Star Wars makes money just packaging and releasing them. If it was all about money there would be another trilogy on the way. For all you guys talking sh*t about the last trilogy I'm sure all of you went to the theatre to see them. And most of you probably bought the dvd's to.

George Lucas is a filmmaker, and filmmakers like making films.

I think it's really shabby how people fault him for being successful, or for making re-releases of a product that is in high-demand
.
I'll proably get a lot of hate for this, but I have to agree. It's the studio that distributes the movies that like the money coming in.

I think you can tell that in a lot of interviews with GL that he really does like making new material for Star Wars because you get to explore new enviroments, species, etc.

I'm not saying GL is a truthful and honest person all the time, but I think he does get too much criticism.

He wouldn' be in the movie industry if he didn't care about his work, because you can tell that he does put effort into his products, even if you don't like them. And one of the greatest traits of his is staying independant, and disliking Hollywood.

The Ultimate Boxset, but only for 3 possible reasons:

1. I am sick and tired of getting one version of all the films, thinking it is the complete saga, when it turns out that a different version of each film exists, with different bonus features. I just want it all in one set, and never having to worry about it again.

2. If the US release is region free

or

3. If we get the Ultimate Boxset eventually released in the UK (with nothing missing from the content of the Ultimate Edition)

It's never going to happen though. Lucas will continue to milk the older movies with so called "upgrades" until the day he dies, and even then, he has probably left instructions in his will for his family to keep "updating" after his death.

Lucas, we all love Star Wars, but for the love of God, stop milking the prequel movies to death!

He ultimately ended up becoming one of the bean-counters he used to despise so much. His art stopped being art and became nothing but business. The entire prequel trilogy was built around merchandising rather than storytelling. As Yogurt might say, "where the real money from the movie is made."

Well said, that fact he takes 3 years to release a movie shows the work he puts into it. And if it was all about the money he could just throw a movie on screen every 2-3 years from the books that are out and continue to dominate the box office.

People around here love to snivel about stuff cause they either think they could write a better story or he underacheived with the prequels.

He was a filmmaker. But when Star Wars became a cash cow, he ceased to be a filmmaker and became a businessman. It wasn't meant as an insult. I respect that he saw what people wanted and made more.

He made the prequels for his kids. They sell toys because people want them.

Of course it was meant as an insult. How can it not be an insult to say that a filmmaker has stopped being an artist and become simply a "businessman"? Shame on both of you, you are doing exactly as I said before, you are faulting him for being successful, and implying that it is incompatible with being an artist or having artistic motives.

I certainly didn't hate the last three, but I consider them inferior to the first three. I'm sure there are a lot of die hard fans out there with blinders on or rose colored glasses who will take issue, but honestly, Christian Haydenson is one of the worst actors in history and it was a complete and utter shame to cast him in the Vader role. Add to that the extreme overuse of CGI and the somewhat at times ridiculous saber fights. Also, you have Ewan Mcgregor, who although not a bad actor, was nowhere even close to the great Alec Guinness. To this day, I feel it was a stroke of pure luck Lucas got Guinness to play that role. Even Peter Cushing. Those two classic actors gave the first movie it's ground. I think what saved the later ones was the grounding presence of Christopher Lee, another great, classic actor as well as Ian McDiarmid. These young actors like Haydenson and Portman simply come off as wooden and stale. Heck even the somewhat corny performances of the younger actors in the first three movies are a hell of a lot better than the "robot-lifeless" acting of the younger actors in the last three. I still watch the last three of course, but they are painful to watch.

I'm sorry (not) but the last three episodes (I mean the first three episodes) in my mind simply do not exist! I did not buy them and I will not watch them. Star Wars, Empire and Jedi is the COMPLETE series. What came before and what happens after, I don't care. All three of these movies were EVENTS...the other three could have been straight-to-video!! Now I know some of you are mad, but of course, this is my opinion (and you know what they say about opinions!!!) It's just I am of the era when Star Wars first played at the movies (I was 21 years old) and these three movies could not be touched. The other movies . . too much CGI, too much politics, and too much BAD acting!! (And YES I did go see Epi. 1, 2 and 3 when they came out and I have not watched them since) Hey, have a nice weekend!!

Call me crazy but I kinda think these are going to be done "Blade Runner" style meaning we're going to be able to watch all the different incarnations of the movies. Maybe the "Close Encounters" DVD is a better example. I think it could be done on single discs if they kept all the non-commentary extras off the movie discs.

Imagine being able to select the original "Star Wars" with its original theatrical version, the '79 re-release that added the episode number and subtitle, the SE, the DVD and whatever changes may be added to the Blu-ray edition. Even the DVD format allowed this kind of thing but space was obviously an issue. I think this is why the whole concept of presenting alternate cuts on a single disc is so much more common on Blu-ray than it ever was on DVD.

I don't claim to have any insider info or anything, it's just a hunch. I just think LucasFilm is going to try to make this a definitive release. I don't think they've essentially announced this thing so far in advance without doing something big.

Even if they were going to further tweak the movies (and at the very least they have that CGI Yoda ready for Episode I) they would probably just throw them onto the discs and have them in stores within a few months. Restoring all the different incarnations of the movies in a way that would allow the common footage to be branched among the different cuts? THAT would easily explain the timeframe.

Ultimately I think LucasFilm is tired of people *****ing about the treatment of the theatrical editions and they finally understand that they'll make more money if they please more people and including all the different versions is the only way to do that. I said something similar recently on the "Godfather" thread when discussing the unfairly-maligned "Part III". They may be in the minority but right now there are people who love the '97 SE's so why not give THEM what they want when the format allows it?

I actually support probably 95% of the changes Lucas has made to the movies in the SE's and DVD editions but I can also be a purist when it comes to original theatrical editions and I think most people wouldn't care what Lucas did to these movies as long as they had "their" editions alongside his. I personally hate "Apocalypse Now Redux" much more than anything altered Lucas film and it doesn't bother me one bit that the new Blu-ray has it alongside the theatrical version. There are always going to be directors who want to mess with their movies but giving people a choice in what version they watch is a win/win and I honestly think Lucas has finally accepted that.

It could if they wanted it to. LFL and Lucas himself have said repeatedly they're not going to do them with the original cuts again. I don't think they care about the complaining and it's a "Lucas' vision" thing, etc.
