I watched ROTJ for the first time (on blu) the other day and noticed another change that I haven't read (or more likely probably missed) on here:

When the droids are taken away in jabba's palace a door opens and there is an upside-down droid that gets his feet branded with a red hot iron stamp. In the other versions I have the droid screams. In the blu there is no scream. WTF?

Otherwise PQ was pleasing but really only fair when I compare it to other transfers of lesser films of a similar age, with only a few outstanding shots. AQ was very nice.

And the No-Noooooo was totally unnecessary of course, but it really didn't anger me like I thought it would. The musical number in Jabbas palace still annoys me far more.

And the blinking ewoks? I actually think that change was for the better

That is so cool that you figured it out. I also look at the seeds that were planted in Episodes 1 & 2 that pointed to his eventual downfall. That whole segment
[Show spoiler]with the Jedi being ruthlessly slaughtered is so sad.
What you say is true. Yoda told him earlier that he was afraid of losing those close to him and that was a path to the dark side. That's why Jedi are normally not allowed to have relationships like that because the attachment would interfere with what they are supposed to be. I thought that of all the prequels ROTS had the best acting. Attack of the Clones is still my personal favorite for various reasons and Phantom Menace has once again worked its way into my heart. None of the films are perfect, but all are good still, with good stories well told at the center. Anakin's downfall is a true tragedy, but once again, seeds are planted for his eventual redemption. Now I can fully appreciate what is going through Vader's mind in ROTJ when he
[Show spoiler]throws the Emperor down. He is thinking "I lost my wife to this crap, but I am not going to lose my kid."
That's the amazing thing that I as an adult, unlike when I was a child, I can look at the whole Saga and see how finely woven the tapestry is, even with the little flaws along the way. Those flaws however, are barely noticeable if they are even noticeable at all when the whole big picture is viewed in full. In the end the prequels earn their right to exist as they finally complete the tapestry that was begun in 1977 and ended in 2005. The whole piece works.

Cook makes an important re: the manipulation of Anakin. In the film, it seems like everyone's on his case, with Palpatine asking him to watch out for the Jedi, the Jedi asking him to keep an eye on Palpatine, and even Padme asks him to speak to Palps about ending the war. The guy is pulled from pillar to post, so much so that the only person he can rely on is himself, which adds to his sense of selfishness and isolation and pushes him further towards the dark side.

"Palps" lol - That genuinely made me laugh. Just what a Jedi from South London* would call him

" Oi Palps, you're bang out of order! "

*for my American cousins, think Jason Statham in his broadest English accent

(Or Geoff ^^ lol)

Some good points here and I agree for the most part. The biggest problem with the prequels are the fact that many of the key relationships in the series are not developed at all. The biggest one is how Anakin and Obi Wan are suppopsed to be such good friends. Did you get that from these films? I sure didnt. We had to be TOLD about it. No screen time was devoted to really building that relationship. They couldnt stand each other from the get go. Other than wrestling with some Gundarks(which we are also TOLD about).... we get no development. We werent SHOWN anything. This was poorly handled, IMO. Its one of the key relationships in the whole series and it was botched. Thats what made their fight at the end of ROTS so devoid of real emotion. It didnt seem like brother against brother - it was more like "thank god we can actually fight now becasue Ive been wanting to kick your focking ass for a long time!" And, it went on for about 15 minutes too long

Otherwise, I did "feel" something when he really turned and Order 66 was being executed. Great stuff. The scene where Anakin is just looking out of the window in tears, thinking of Padme and she is also shown looking out in tears is great stuff. Probably the best shot in the whole prequels. This is where restraint and silence is golden.

The last issue is how he seems to just accept that Padme has died and other than the famous "Noooooo..." he just lets it go. I was expecting a lot more out of that scene. The whole point of ruining the galaxy and killing jedi was to save Padme and this didnt happen. His behavior was much to "matter of fact". Its like the family goldfish died or something!

Still, ROTS is the best of the three and one of my favs, flaws aside.
