'I have to say, I'm very encouraged by what I've seen so far with regard to these Blu-rays, and by the answers I've gotten to the questions I've asked about them. Like many of you, the last few DVD releases of these films have always left me... wanting. It just always felt like they were rushed somehow, and that all too many little important quality details just were overlooked. But this Blu-ray set feels very different. Finally, it appears that these films may have gotten the attention they deserve on home video at long last - especially the Original Trilogy. In fact, I think this may be the first time since that 1994 Definitive Edition laserdisc box set that the films have been so carefully handled, and that so many of the fan irritant A/V problems have been properly addressed. So can I say that this Blu-ray box set represents the "ultimate" release of the films on disc, or that these films will look absolutely perfect? No. But I think it's now possible for me to believe that Lucasfilm may - just may - have finally done these films fairly proud on disc. We'll see.'

So from all of this, one thing is clear, Bill Hunt just earned himself an entry in the UK rhyming slang dictionary for 'stupid.........'

And this is why you'll be happy because you have choice. You can choose to not buy this set because of what you've kept. It's really that simple.

Hell, I'm in the market for the '06 Limited Editions just so I can have the theatrical cuts. I don't need them in HD.

Once again, I compared him to a book burner. In this case, a book burner working under the directive of Augusto Pinochet, not Pinochet himself. Or a Nazi.

Yep. And, even then, I wouldn't watch the DVD's. The audio is compressed. I'd stick with my laserdiscs.

Speaking of which, it'd be interesting to see if the price of the laserdiscs go up on ebay.

Blu-Benny,

Not anymore. The prices for the '06 Limited Edition have been jacked up. Trust me, I've been searching since yesterday.

Nevermind. I was looking in the wrong place...

Once again, you are unhappy with the Blu-ray release that Lucas is offering, do not buy it! I am sorry I know I sounb like a broken record but it's the reality. When they release a Blu-ray I don't like, I don't buy it. I don't scream, I don't go on calling the director a dicator, I don't keep on posting over and over how I hate it, I just don't buy it!

I want to buy this blu-ray set...I really do...I've been looking forward to it for years :/ I'm up in arms about this.

Well, 1080p quality in A/V was my main reason to buy these movies again, which is what we definitely have. I just wish we got all the dodgy-looking SFX fixed, especially the sabers. Correct color timing would be nice too, but it doesn't bother me too much, especially since I didn't notice it most of the time. I just feel kinda cheated on by buying this set after they literally changed/added things, but didn't fix the things that mattered the most.

One thing though...does anyone know if the pink flashes are still there in the beginning of ANH when the rebels and stormtroopers are fighting? And are there still flashes in the Obi-Wan and Vader duel?

Because, I'm getting this set. But, I don't need everything to be in the best possible picture quality. I just need to be able to watch it.

The sound that Obi-Wan makes to scare off the Sand People is not something you would hear in a cartoon. Maybe something by R. Crumb, but not a Saturday morning 'toon.

It's more like the straw that broke the camel's back. It's not the only problem in the set (though it's perhaps the most annoying new one). There are still plenty of issues with the color timing, for example. Aside from maybe fixing the crushed blacks, the color timing is largely identical to the 2004 versions, whereas some people (myself included) expected it would match the 97 release much more closely. Plus, of course, lightsabers.

In some cases, you're correct. I haven't upgraded my entire DVD collection. I've upgraded the special cases...Star Wars being one of them. As far as new films are concerned, it just depends on how much I like the film. Some times I get the Blu Ray. Some times I'm good with the digital copy.

At the end of the day, as long as I can watch said film, I'm good. There are certain exceptions. Star Wars and the Godfather are the exceptions.

If we ever were to go beyond Blu Ray quality, those two series are the only ones I'd upgrade the Blu Ray for...

Just had the "opportunity" to watch these.

First, the good news, the sound is absolutely awesome and will give any home theatre a serious workout. The audio errors and mixed up channels from A New Hope seem to be corrected in this mix.

Now the bad news. Lightsaber colors remain unchanged and vary in color dramatically from scene to scene, just as they did in the DVD versions, however the intresting thing is they have obviously attempted some sort of correction as Darth Vader's sabre no longer passes through Lukes when they lock sabres in front of the Emperor as it did in the DVD version.

Also it appears yet another change has been made to the Solo/Greedo scene, a trim or edit of some kind, i will leave it to the more experienced to judge for sure, but there is definitely a slight change between this and the last DVD releases.

Other than that these seem to be a recycle of the last transfers we had...

Let the ranting begin......

Since it is known that 3D has a small fan base, anyone think they will wait to correct all the light sabers for the 3D/2D combo packs that we will eventually see to boost sales of those? Just a thought...

I don't get why the defenders think we are upset purely because of additions. Let me make it clear as possible:

Lucasfilm said they were going to fix the lightsabers in the OT. They didn't.

They didn't. The discs were available. Those who were invited jumped right to checking out the deleted scenes.
They didn't even bother watching more than a few minutes of select scenes from the movie. It was their choice.

Listen, there's no rule in the code of cinema fandom that states that Lucas or any other filmmaker for that matter, has to release their films on the various formats over the years.

This is why I don't get the comments about being "done" with Lucasfilm and Star Wars over these latest set of changes. If you have a VHS copy, the laserdisc, the '97 Special Edition Widescreen VHS, or the '06 Limited Edition version of these films, why not just watch those and rock on for the rest of your days?

They suited you for a while. Why can't they suite you for the rest of your life?

It's all really simple. This set doesn't suite you? Go watch whatever copy you have that does. Again, it's not like these things aren't out there to get.
I don't think it's unreasonable for fans of these movies to want them in their original unaltered editions in the best home video format available. Yes, legally it's Lucas' right to do whatever he pleases with these films, but it doesn't mean the fans have to like it.

And it doesn't help matters when you compare Lucas' stubbornness with other filmmakers who seem to have no problem offering the viewer a choice. Ridley Scott did it with Alien, Blade Runner, and Gladiator. Spielberg did it with E.T.(DVD) and Close Encounters. Cameron's done it with virtually every one of his films. Peter Jackson with LOTR, King Kong, and The Frighteners. And so on and so forth.

I just don't understand the obsession the guy has with not only the endless tinkering with the original Star Wars trilogy(seriously, this is like 5th version of A New Hope we're getting if you include the 1981 rerelease with the Episode IV title crawl addition), but with his effort to make the original theatrical releases into relics.
