I'm sure everyone can take note that this is PeterTHX's way of avoiding having to further explain his rediculous assertions.

Sorry to interrupt... but, does anyone think it's strange that we haven't heard anything about The Phantom Menace 3D on Blu-ray? I would have thought by now something, at least a release date, would have been announced.

It's going to be an exclusive with (i think, Panasonic) kind of like Avatar was, that's all I know.

It's OK ~ I think I have seen it all when it comes to this thread.

It is what it is & I am happy with it ~ Can't change it so why complain about it

This is what I see when I watch them on my PJ I Really don't let it bother me as far as what has been changed !

No, it's a way of avoiding repetitious and pointless arguments.

Too late to avoid the personal attacks from you though.

Don't be such a delicate flower, geez. Ok so what exactly is the fact that makes it so verboten to compare the fresh effort put into RAIDERS (or JAWS or E.T. or TAXI DRIVER or BLADE RUNNER etc.) compared to STAR WARS. Because they worked on it 8 or 9 years ago and that's good enough for you?

Good idea.

Watching The Bourne Ultimatum. Green green green. Combined with the endless shaky-cam and A.D.D, editing you have a combo ripe for nausea. Bleccch. Any Star Wars BD looks a million times better.

I think the whole idea was to make the OT a bit more uniform with the prequels. Wasn't Episodes II and III shot in 1080p resolution? I haven't seen the Blu-Rays of the OT, but I remember my 2004 DVD set definitely looking a bit "glossier." I can see how Lucas would be fine releasing those same 2K scans of the movies when presenting all 6 movies as one complete saga, especially if he would have to go back and redo all the digital effects to create a new 4K scan.

Now, ideally, if he were to decide to restore and release the UOT, ideally they would be remastered from the original negative (re pieced together or whatever is going on with it) the same way Jaws and Raiders were done, and really look like restored films from the seventies and early eighties.

The difference is: TBU is the same movie that I saw in theaters. It looks the same. It sounds the same.

Star Wars, unfortunately, is not. It doesn't look the same. It doesn't sound the same.

Because I don't think SW on BD looks bad. I see details I've missed in the hundreds of viewings over the past 35 years. It's just not fair to compare differently shot and mastered films. For one thing the films you list weren't in the same state of fading and disrepair SW was in when it was restored in 1996. Raiders is a relatively simple transfer from elements in much better condition from a film with a larger budget and relatively few opticals. Same with Jaws. A bit dirt & scratch removal, frame repair here and there, some color and light balance tweaking and there you go. I realize it's a gross oversimplification of the process but it's not in the same ballpark as what they did when prepping the SEs.

Am I correct in understanding GL shot 2 of the 3 prequels in 1080p? Meaning there is no more resolution available even if we wanted it?

You are correct. There were no 4k digital cameras at that time.

He's just a genius, ain't he?

The ONLY upside is that, perhaps, he'll be upset at the lack of quality and he'll decide to re-shoot them entirely.

Is it fair to wonder why we're talking about differently mastered films?

Is it fair to wonder why Close Encounters and 2001 and Blade Runner all warranted new state-of-the-art scans but Star Wars somehow didn't?

Don't get me wrong. 'Ehhhhh, the old scans were fine' is a perfectly legitimate answer.

But you can't blame people for thinking 'fine' is a relatively low bar for something like Star Wars and it's only natural that would come to mind whenever a major catalog title doesn't recycle an old master.

This is the most irritating of all straw men, namely the implication that it would be impossible to faithfully recreate the original trilogy for blu-ray. Believe me: it's possible.

In the past, when I've suggested that the "tiny changes" you mention don't tend to be straws of the "camel's back breaking" variety, it's been suggested that I'm a hypocrite because I'm okay with some changes but not all.

If it must be either black or white, then yes, I would take an unvarnished, unrestored (but authentic) blu-ray transfer of the original films over what we ended up getting.

I know some people would like this thread to go to sleep, or at least take a mild sedative, but it bears repeating: Not releasing the so-called "classic trilogy" on blu-ray is the biggest blunder of George Lucas's career, a straw that's so huge, so ludicrously heavy, that all of the camels in Lawrence of Arabia, if they worked together, wouldn't stand a chance.
