I meant that the "UOT" versions were once upon a time the "latest and greatest" versions to own, and were advertised on TV, in magazines and everything... way back in the early 80's when the first VHS and LaserDiscs came out. With Lucas backing the entire campaign.

I am indifferent to the cosmetic changes. Blinking Ewoks... new Jabba door... whatever. Those are superficial, to say the least.

But I cannot believe anyone genuinely believes the addition of any spoken dialogue by Vader during his redemption scene is actually a change for the better. How the scene played out originally in 1983, 1997, and 2004 is one of the best scenes of all six films and a favorite of many fans. It's also a scene that the PT actually enhances rather than detracts from in terms of emotional impact. You didn't need Vader saying anything to understand his internal conflict and the pain he was feeling in seeing his son writhing in pain. Through the imagery, editing, sound effects, and music, you understood exactly what Vader was thinking right before he picked up the Emperor to rid the galaxy of his evil once and for all. That, my friends, is an example of good filmmaking. It was poetic. It was beautiful. It was a moment Lucas should have been really proud to have executed so well originally.

How so? He didn't direct ROTJ.

You are absolutely right though. Although I understand the fans and agree that Lucasfilm should release the original unaltered versions, all the changes he did never bothered me. Now this is a different matter altogether.

Why continue to argue against this statement that Lucas himself made. For the 16th Million and One time...

It doesn't make it any LESS hypocritical that it's about people other than the creators.

Ummmmm.... what of that post even referred to anything like that? You might want to re-read that.

It's not hypocritical at all. Unless you take what he's actually said out of context. You know, like you guys are doing.

WRONG.

He made that statement BEFORE he saw Jurassic Park.

Quote:
The words of George Lucas:

A copyright is held in trust by its owner until it ultimately reverts to public domain. American works of art belong to the American public; they are part of our cultural history.

People who alter or destroy works of art and our cultural heritage for profit or as an exercise of power are barbarians, and if the laws of the United States continue to condone this behavior, history will surely classify us as a barbaric society. The preservation of our cultural heritage may not seem to be as politically sensitive an issue as "when life begins" or "when it should be appropriately terminated," but it is important because it goes to the heart of what sets mankind apart. Creative expression is at the core of our humanness. Art is a distinctly human endeavor. We must have respect for it if we are to have any respect for the human race.

The public's interest is ultimately dominant over all other interests. And the proof of that is that even a copyright law only permits the creators and their estate a limited amount of time to enjoy the economic fruits of that work.

Attention should be paid to this question of our soul, and not simply to accounting procedures. Attention should be paid to the interest of those who are yet unborn, who should be able to see this generation as it saw itself, and the past generation as it saw itself.

I know he didn't literally direct the scene, but considering it his his story and the original execution of that scene beautifully captured the message he was trying to say, it is a moment he should have been proud of, whether or not he physically directed the scene. He was proud of it back in 1983, 1997, and 2004. What made him change his mind for 2011 is mind boggling.

as far as I know from interviews Rick McCallum is the guy who told lucas not to focus on outspace in the prequels. Outer space and spaceship battle are my favourite part of starwars. I think thats why i like the clonewars so much it includes the stuff left out of the prequels. Thanks rick

So you're just gong to ignore all the things he said that had nothing to do with who made the work being altered and everything to do with the importance of historical honesty and preservation? Did you actually read the complete speech?
