It's a strange ribbing error that occurs for like a frame or so during the Death Star run.

Indeed. With that and the music/special effect fix to the opening of the Assault... it's already way better than the DVD release.

What some people don't understand is that Lucasarts and Fox employees likely have to sign non-disclosure agreements to prevent them from leaking info about the set before release date...

people demand screenshots and/or sources, but do they understand that if the person providing the info were to post a Lucasarts email, data sheet, printout, etc. they would be putting their job on the line.

Beast,

It is.

As a matter of fact, I was thinking of not only getting the Saga Boxset, but getting the individual trilogy sets as well and just housing the special features discs in those cases from the DVDs.

I was thinking about keeping the DVDs as a back up but, after reading these initial findings, I might not want to go back to the DVDs again (the film discs)...if these fixes and alterations have taken place.

I just hope his upcoming report confirms the CGI Yoda replacement for the crappy and creepy TPM puppet.

Has Lucasarts ever sent out review copies a month before release date?

Most studios send out review copies get sent out around 2 weeks before street date, but I'm not sure if Lucasarts sends out full review copies of the discs at all. Maybe a sample of the packaging and a snippet of clips from each movie.

So as expected the clip shown at Comic-Con was not from the blu-ray at all. I think most of the clips we've seen so far were not from the blu-ray as well (except the crossed-lightsaber-in-front-emperor shot and select few others maybe).

It seems that they intentionally keep thing under wraps. I have a good feeling that we're in for a big surprise on Sept 16th!

Under wraps, like the plot of Indy IV? Just kidding. Can't wait either.

If true, this proves the footage used at Comic Con was the 2004 transfer, not the new one.

The blu-ray also uses the 2004 transfer, only with a lot of fixes and new audio. Just that the Comic-Con & other clips we've been seeing are not from the blu-ray.

I have some initial answers and will be putting together a full report which will take a few days after I finish digesting some of what I saw and heard. Please note that I won't be providing any additional info until I have a chance to write everythign up. In the meantime here is some info for you to digest:

They used the digital files from the 2004 release as a starting point for the Blu-ray release. They then made a lot of tweaks and fixes:

Light sabers? Check.
"Humdinger Glitch"? Check
Color timing? Check
Other effect cleanup? Check

The audio for all the films was tweaked. It was readily apparent that it was a labor of love for Matthew Wood who worked with Ben Burtt. Episode 4 got the most attention since originally it was a mono mix with no separation. He went back to the original masters to make the new mix.
George Lucas and Ben Burtt were heavily involved in the entire process including balancing the score against the effects. There are a few places where Matthew found some snippets of background dialog that was never used on the masters and he put them in. I'll have additional details as part of our expanded coverage.

I had the opportunity to view some deleted scenes and WOW there is some good stuff there, some great deleted scenes and alternate takes. They have not been "restored" and quality varies clip by clip.

The packaging is very nice. The complete series set is a book with thick cardboard pages and great art (I have pics of each page that I will post with my complete write up. If you opt for either of the three film sets its a standard three disc Blu-ray case in a cardboard sleeve.

As to the original cuts? The company line is this is what George Lucas's vision for the films is. While its up to everyone to vote with their wallet, In my opinion if you boycott this release because of that you are going to be missing a otherwise fantastic release.

From Jumpman's post:
the blu-ray uses a new 2011 master, the basis of which was the 2004 transfer.

as soon as any changes are made, it's a different transfer.

the comic-con footage was simply the 1080p master that the 2004 DVDs were authored from. the blu-ray comes from a new and improved master.

Saying "it's the 2004 transfer but with some changes" makes no sense... "some changes" = new transfer

So I've had this pre-ordered on amazon since January or so, but I'm thinking I might actually pre-order this in a store like Best Buy... I mean this is Star Wars we're talking about, possibly my favorite thing in the world so I'm gonna wanna go and buy this as soon as possible. Hopefully they'll do a midnight release!

I stand corrected. I thought a "transfer" means from the negatives to digital files, and when they prepare them (fixes, color timing, etc) for the new medium (blu-ray) they're then called "masters".

EDIT:

Wait, in bold is exactly what I meant. Now which is correct then, a new transfer or a new master?

Thanks.
