The Jaguar example isnt a good anaolgy. There werent any design mistakes with the original Jag E Type. Sure, it was a quirky English car as they all are(I own a Lotus Turbo Esprit so I know ) but there werent any straight out errors. The UOT is plagued with some dodginess that can take you out of the moment. Im a huge SW fan but I accept that the original effects are dicey sometimes. The fixes are welcomed, IMO.

Also, the Battle of Yavin of 100x better in the SE versions. Better dogfights, more action, cleaner effects, everything. Making effects look better isnt harmign the original films intent. Having Han shoot second IS a change of intent and character. Thats where I got a problem.

Personally, Id like to see all of the old sci-fi classics get some effects updates, provided they were done right. It would only emhance the films.

No. They own distribution rights to both as well as any other variants on the film. You can't get out of a contract by making an edit or adding some special effects.

The only way Disney gets this back is if they buy the distribution rights back from Fox.

Disney can produce an "original" version of Star Wars or even a new edit of Star Wars, but under the current contract terms, Fox still gets to distribute it.

but the rights have not always belonged to dsiney...so your point is pointless.

also if you have owned the soundtracks, track 1 is the 20th century fox opening fanfare.

I disagree. While I didn't care all that much that Lucas created the SEs and that he made other so-called fixes, films are products of their times, including the special effects, and they should remain that way, no matter how bad they look. Before the likes of ILM and other sophisticated special effects companies came along, most special effects did look really terrible. Even as a ten year old, I'd look at a film and think "these effects are lame".

And even effects that did look good to us at the time look lousy now because the technology keeps evolving. Terminator II was on cable last night and the shot of the T1000 getting his head blasted and then the metal reforming back together, which was considered such a ground-breaking effect when the film was released, didn't look like much to me today. Having said that, I still don't think they should revise it.

Especially in SciFi films, the sets, props and costumes are almost never right. Virtually all the communications devices in older SciFi films look ridiculous today - we've actually exceeded their design and capabilities in reality at a much earlier point in time than those films take place. And most uniforms look like a Halloween party as a 1980s disco. And I always laugh when haircuts represent the year the film was made instead of a guess about how people might wear their hair in the timeframe the film takes place. But I still wouldn't go back and change them any more than I'd go back and use CGI on the 1933 King Kong.

Fixing an optical because of generation loss is one thing - I accept that. But everything else should be left alone, IMO. I "accept" the SEs on the Star Wars OT because they were made very close to the film's original release and most were intended for the original film, but not implemented due to budgetary and schedule reasons. But I don't think any other changes, aside from fixing opticals, should have been made after that point - not even the benign ones like creating better looking skies.

This has actually been a problem for a long time as film libraries have been sold and re-sold from company to company. IMO, the original logo should always remain on the film and the new company can put their logo before it, but in the world of corporate branding and big egos, that's never going to happen. And it's really confusing since, for example, Ted Turner bought and sold MGM three times (but still wound up with most of the library).

The Fox and Lucasfilm logos will remain on the existing films, since Fox has distribution rights in perpetuity on some films and until 2020 on others (unless Disney buys the rights back), but there will most definitely not be a Fox logo on any new films made. But what you might see under future releases under the Lucasfilm logo is "a Disney company" just as it now says "a Comcast company" under the Universal logo.

People actually cheered whenever I went to the theatres and heard the Fox intro which carries its theme into the Lucasfilm one. So while it's not exactly part of the movie itself (a debatable point I guess), it still holds a nostalgic feeling to many people. It's really too bad that Fox wasn't even given a chance to acquire the movies, but I guess I can see why Lucas went with Disney.

The connection with Fox was so strong that I actually used to associate the Fox theme with just Star Wars at one point when I was a kid, even if it showed up with other movies

I agree that some of the OT changes were good and some were pointless. As far as the Jabba scene in A New Hope, I don't see why they didn't just have Jabba curl his tail around his body when he stopped walking, like a cat does. Then Han could have easily walked around him without their having to create that awkward step.

It will be weird to not hear the Fox fanfare at the beginning of Episode 7, but I understand that they own Star Wars now. I think original logos should appear on older films though. For some of their animated classics, Disney has replaced their original logo with the newer one of the castle, which is really jarring for films made 50 years ago. If they want the new logo in, they should put it before the original. I think they could possibly do that with episodes 1-6, just put Disney, then Fox.

It was weird when I watched The Clone Wars for the first time. I wonder how WB are affected by this deal as I'm sure they now have rights to characters that are distinctive to the series as well as the ones Disney now own.

As for a new BD release I'd like a fully restored version of the original trilogy (I don't mind if it has a few fixes like Luke mentioning Biggs if the Biggs footage isn't included (unless they include an extended original cut) with all it's deficiencies and a new Final Cut with completely new special effects. I'd love a Blade Runner style separate release for each film and some kind of early cut.

IMO, there is nothing ILM could have done to make that scene work when they went with a giant slug as Jabba. It should have remained on the cutting room floor.

I didn't mine the "clean up" changes that much...like fixing the smudge under Luke's speeder or the cloud city additions. It's the tweaking of the characters/creatures in the films that bothered me the most.

A new "Star Wars" movie without the famous "20th Century Fox" logo at the beginning is going to be pretty odd.

I agree 100% The Fox intro music was (and is) just as much a part of the SW soundtrack as the John Williams opening theme to me.

Actually a very easy way to fix that is a quick edit cut to Chewie listening to their conversation then back again to Solo after he has moved around him.

Simple.

The problem with that fix is that it is half-assed like some of the others also.

When I first watched the SE in the theater and that scene came up, I immediately thought that something was VERY wrong there.

Then after watching it again on the VHS tape later on I realized that not only had they removed the smudge from the landspeeder, they also removed part of the bottom of it too!

Way to go guys.

That is literally half-assed, as Luke and Ben now need to get replacements for themselves.

Same here.

I actually liked the digital Tron castle Disney used for Tron Legacy. I could see them doing a similar custom job for their SW movies.

Still doesn't replace the fanfare though.
