On a 50' screen, could the eye really see the difference between 2K and 4K, if you sit at a normal viewing distance?

Again, the average consumer isn't really going to go that much above a 50'. This is why I don't see the industry going beyond Blu Ray...and why I think it's going to be okay that the max resolution for the foreseeable future for these films is 1080p.

I not saying it's better than getting a 2K, 4K, 6k, or 8k scan of the Original Trilogy but would there even be a point when it comes to the future of home theatre viewing?

I don't know about you but I'm not going beyond Blu Ray. I don't think I have strength to do this all over again with a new format...for a little bit more resolution.

So 4k is actually almost 5 times the resolution of 2k.
But you are not going to see any noticable difference on an HDTV set or your standard home theater. And this is a home theater release...

But is it 5 times the details? Obviously not. And I don't think there would be any difference between watching the same material at 4K and downgraded to 1080p on, let's say, 50" TV screen.

Dammit. I might have to actually buy the Complete Saga just so i have the pod race scene. This looks pretty gorgeous.

It was also said in the report that Lucas has put additional stuff into the movies
Anyone know what we will possibly see?
Will Lucas further connect the two trilogies?

I agree. People are flipping sh!t because of the 2K transfers from '04 being used, I'm one of those who just doesn't think it's a huge deal.

Look at Taxi Driver, it received a 4K restoration, but you woulnd't be able to tell just by looking at the film. The are plenty of films that just received a 2K film scan that show more detail than Taxi Driver.

Of course, Taxi Driver is a huge step up from the DVD and it looks as good as it ever will. But you cant get more detail than what existed it the first place. The only think 4K will do to most films is make the film grain look sharper...

I watch blu-rays on a 140inch screen(preojector) at around 12-14 feet from it.. Will there be any difference if I switch to 4k?

It would depend on the screen size and viewing distance. I bet you could tell on my setup between 2k and 4k.

Is there an option to switch to 4K? Unless you buy one of those Red-Ray drives plus you'd need a new projector. I can't see anyone but professionals using 4K and 48fps in they're homes anytime soon.

I dont get the comments about 2k vs 4k because its not like anyone has bluray and/or video source that has that resolution.

4k and up is absolutely needed if one really wants to preserve as close to an exact facsimile of the film frame as possible. 2K results in quite visible pixels on theater sized screens.

Serious Questions:

1)How many of you have written down every single thing that was wrong with the 2004 versions??

2)How many of you will have your little checklist in hand when these come out??

From Part II of HTF:
Quote:
And of course, every time we watched the movies, George would find something that he wanted to change, so there were changes to the films visually as well as audio-wise, so there are some changes in the Blu-ray version that you guys will find!
He writes this as if that's a positive thing. We want the classic films preserved on Blu-ray.

When I first saw the Special Editions, I had mixed feelings. On the one hand, I liked the fixes (landspeeder smudge, junk mattes) and I liked the additional Wampa footage but adding digital creatures because you can to fill the screen doesn't interest me. What really bothers me is if Special Editions exist then by contrast the originals should exist for comparison. If the current Blu-ray sets are derived from the SE's, where are the originals? George gets away with this by not calling them SE's any more. He slowly transitioned the SE's into the current release thus deleting the originals forever.

Well, bluray is extremely close to 2K.

IMO, the reason I want 4K are twofold:

1) As a matter of priciple. A 4k scan should yield an archival quality file that will look more accurate to film on a large theatrical screen utilizing 4K projection.

2) As a practical matter. Even though the increased resolution of a 4K scan will not be visible via BD, a new 4K scan means a transfer from some truly amazing, state of the art datacine equipment. Zero gate-weave, no video noise from an older telecine. Just a rock solid representation of the film source at 1080p rez.

Quite a few of us have seen these hundreds and hundreds of times, so written down checklists are unnecessary.

I don't think I'll even remember by the time the discs start spinning. If we all aren't lost in the experience then we've let the little kid in all of us down. I'll leave some of the debating to the experts.
