That would make it my oldest SW memorabilia, as I got that way back in 1977, and NEVER threw it out with the rest of my SW items.

I guess that just shows how fantastic that artwork was.

RIP Ralph McQuarrie.

R.I.P Mr. McQuarrie. He's one of the few people involved with the first trilogy, without whom the end result would have been completely different, and of course far weaker. Those pieces of artwork, no matter how early in the process, give us almost exactly the finished movie, in some instances. Whether McQuarrie knew what Lucas wanted, or Lucas got so inspired by McQuarrie's art is something that doesn't even need to be discussed.

Sad to hear that Ralph McQuarrie passed away. A fantastic artist and a true visionary. He will be missed.

That George took credit for? Well, he deserves all the credit for being the original creator of the saga!! As do, of course, Ralph and everybody else who helped bring that vision to reality.

Incidentally, there's a nice story about McQuarrie in today's Los Angeles Times:

Well, that's a matter of perspective, isn't it? If I say I'm going to create my own personal hovercar and go out and hire a bunch of conceptual artists and 50 aeronautical engineers to build it for me, did I still CREATE the hovercar? Just because I put my "Fabuloso" stamp on their designs, doesn't make it MY creation. My IDEA, sure. How many times have you heard GL credit the "hired help" -- the Phil Tippetts, Dennis Murens and countless others -- who "made" the galaxy for George? Other than John Williams, of course. That's all I'm saying.

Good article on McQuarrie, BTW. Thanks.

Lucas credits McQuarrie alot. Not just Williams, cause even he knows that without McQuarrie Star Wars wouldn't have gotten a green light.

Yeah, a number of documentaries mention that George needed those pictures to get Star Wars made, he says this himself at least in Empire of Dreams.

Topher Graces' Fan-Edit!

Topher Grace Edited The ‘Star Wars’ Prequels Into One 85-Minute Movie and We Saw It!

Sounds like a lot more fun than doing a Hand Solo....

I am going to assume that almost nothing from 'The Phantom Menace' made it into that cut.

I don't think you're gonna see a $50 dollar price point for the complete saga anytime soon. Maybe next fall for a Black Friday or Christmas deal or something.

There's a huge difference between creating ONE vehicle and coming up with an entire universe full of different worlds, species, spaceships, assorted weapons, etc. etc. etc. and getting a little bit of help because you're already the creator, the main writer, and you're also going to direct. All of filmmaking is a highly collaborative endeavor - even though in many cases a film does, like Star Wars, reflect primarily the creative process set in motion by a single person.

And, yes, I think GL has often been very generous in crediting the cast & crew, many of them went on to have enormously successful careers thanks in large part to him!

You know what I just realized, George Lucas did only direct the first movie, here I thought he directed the entire trilogy.

Childhood mind forever blown.

Thanks! I can just keep waiting, also waiting for a low price on Lord of the Rings.

From what I've read, George Lucas was controlling Richard Marquand much like how Frank Oz operated Yoda...

Sorry I posted this yesterday, the top link which is private is to the /Film videoblog (it's in the 2nd link as well) of the screening, which (the screening was for a selective audience) won't be made available to the public. /Film (the 2nd link) have a good run-down on what was in the 85 minute cut though, but we'll have to rely on our imaginations.

Once again I apologize for any confusion I may have caused with my link titles.

I will pick that cut of the prequels up if it ever shows it's head, even as a bootleg.

Y'know what, Topher Grace's edit does sound kinda bad-ass, not only because of the stuff that was cut but also what was added; the stuff with Padme's family on Naboo in Ep II should never have been taken out of the film.
