By my reckoning, Lucas only had the "right" to forever change Star Wars. Just how involved was Irvin Kershner in the Empire redux? And Marquand was dead when Lucas decided to muck with Jedi. Does the creative vision of these two directors matter anymore?

Hmmm you won't like the Blu-ray then. They will probably be so clear that you will probably see David Prowse pimples through his Darth vader helmet

^ No, I probably won't. The 1997 versions were at least tolerable. The 2004 DVDs are just totally unacceptable. I don't see myself buying the BDs.

There are still many great shots in ANH, but especially some of the Death Star fight scenes with the model kits should be replaced with more realistic looking vistas of the Death Star's surface. ROTJ is better, but the shot where a huge Star Destroyer flies vertically into something monumentally huge, probably supposed to be the surface of the Death Star, really needs to be replaced by something that actually looks decent at least. That, to me, has always been the worst shot in all of the SW movies.

I don't think the Arena battle in AOTC is bad at all. The compositing could be improved a bit, but that's it.

I agree, that the explosions of Alderaan and the Death Star in ANH are laughable.

The Deat Star explosion in ROTJ OK though.

I say replace msot of the puppets that are seen more then 2 sceonds with CG creatures, most necessary for Lando's co-pilot in ROTJ. That's one awful mask!

There are still many cool looking shots in the OT, so no need to replace them all.
Maybe they don't need to change all of them, but it would be nice to have a little more uniformity with the effects throughout. I totally agree with you about the puppets as well... And please.. Lose the musical number at Jabbas palace... Yikes

It's a homage to Broadway and the Ziegfried Follies

Being in the audience doesn't make you a collaborator. You're a viewer.
You're right, it's his movie. But that doesn't only refer to the SEs, but to the original movies as well. It was such a battle to create those three movies, that I think it's sad that Lucas thinks they're not the 'good' versions any more.
I never said that the audience has a right to own the original. Yes, the 'creator' of the entire thing can do whatever he wants with it, but does that mean he has to? Just because he has the technology now to do what he 'envisioned' then (something I don't believe, couldn't he just say he changed his mind about them), does that mean he has to? So what if a couple of shots might not hold up today?

Wait, I just realised that this is old news.
Let's hope that Lucas is done adding stuff that was not in the original. But, you never know!!

1 gripe i have w/the OT is the added characters and musical # in jabba's palace in return of the jedi.

that is one part that does make me cringe every time. it just doesn't fit w/ANY of the rest of the saga.

other than that, i can tolerate the special editions.

I thought the touch-up of the movies was very well made. They weren't changed in nearly the same way as apocalypse now redux.THAT was a travesty. If you are going to rant,do it to apocalypse now redux. Not star wars.

Wonder how much the box set will go for,and if there is an option to buy the first trilogy-that is the last trilogy,no wait. This is confusing. The first made

Lucas becomes the studio giant who went in and changed another director's work.
Interesting you mention the director that was "glad they finally had a working snow monster" when he was interviewed about the SE release.

Kersh may have had directed it but he answered directly to Lucas on everything: script, production design, storyboards, etc. Lucas also directed some second unit and filled in when Kersh was busy with other setups.

That Kersh was sent to the premiere is no surprise. Lucas has always been low key and generous with spreading credit. He insisted the late Leigh Brackett be credited with the screenplay with ESB even though pretty much nothing of her work remains in the final product.

Marquand may be dead but it was also Lucas' show, down to every laser bolt fired. It's been industry knowledge that Lucas basically ghost directed it the same way Poltergeist is really Spielberg's show (there are shots of both George and Steven on the Sail Barge set in Yuma BTW).

I ate, slept and breathed the OT when they came out, seeing them several times in the theater, devouring every making of and interview with the cast and crew. GL was always unhappy about some of the shots and always had the mind to change them when he could. Why people are surprised or puzzled by this really don't know the story behind the scenes of these films.

This thread is on fire. I still don't understand the outrage of the couple of scenes Lucas altered. I've watched these movies 100's of times and it didn't
really change the feeling for me.

Whatever, buy them or don't buy them. But I guarantee alot of people whinning and moaning will be picking them up day 1. How can you not want
to own Empire Strikes Back on Blu Ray. Seriously I want to hear Vader in uncompressed audio period. I don't give a **** what anyone else says.

I feel the same way, but I'll tell you this...... if they are initially released ONLY as a box of all six films..... I'll pay up to $250 for that set on release day...... It'll likely be around $100 or so (I know people are saying much higher, but I'm saying release day sale price of around $100-$110...... look at $55 sets of LOTR, and tell me I'm still crazy.......)

I'll take my Crow medium-rare if I'm wrong....

Francis Ford Coppola made the original version available, except for the aspect ratio issue at the behalf of Vittorio Storaro.

I haven't seen anyone mention this, but is anyone else aware that Lucas owns ILM? The company that created the visual effects in Star Trek 2009? I'm not calling Star Trek the greatest movie of all time, but I would argue that Star Trek had one of the best looking space and land sequences of all time. Everything in that movie look perfect. I would support a Star Wars BD that updated the now outdated visual effects with the effects used in the recent Star Trek movie. I see no reason why it couldn't be done. Except it would probably cost a lot, but they are essentially billing themselves. They should get a discount on their own work.

Most people on here would know that.

I want all 6, I really like 3, 2 is bleh an 1 has Darth Maul.

I hope they touch up the CGI in the prequels and added portions of the OT (i'd be surprised if they don't, they updated the CGI for the OT DVD's ), I want Han to shoot first, light saber effects updated to match the prequels, and Natalie Portman completely replaced by another actress (lol jk ).

I would also like them to each contain ultimate and theatrical cuts of the films, so that everyone is happy.
