Here's another vote for bringing Peter Mayhew back to be the voice of Chewbacca.

Don't get your hopes up, I don't think the original cast will be back, especially if it's not set long after ROTJ.

Maybe Han Solo won't even be in them, or only peripherally.

I have the programme from the first release day of Star Wars back in 77, and in that Lucas outlines his story treatment for the full nine episodes as he then saw them. Admittedly this was before he even thought of Leia as Luke's sister, or of the rise and fall of Anikin being the supposed core of the story, but in his outline he saw the third trilogy as being about the next generation's restoration of the Force to the galaxy. As he saw it then, it would be by the children of Luke and Leia's marriage, so obviously some details will have changed, but I wouldn't be surprised if that's still the esssence of the story treatment he mentioned having passed on to Kathleen Kennedy.

Overall, I see this news as a death knell for the Star Wars stories, which had long since taken to their sickbed in any case. Their only real hope, I reckon, was if someone fiercely individualistic and with a strong storytelling bent were to take the reins of LucasFilm. Disney's not it. Disney's focus these days is more on being a "trusted", unchallenging supermarket brand.

It could still be about Luke and Leia's children. It would be really disturbing especially for a Disney film but it could be done.

They could keep that. I'm sure John Williams can compose for the banjo.

I can see their future announcement:

"Star Wars, original versions, Platinum Edition, available for limited time only, then we're sending them to the vault, so hurry up!"

Harrison Ford couldn't wait to wash his hands from Star Wars a long time ago. No way he would ever be back.

As much as I tend to despise the whole mess of Hollywood reboots going on, this is one series that could really benefit from such a treatment. Update it, shoot it in order, and for heaven sake, keep George away from it...

I can just see this contract between Disney and Lucasfilm...

432. Disney and it's entities will never release the Original Trilogy in any new format.
433. Disney and it's entities will make Jar Jar an integral part of any new movies.
434. Disney and it's entities will require the yelling of "NOOOOOOOOOOO" in any new release to show emotion.
435. Disney and it's entities will never let Han Solo be a scoundrel again.

In all seriousness, this is probably the best thing that could have happened to the Star Wars franchise. Wow, it if could have only happened about 15 years ago.....

That's a shame. It's not like there's a chance of being held back or typecast.

Another actor would probably do better anyway. If VII takes place right after VI, Harrison would be too old for the part.

Han & Leia's son will save the galaxy from Luke & Camie's son who's turn to the dark side.

I'm gonna say Steven Spielberg could possibly direct. Lucas asked him for Episode 6, then again for Episode I.

The new Star Wars films will have digitally generated versions of our favorites. They will probably have Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, and Carrie Fisher running around with motion capture suits, but the final effect will be digitally created.

Agree. The original should never be re-made. I wouldnt mind a 7-9 would be very interesting. All though everyone is pretty much set on hating George, im glad that he is still chairman and will have some input.

A new Director/Screenwriter can only be a good thing, in my eyes. I felt that AOTC was rock bottom for Star Wars, with ROTS finding a way out but not quite making it. As long as there is a coherent story with likable characters with no green screen obsessions then I can't see how it would make anything worse.

I'm definitely not for a reboot of the OT. I'm sure it could be better than the Special Editions, but Star Wars is special in its original form. There is no way you can modify, or recreate, that magic.

4-6 restored to their original glory.

7-9 under new management.

1-3 in the trash can.

I'm sure there's a clause in the deal to protect all the existing creative properties. I don't think that there would be any difference creatively, except for a Disney logo when Fox distributing contracts expires.
