Or maybe people were too busy enjoying the films to notice and/or care about such things? Imagine the screenshot wars that would've resulted from all of those various VHS and laserdisc releases.

Are there any good special features on the 4-6 blu-ray trilogy set?

Did they care over the featurettes from the fourth disc on the dvd set?

...or is it just commentary tracks?

Commentary tracks only for the two trilogy sets which I found to be less than great. Lucas couldn't even be bothered will explaining why there needed to be magic rocks in front of R2D2 or why James Earl Jones wasn't able to yell "No, NOOOOOOOOOOOOO" in 1983.

At least he acknowledges they're not the original versions (he mentions the added cartoons in Jabba's Palace, for instance). Have you heard the THX 1138 commentary? All the time he tries to pretend this is what he shot in 1971, as if nobody would recognize the blatant CGI. It's ridiculous.

I love it! They must not have had the technology for him to yell no back then lol.

How can there be great featurette on the dvd version, but not the freaking blu-ray set?

Is this a classic case of extortion?

The VHSs had stuff the LaserDisks didn't.
The LaserDisks had stuff the DVDs didn't.
The DVDs have stuff that the Blu-Rays don't.
The Sets have stuff that the Individuals don't.

It is too much to ask for all previous extras to be compiled together for a definitive release. Mostly because some of those extras contradict what the creator said the week before they were created.

Wait...I don't think the VHS had stuff the laserdiscs didn't. That might be the only thing wrong with this statement

An argument can be made that the VHS "Letterbox Collector's Edition" from 1992 came with "From Star Wars to Jedi: The Making of a Saga", which never did make the jump to LD in the US. It did however make it to the Japanese LD "Collector's Set" (the equivalent of the American THX "Faces" release) in 1995.

Of course one could also get "From Star Wars to Jedi" as a stand-alone VHS tape in the US (or stand-alone LD in Japan), so that does muddy the waters a bit.

How does that excuse a $45 blu-ray set from having Jack Shiite in terms of featurettes?

I've said it before, but every time I look at my copy of the Alien Anthology my heart aches for the Star Wars set that could have been.

Well who's to say we won't get a truly awesome Star Wars set at some point? Disney could surprise us!

I still think they'll give us the Unaltered OT at some point. Ideally leading up to the release of Ep VII next year.

I have no doubt that was part of the plan to sell Lucasfilm.

Obviously, at the time of the Blu-ray release, George was already getting ready to sell the company, it wasn't a quick/rash decision on his part.

This set beefed up their home video coffers, and proved yet again the viability of the series (like it needed proving, LOL). At the same time, there were tons and tons of things left off (even completely shocking exclusions like Empire of Dreams) preserving the value of future home video releases by ensuring there was tons more of unreleased content for them to mine for any future box sets.

It was a very smart move, and the lack of extras on the original release made perfect sense once the sale of Lucasfilm was announced.

It's been 3 years since this set has been released and the price still remains the same every time I check the page. It just discourages me from buying it.

I agree.

I also fully expect to see IMAX releases of the originals prior to the set - much in the same way Raiders of the Lost Ark was done in 2012.

Being it Disney and that George Lucas has (I think) nothing to do with the saga anymore, maybe if Disney can release the Original Trilogy like it was, maybe we get a bunch load of special features..
