The fan edits in question try to recreate the theatrical version as absolutely closely as possible, to make them nearly identical to the original theatrical presentation video-wise, that's the difference. They also fix the errors in the DVD bonues version that were inherent to the LD master.

Well, Spielberg did his thing, and Lucas is doing his. To be fair, if making movies is only about pleasing anyone that chooses to watch them, then many of the great artistic films we've enjoyed over the years would have been watered down mush. Although I personally prefer the original original-theatricals, I have to give Lucas a lot of respect for at least sticking true to his own vision and not listening to all of the fans that get in an uproar over everything. Just because Spielberg appeased fans with his film, doesn't mean Lucas has to. Would it be ideal? Absolutely... but Lucas and Spielberg sees things differently. Spielberg now wants to let sleeping dogs lie (his words), and Lucas wants people to enjoy HIS vision as HE wants it to be seen.

They're works of fiction. Get angry over real things that affect lives in the real world, not whether a fictional character says a single word in a film.

You want your theatrical cuts? They're there on disc two of that set. Period. End of discussion.

The damn DVDs don't spontaneously combust the moment a Blu Ray upgrade is available.

And as you say, the fan edits always make changes that they (the editor/creator of said fan edit) wants to see. So, how is this different from Mr. Lucas?
Settle down. Nobody said the '06 dvds combust. Read this thread - some people like certain changes while disliking others. Fan edits tailor versions of the movies to certain likings. As you said, Lucas can be considered as making his own "fan edits." Now there are multiple versions of these films, so adding more versions shouldn't make your blu-rays combust . SW is a highly diluted franchise.

The irony here is that apologists will tell the whiners/haters/complainers to accept the latest changes, but your post indicates you are quite angry about the idea of people enjoying versions of the films other than those of Lucas. If you have versions with changes you want to see, then it's possible other people have versions omitting those changes and keeping the films close to the UOT. It works both ways.

I'm not commenting on whether it's right/wrong to make fan edits and profit from them, but I'm explaining to you why people make these fan edits in the first place. We shouldn't be discussing this here because it seems like a touchy subject for the board, judging by some deleted posts and your own frustration.

Bottom line is that these movies have changed over the past 14 years and the changes Lucas has implemented don't fit with the originals, at least according to a sizable portion of the SW fanbase.

You think amazon is stoked right now? A barrage of complaints and 1 star reviews.

Why do they feel the need to do their own work to preserve it when they could just pop in the '06 Limited Editions?

It's not a law that says that these films HAVE to exist in the highest quality format of the era.

Oh, please. We all have things we love. We don't have to temper our passions just because shit is going on in the world. I love movies - I don't apologize for it.

Oh, I'm definitely not angry about it. What pisses me off is the constantly complaining about it when it's all in the hands of the consumer. We choose what to buy and what not to buy.

If this set is not for you, don't buy it and be on your merry way. Stop with the ridiculous "I'm done with Lucas and Star Wars" nonsense because this attitude about these changes isn't healthy. This whole attitude towards the franchise and the creator isn't healthy.

I mean, is sticking with the DVDs so hard to do with the advent of Blu Ray?

Me too.
Just because you've burried your childhood underneath layers of cynicism and the realities and stress of day to day life doesn't mean we have to. Star Wars was a big presence in my childhood and is dear to my heart. Its because of Star Wars I have a strong passion for film in general. So you can take your ego if you want to judge others.

Re: No.

They actually got the sound bite from The Maury Povich Show:

"Darth Vader, the DNA tests are in... You ARE the father of Luke Skywalker, the rebel pilot that destroyed the Death Star, the Empire's planet sized armed and operational battle station."

"No...NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!"

But, yeah, that three second alteration still belies the original impression of the scene and the change still stinks.

Of course it isn't the law, but who wouldn't want the UOT in the highest quality format available if the altered versions that ol' George is releasing on blu-ray are a freaking tragedy to some of us?

If Mr. Lucas won't preserve them, somebody's got to.

I am sorry to hear that Adywan, I actually remember one time me talking about your edit and you pm'd me and asked me not too. I ended up removing the post.

So I doubt Adywan did this and wish the a$$ bucket would man up......

Wow! There's been a lot of traffic in this forum in the past 18hrs haha. I was listening to a morning radio show today, and they mentioned how Star Wars fans are enraged about these changes. I skimmed through the last 40 pages of these thread, and someone mentioned that Lucasfilms has confirmed these changes?? Is there a link to that? >_< I'm still in denial about these changes

Funny thing about that. They changed it to taste more like Pepsi. And the new formulation had a lot of fans.

It's not like it was universally reviled. It's just that unhappy voices are always the loudest ones.
