I don't think Lucas goes out of his way to say "Hm. What can I do to piss off fans today." I just think he does what he likes. He changes his mind now and again but he's just a different kind of person than say Steven Spielberg who now shuns his 2002 edition of E.T. releasing only the original on blu-ray. Spielberg has a much better understanding of what fans want and more importantly why they want it the way they grew up with as he said in this interview recently:

Quote:
Quint: I can’t wait, man. I love that the last DVD release actually had the original mono soundtrack on it as well. I wasn’t a fan of the remixed 5.1 sound… the splashing sounded canned and the gunshots were changed…

Steven Spielberg: Oh, I know. I totally understand that. (In the future) there’s going to be no more digital enhancements or digital additions to anything based on any film I direct. I’m not going to do any corrections digitally to even wires that show.

If 1941 comes on Blu-Ray I’m not going to go back and take the wires out because the Blu-Ray will bring the wires out, that are guiding the airplanes down Hollywood Blvd. At this point right now I think letting movies exist in the era, with all the flaws and with all of the flourishes, is a wonderful way to mark time and mark history.

Quint: I’m in total agreement with you. I wish you could talk George (Lucas) into doing the same thing!

Steven Spielberg: Well, I can’t!

Quint: (laughs) Yeah, I don’t think anybody can!

Steven Spielberg: George goes his own way and I respect him for it, but my new philosophy about this is to let sleeping dogs lie.

Quint: That’s great news for film geeks. Anybody who appreciates film, that's like music to their ears.

Steven Spielberg: When people ask me which E.T. they should look at, I always tell them to look at the original 1982 E.T. If you notice, when we did put out E.T. we put out two E.T.s. We put out the digitally enhanced version with the additional scenes and for no extra money, in the same package, we put out the original ‘82 version. I always tell people to go back to the ’82 version.]

Quint: Having the option is the big deal for me. Using the Star Wars example, I don’t think there’d be an outcry if we could watch a nice transfer of the original versions. We’d be like, “George can do what he wants and I’ll watch it… but you know maybe the fans would like the option of watching the movie they fell in love with, too.”

Steven Spielberg: Yeah. And I think the other good thing is that they understand when they see a movie and they suddenly see something that could have been done much better today and could have been corrected in the DVD/Blu-Ray transfer, they really appreciate seeing the strings attached.

If somebody put out George Pal’s War of the Worlds and took the strings off the machines I’d be very upset. When that machine crashes in downtown Hollywood, and you see the strings going from taut to slack, that’s the thing that allows me to both understand this movie is scaring the hell out of me and at the same time this movie is a creation of the human race.

That little taut-to-slack moment of those wires on that wingtip makes the original George Pal War of the Worlds work for me. It embraces my fears and it also alleviates them in the same breath.

2337 pages of the same butthurt.

This thread is the same exact arguments rehashed over & over, by largely the same people making the same complaints over & over.

Nothing has changed.

"From taut to slack". That one little phrase perfectly encapsulates why movies should be left alone. If you can see the joins it's simply a reminder that these stories were made by human hands, i.e. they didn't appear out of the ether, and any visible artefacts are a reassuring reminder of that fact.

It's funny though because A LOT of people on this forum were mad when E.T. was released on Blu and the 2002 version was not included as that is what they first watched and remembered as a kid.

So if Han was a cold blooded killer by shooting Greedo (who was pointing a gun at him) first then does that make Indiana Jones a cold blooded killer for shooting the dude with the swords in Raiders Of The Lost Ark?

Its implied that, if given the opportunity, he'd go back and screw up that scene in Raiders, too.

Now you see, i hate the SW:SE's because so much was changed, but i have no problems with cleaning up SFX like removing wires, cleaning up matt lines or garbage matts (which still was a problem in the end of Empire on the Tie Fighters on the 2004 DVD's and wasn't fixed until the Blu-rays) or pining down wobbling elements (Stay puff at the end of Ghostbusters when he's crushing the church)

That's fine in my book, but Star Wars was different in that he was changing fundamental storylines and characters. subtle changes in the first Indiana Jones film were fine in my book and looked better but when the blu-ray came out the used the older crappier SFX.

So i do support updates but when it's well done and seamless

The best example is Star Trek: The motion Picture DC, look how well that was received. All the changes where great and tastefully done

Yeah, but the other guy had no gun. Unless he throws the sword first?

E.T. is a different case, though. There are two different versions of it. Star Wars has upwards of 4 or 5 at this point, and that's just the visual changes.

I'd WANT the Special Edition version on blu-ray as well, if only the OT were released. However, there'd be much less of a stink if that were the case. The original version of any film is the most important to preserve.

Two versions vs five doesn't matter though to what I am saying.

It seems to me many people first and foremost want the version of a particular movie they first saw - whether original version or not. I've seen this with other movies in threads other than Star Wars and E.T.

To preserve and to present to people.
That goes for many films that don't have their theatrical cuts released in Bluray, but only their extended/director's cuts..

I had a Raiders of the Lost Art coloring book when I was a kid, and I distinctly remember that instead of Indy shooting the Cairo Swordsman, our hero disarms him with his whip either by removing the sword from his hand with it or by tangling up his feet and tripping him. I think it was the later. One of those two ways were probably how the scene was intended to be filmed as the story goes the Indy shoots the Cairo Swordsman scene was ad-libbed as the result of a long day's filming.

God bless the Internet, here is the page:

I wouldn't have put it past Lucas to CG the sword into a gun or something. But why he'd be twirling it instead of firing it, I don't know.

You can see on-set footage of the actual fight in one of the documentaries, they certainly tried to shoot it as intended. The rest is history.
